SCOPS OWLS' DATASETS TO STUDY THE FITNESS CONSEQUENCES OF ASSORTMENT BASED ON COLORATION AND BODY SIZE

[Description of methods used for collection/generation of data] Every year, we visited nest boxes where scops owls breed once a week until egg-laying was detected. Then, just before the estimated hatching date we visited them to capture and ring the incubating female by hand. After hatching, nests were monitored weekly to record brood size and the number of fledglings and to make owlet measurements. Males were captured with nest-traps at night during the chick-rearing period while delivering food to the nests. At capture, we took individual measurements and ringed birds. In addition, in the first third of the nesting period, parental feeding behavior was filmed at nests after dawn with infrared cameras located inside nest boxes. From these recordings we calculated parental feeding rate and determined the total richness of prey delivered to the owlets., The persistence of color polymorphism in nature, essential for maintaining genetic diversity, may be driven by disassortative mating based on color. In birds, body size often correlates with coloration, complicating mating patterns, as selective pressures favoring mixed-color pairs might counterbalance sized-based selection. This complexity is heightened in species with reversed sexual size dimorphism, such as owls, where smaller, agile males are likely favored for foraging efficiency. Here we investigate the fitness consequences of assortative mating by color and body size using a long-term dataset from the color polymorphic Eurasian Scops owl (Otus scops), a species with reversed sexual size dimorphism. Results reveal that size-assortative mating enhances reproductive success, as pairs with greater size similarity—particularly larger pairs—produce fitter offspring, a finding that challenges expectations under reversed sexual size dimorphism. Although body size and plumage coloration were correlated within pairs, only size similarity, not coloration, contributed to higher fitness. While color-based assortative mating had no direct impact on fitness, greyer pairs (usually smaller) exhibited higher feeding rates to offspring than browner pairs. These results underscore the importance of considering the adaptive value of body size and its covariation with color to understand the persistence of color polymorphisms in nature., The study was funded by the Spanish Ministries of Education and Science/FEDER and of Economy, Industry and Competitiveness, respectively, through the projects CGL2014-56769-P and CGL2017-83503-P., File List: A. The application of ultrasound to dry-cured ham may be an option to improve the flavor of meat products storage at vacuum for long periods of time. To investigate the ultrasound-induced influence on flavor characteristics of ham, slices of 9 and 12 months of processing were vacuum packaged and stored at refrigerated temperatures up to 40 d to study the changes of volatile compounds by using solid phase micro-extraction (SPME) and GC-MS and their sensory profile by free choice profile (FCP). Besides, the changes in physicochemical properties (pH, humidity, water activity, color and composition) after ultrasound and storage were determined. Results showed that ultrasound changed the flavor profile of ham slices especially in 12 m hams and after 40 d of storage, with decreased level of linear and Strecker aldehydes and increased level of ketones and alcohols. Sensory results suggested that ultrasound favored the formation of cured and nutty odors with a higher impact in long processing hams (12 m) as observed in the volatile profile as well as increased redness without affecting other physicochemical properties. Therefore, ultrasound is a potential approach to improve the flavor and color characteristics of dry-cured ham slices during vacuum refrigerated storage., This study forms part of the AGROALNEXT programme (grant AGROALNEXT/2022/031) and was supported by MCIU (Spain) with funding from European Union NextGenerationEU (PRTR-C17. NITIRSOIL: A MODEL FOR SITE-SPECIFIC NITROGEN MANAGEMENT OF MEDITERRANEAN VEGETABLE CROPS. THE BATCH MODE VERSION AND ASSOCIATED DATABASE USED IN THE VALIDATION [DATASET]

  • Paz, José Miguel De
  • Ramos, Carlos
  • Visconti Reluy, Fernando
The datasets for running the NITIRSOIL model in the batch mode are arranged in the MS Access® database “nitirsoil_batch.mdb”. This database was used to run the model in the batch mode with input data for the 107 simulations that made up the NITIRSOIL model validation. The database has seven tables to store the model parameters: “parameters_gener”, “parameters_desni”, “annual_crops_growth”, “tree_crops_growth”, “Kvol_ferti”, “Manure”, “Fertilizer”; other seven tables to store the model input data: “input_table_main”, “Batch_crop_irrigat”, “batch_crops_N”, “water_nitrate”, “soil_gen”, “soil_parameters”, “climate_year_month”, and two tables to store the output data: “output_table_Wbal” and “output_table_Nbal”. An additional “output_N_balance query” was included in the database to summarize the data of each simulation with the main terms of the nitrogen balance for the crop duration in a way that can be easily copied and pasted in the table “Validation_NITIRSOIL_batch.xls” to ease comparison of simulated and observed data for the validation. In the table “Validation_nitirsoil_batch.xls” the observed data used in the NITIRSOIL validation were included. The data from 107 experimental treatments of 35 experimental fields and 11 vegetables crops (artichoke, onion, potato, carrot, spinach, leek, cauliflower, Chinese cabbage, red cabbage, lettuce, romanesco broccoli) were organized in this table to allow the comparison with the simulated model output. All the experiments for the model validation were carried out in several locations of the Valencian Community (Spain). The batch version of the model “NITIRSOIL_BATCH” was also included to perform all the simulations of the validation., Peer reviewed
