Towards a dynamic model for the Urban Heat Island of Madrid

Present research is framed within the project MODIFICA (MODelo predictivo - edIFIcios - Isla de Calor urbanA) aimed at developing a predictive model for dwelling energy performance under the urban heat island effect in order to implement it in the evaluation of real energy demand and consumption of dwellings as well as in the selection of energy retrofitting strategies. It is funded by Programa de I+D+i orientada a los retos de la sociedad 'Retos Investigación' 2013. Despite great advances on building energy performance have been achieved during the last years, available climate data is derived from weather stations placed in the outskirts of the city. Hence, urban heat island effect is not considered in energy simulations, which implies an important lack of accuracy. Since 1980's several international studies have been conducted on the urban heat island (UHI) phenomena, which modifies the atmospheric conditions of the urban centres due to urban agglomeration [1][2][3][4]. In the particular case of Madrid, multiple maps haven been generated using different methodologies during the last two decades [5][6][7]. These maps allow us to study the UHI phenomena from a wide perspective, offering however an static representation of it. Consequently a dynamic model for Madrid UHI is proposed, in order to evaluate it in a continuous way, and to be able to integrate it in building energy simulations.

El riesgo de accidente por deslizamiento en los suelos de los edificios existentes. La resbaladicidad como patología y el ensayo del péndulo de fricción

El Código Técnico de la Edificación (CTE) aprobado en 2006 reguló por primera vez el riesgo de caída debido al deslizamiento de los suelos (Documento Básico SUA Seguridad de utilización y accesibilidad). En el CTE se optó por utilizar el ensayo del péndulo descrito en la norma UNE ENV 12633 y que se realiza en húmedo. No sólo existen muchos otros ensayos, como el ensayo de la rampa, deslizadores dinámicos y estáticos, etc., sino que el propio ensayo del péndulo presenta variaciones entre las distintas normas en las que están descritos, entre otros aspectos, las distintas gomas para la zapata, las condiciones en seco o húmedo, el distinto número de medidas o el número de muestras. En edificios existentes es habitual encontrar suelos que presentan muy baja resistencia al deslizamiento, o que la han perdido con el tiempo, y que son frecuentes causas de accidentes. El ensayo del péndulo tiene la ventaja de que permite su realización “in situ” sobre suelos existentes, pero algunas consideraciones siguen debatiéndose en la literatura científica: ¿Es razonable ensayar siempre en condiciones húmedas o sería más apropiado ensayar en seco? ¿Son las distintas gomas igualmente apropiadas? ¿Cuál es la relación entre la rugosidad superficial del pavimento y el valor del péndulo de fricción? El objetivo de la investigación que se está llevando a cabo es analizar las fortalezas y debilidades del método de ensayo del péndulo de fricción en suelos pulidos, y la influencia de algunos de los parámetros mencionados con el objeto de que esta información pueda servir para optimizar el ensayo.

Thermal characterization of urban heat island (UHI) according to urban morphology of Madrid

Present research is framed within the project MODIFICA (MODelo predictivo - edIFIcios - Isla de Calor Urbana) aimed at developing a predictive model for dwelling energy performance under the urban heat island effect in order to implement it in the evaluation of real energy demand and consumption of dwellings as well as in the selection of energy retrofitting strategies. It is funded by Programa de I+D+i orientada a los retos de la sociedad 'Retos Investigación' 2013. The scope of our predictive model is defined by the heat island effect (UHI) of urban structures that compose the city of Madrid. In particular, we focus on the homogeneous areas for urban structures with the same urban and building characteristics. Data sources for the definition of such homogeneous areas were provided by previous research on the UHI of Madrid. The objective is to establish a critical analysis of climate records used for energy simulation tools, which data come from weather stations placed in decontextualized areas from the usual urban reality, where the thermal conditions differs by up to 6ºC. In this way, we intend to develop a new predictive model for the consumption and demand in buildings depending on their location, the urban structure and the associated UHI, improving the future energy rehabilitation interventions

Fuel poverty analysis in three spanish autonomous regions. Some retrofitting policy considerations

A person is to be regarded as living ‘in fuel poverty’ if he is a member of a household living on a lower income in a home which cannot be kept warm at a reasonable cost. This situation is mainly triggered by three factors: low household income, lack of energy efficiency and high energy invoices. Some European countries have already made some advantages towards officially defining fuel poverty in their countries. Nevertheless, in Spain only some research has been done and an official definition of the term is yet to come. This research explores the relation among households’ income, energy expenditure and housing stock in three autonomous regions in Spain in order to evaluate the housing stock of the fuel poor as well as to identify those households more in need. The results of the research allow establishing energy retrofitting priorities of existing housing stock as well as identifying current retrofitting policies limitations on order to tackle fuel poverty.

Some recent applications of non-linear models to the engineering practice

The Department of Structural Analysis of the University of Santander has been for a longtime involved in the solution of the country´s practical engineering problems. Some of these have required the use of non-conventional methods of analysis, in order to achieve adequate engineering answers. As an example of the increasing application of non-linear computer codes in the nowadays engineering practice, some cases will be briefly presented. In each case, only the main features of the problem involved and the solution used to solve it will be shown

In search of requirements analyst characteristics that influence requirements elicitation effectiveness: a quasi-experiment

Context: Elicitation effectiveness depends on non-wellunderstood analyst?s skills and abilities. Identifying which analysts? characteristics have stronger influence on elicitation may help to improve requirements quality. Objective: Identify the analysts? characteristics that influence on the elicitation effectiveness. Method: We analyzed the impact of: the analyst?s experience in interviews, elicitation and requirements; their academic qualifications, the familiarity with problem domain and the time spent during the elicitation session in the effectiveness of the elicitation and subsequent consolidation of requirements, using a quasi-experiment. Results: The knowledge of the problem domain, the analysts? academic qualifications and the elicitation time do not appear to influence the effectiveness of the elicitation sessions. The analyst?s experience exerts a slight negative influence on the effectiveness of the elicitation session. The analyst?s experience and familiarity with problem domain adversely affect the consolidation process. Finally, the analyst?s academic qualifications have a strong positive impact(statistically significant) on the effectiveness of the consolidation process. Conclusions: Although the evidence is still scarce, it seems the analyst's confidence on his own experience may be harmful in some cases. Specific training in software requirements may yield much higher gains than non-specific analyst experience.

A plastic analysis of nonprismatic folded plate structures

A computer method for the plastic analysis of folded plate structures is presented. The method considers the specific characteristics of the folded plate structural model using a simplified one-dimensional theory. and it can be applied to the analysis of any type of folded pIates, either prismatic or nonprismatic, with arbitrary cross-section. A simple example is analyzed in order to show the possibilities of the procedure and some results of interest are presented
