KAIZEN–KATA, A PROBLEM-SOLVING APPROACH TO PUBLIC SERVICE HEALTH CARE IN MEXICO. A MULTIPLE-CASE STUDY

  • Suárez-Barraza, Manuel F.
  • Miguel Dávila, José Ángel
3297, Purpose: Mexico’s public hospitals are experiencing major operational problems which seriously a ect the care of Mexican citizens. Some hospitals have initiated e orts to apply the Kaizen philosophy to improve this situation. Therefore, the purpose of this article is to analyze the methodological impact of Kaizen–Kata implementation in Mexican public hospitals that have tried to solve operational problems using this improvement approach. Design/Methodology/Approach: The service organization implemented Kaizen–Kata methodology in order to improve one operational problem-process in health care. A case-study approach was used in this research in order to understand the e ects of the Kaizen–Kata methodology in solving problems in their operational procedures. Findings: Six specific drivers were identified when applying the Kaizen–Kata methodology. Furthermore, the impact on the levels of implementation of the Kaizen–Kata methodology in each of the improvement teams studied was also identified. Research Limitations: The main limitation of the research is that only three case-studies are presented thus it is not possible to generalize its results. Practical Implications (Where Possible): Other public hospitals can use this specific example as a working guide to solve the operational problems of health systems. Originality/Value: A methodology of continuous improvement in manufacturing was imported from the industry sector for application in an operational health care process. The Kaizen–Kata methodology contributed significantly to improving issues involving delays, customer complaints, process reworks and extra-cost, among other e ects of operational problems., SI

EFFECT OF CORPORATE SCIENTISTS ON FIRMS’ INNOVATION ACTIVITY: A LITERATURE REVIEW

  • Herrera, Liliana
45 p., This study reviews the literature on the effect of corporate scientists on firms’ innovation activities. Traditionally, the scientist’s role in a firm is linked to the processes of generation and absorption of scientific knowledge. However, a growing number of studies over the years show that the scientist’s role in firm innovation processes is more extensive and that they contribute to the development of successful new products, processes and services. However, there are no comprehensive reviews of this literature. This paper fills the gap by providing a systematic review of the empirical literature on the role of the corporate scientists in the innovation process by investigating: (1) theoretical approaches used to evaluate the impact of scientists, (2) the importance for the firm’s innovation activity of scientists’ heterogeneity, (3) those firm innovation activities over which scientists exhibit more influence, (4) the variables moderating the effect of scientists and (5) research implications for managers., SI

779, The main aim of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of using mobile apps combined with traditional methods for teaching sustainability and corporate social responsibility (CSR) to undergraduate students. Although previous papers stated the importance of apps, they showed no conclusive results, and there are few studies analyzing their importance in management training, and particularly in sustainability management. To achieve our main goal, drawing upon the action learning system, we designed and implemented several training sessions combining traditional methods and apps. The effectiveness of teaching methods was assessed with two surveys (pre- and post-training) with questions about sustainable consumption, lifestyle, and CSR management. The results demonstrate that students found this type of learning beneficial, showing an increase in their commitment to social and environmental issues. These findings underline the potential for apps in teaching sustainability at undergraduate levels in combination with more traditional methods., SI

SERVICE-LEARNING FOR SUSTAINABILITY ENTREPRENEURSHIP IN RURAL AREAS: WHAT IS ITS GLOBAL IMPACT ON BUSINESS UNIVERSITY STUDENTS?

  • Martínez Campillo, Almudena
  • Sierra Fernández, María del Pilar
  • Fernández Santos, Yolanda
5296, Service-Learning (SL) is a teaching innovation method that combines learning and social service objectives to improve educational quality and graduate employability. To date, there are hardly any studies on its global impact on university students. This paper describes and evaluates an SL experience for Sustainability Entrepreneurship in the context of Spanish Higher Education. Based on knowledge acquired in classrooms, multi-disciplinary teams of students from di erent subjects related to Business Administration o ered support to potential entrepreneurs from rural municipalities in the complex task of writing a successful Business Plan for their projects for local sustainability. Within this academic framework, our study has two goals: (1) to assess the self-perception of university students about the improvement in their curricular development, professional skills and civic-social responsibility after participating in the SL experience; and (2) to estimate its possible e ect on academic performance. The results show that the students acknowledged they had improved their social and sustainability commitment and their curricular development, and had acquired skills that society increasingly demands from future business professionals. Furthermore, service-students achieved significantly higher academic performance than a control group of non-participating students. These findings highlight the e ectiveness of SL to provide a more holistic education for business university students., SI

REVERSE LOGISTICS AND URBAN LOGISTICS: MAKING A LINK

  • Rubio, Sergio
  • Miranda, Francisco J.
  • Jiménez Parra, Beatriz
  • Chamorro Mera, Antonio
5684, This work is aimed at analyzing potential links between reverse logistics and urban logistics and describing opportunities for collaboration between both areas of research. A description of the current state-of-the-art is provided in order to highlight the main challenges faced by both disciplines. For example, regarding reverse logistics, new recovery options, marketing strategies for recovered products, and legislation issues on the return of products in specific contexts; in regards to urban logistics, long-term planning, stakeholders’ engagement, information management, efficiency, reliability and safety, and new business models are some of such key challenges. Despite the growing interest shown in both logistics areas and their relevance for companies and consumers, reverse logistics and urban logistics are two concepts that are still somewhat unknown and, above all, treated as being relatively separated. However, there exist some aspectswhere the two disciplines converge and thatmay represent opportunities for collaboration, for example, the proper treatment and management of urban waste, and the efficient management of commercial refunds and returns. In addition, other key issues, such as land use, city typology, infrastructures, and stakeholders’ engagement should be further analyzed in order to keep advancing in the description of links between both areas., SI

LEGAL AND CULTURAL FACTORS AS CATALYSTS FOR PROMOTING WOMEN IN THE BOARDROOM

  • Cabeza García, Laura
  • Del Brio, Esther B.
  • Rueda, Carlos
12 p., This study focuses on whether regulation as well as national cultures play significant roles in defining women’s role in society. We are contributing to the existing debate by providing the first empirical analysis to calibrate which legal mechanisms and cultural dimensions are more efficient in achieving boardroom gender equality. We have highlighted the impact of regulation by distinguishing between those countries that have passed positive laws imposing gender quotas in the boardroom and those applying the ‘comply or explain’ recommendation in their good governance codes. We have monitored enforcement levels among countries and tested the validity of Hofstede’s cultural factors in impacting on gender quotas. The emerging picture is that of gender diversity being triggered by the adoption of positive laws rather than by soft recommendations. Moreover, gender diversity policies are more commonly promoted in countries where governments, corporations and institutions are characterized by less masculinity and lower power distance., SI

HOW DOES RECIPROCITY AFFECT UNDERGRADUATE STUDENT ORIENTATION TOWARDS STAKEHOLDERS?

  • Godos Díez, José Luis de
  • Fernández Gago, Roberto
  • Cabeza García, Laura
5987, Nowadays, students are more aware of the impact of companies on their stakeholders and the need for properly handling their expectations to operationalize corporate social responsibility. Nevertheless, little is known about how certain individual traits may relate to their stance on the issue. This exploratory research contributes to stakeholder theory by analysing the e ect of the individual’s decision-making process, including the consideration of their social preferences, on their orientation toward stakeholder management. Here, we draw upon a theoretical model for resource-allocation decision-making consisting of reciprocal and non-reciprocal components. Our data, from undergraduate students enrolled in di erent degrees, were collected through a questionnaire and two social within-subject experiments (ultimatum and dictator games). Thus, our results show that the presence of a reciprocal component when decisions are made is positively linked to an instrumental orientation toward stakeholders. In addition, a greater non-reciprocal component in the decision-making process corresponds to a more normative orientation., SI

DRIVERS OF INNOVATION IN STATE-OWNED ENTERPRISES: EVIDENCE TO PUBLIC ENTERPRISES FROM ECUADOR

  • Argothy, Anderson
  • González Álvarez, Nuria
p. 45-63, The current studies on innovation do not consider or tend to ignore innovation in Public Enterprises (PE) and their effects on other organizations. Recent evidence shows that PE are not necessarily inferior to their private counterparts (Kowalski, Büge, Sztajerowska, & Egeland, 2013). This article investigates the determinants of innovation in PE of Ecuador, for the first time, through an empirical study. It identifies internal and external determinants of innovation and the effect on the probability of innovation in PE. In addition, the variable environmental care is included as an internal determinant; this variable has not been analyzed in previous work on innovation in PE. The data used come from the Survey of Activities of Science, Technology, and Innovation of Ecuador (ACTI) published in 2014. The proposed model is estimated by logit linear regression. The results show that there are determinants that have a positive effect on the probability of innovation and they are of two types: internal (workers training, technology acquisition and environmental care) and external (government, through the support program for quality management)., SI

CORPORATE GOVERNANCE AND INNOVATION: A THEORETICAL REVIEW

  • Asensio Lòpez, Diego
  • Cabeza García, Laura
  • González Álvarez, Nuria
p. 266-284, Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to present a review of the literature on two lines of research, corporate governance and innovation, explaining how different internal corporate governance mechanisms may be determinants of business innovation. Design/methodology/approach – It explores the theoretical background and the empirical evidence regarding the influence of both ownership structure and the board of directors on company innovation. Then, conclusions are drawn and possible future research lines are presented. Findings – No consensus was observed regarding the relation between corporate governance and innovation, with both positive and negative arguments being found, and with empirical evidence not always pointing in the same direction. Thus, new studies trying to clarify this relationship are needed. Originality/value – Over recent years, interest has grown in the influence of governance mechanisms on innovation decisions taken by the management. Innovation efforts and results depend on factors that are influenced by corporate governance, such as ownership structure or the functioning of the board of directors. Thus, the paper shows an updated state of the art in this field proposing future lines for empirical research., SI
