Analysis of a New Teaching Approach to teach chemical bonding to High School Spanish students

  • González-Felipe, María Esther

  • Vázquez, Ana M.
  • Aguirre Pérez, Constancio
  • Cortés Simarro, José Manuel
This report shows the design and implementation of a New Teaching Approach (NTA) for chemical bonding to 1st year high school students (16-18y). To design and test the proposal several key aspect regarding chemical bonding have been determined after taking into consideration the student preconceptions. The NTA has been implemented in one experimental group while the control one has been taught with traditional methodology. The same comprehensive test has been offered to both groups after being taught chemical bonding, and the answers have been analysed. In the findings it is observed that the proposed NTA and the used teaching strategies let students develop a higher thinking analysis and a deeper knowledge of chemical bonding, although still some aspects regarding the role of energy in bond formation should be improved in NTA.

Wavelet transforms and pattern recognition on ultrasonic guides waves for frozen surface state diagnosis

Icing blades require of advanced condition monitoring systems to reduce the failures and downtimes in Wind Turbine Blades (WTB). This paper presents a case study that combines ultrasonic techniques with Wavelet transforms for detecting ice on the blades. Lamb waves were generated with Macro Fibre Composites (MFC) and then were collected with MFC. Ice affects to the normal propagation of the wave through the material of the blade. The changes in the signal are due to the forces that ice exercise on the surface. Three different scenarios were considered: at room temperature; the frozen blade without accumulation of ice, and; the frozen blade with accumulation of ice on its surface. The novel approach can determine the state of the WTB. It leads a reduction of costs in inspection, downtime and the appearance of false alarms.

Relative Age Effect in UEFA Championship Soccer Players

  • González-Víllora, Sixto

Relative Age Effect (RAE) is the breakdown by both age grouping and dates of birth of athletes. In the past 20 years the existence of this effect has been shown with higher or smaller impact in multiple sports, including soccer. The purpose of this study was to identify the existence of RAE in European soccer players. The sample included 841 elite soccer players who were participants in the UEFA European Soccer Championship in different categories. The professional category (n = 368), U-19 (n = 144) and U-17 (n = 145) were in 2012, and U-21 was in 2011 (n = 184). The Kolmogorov-Smirnov test and the Levene test recommended the use of nonparametric statistics. The results obtained by the square test ( the Kruskal-Wallis test and Cohen’s effect sizes revealed the existence of RAE (χ2 = 17.829, p < 0.001; d = 0.30), with the size of their different effects depending on their category or qualifying round achieved by the national team and the existence of significance in the observed differences by category. Therefore, we could continue examining RAE which is present in elite soccer, and could be considered a factor that influences performance of the national teams tested. RAE was not evident in the professional teams analysed, however it was present in the three lower categories analysed (youth categories), with its influence being greater on younger age categories (U-17).

On the Periods of Parallel Dynamical Systems

In this work, we provide conditions to obtain fixed point theorems for parallel dynamical systems over graphs with (Boolean) maxterms and minterms as global evolution operators. In order to do that, we previously prove that periodic orbits of different periods cannot coexist, which implies that Sharkovsky’s order is not valid for this kind of dynamical systems

Border Collision Bifurcations in a Generalized Model of Population Dynamics

We analyze the dynamics of a generalized discrete time population model of a two-stage species with recruitment and capture. This generalization, which is inspired by other approaches and real data that one can find in literature, consists in considering no restriction for the value of the two key parameters appearing in the model, that is, the natural death rate and the mortality rate due to fishing activity. In the more general case the feasibility of the system has been preserved by posing opportune formulas for the piecewise map defining the model. The resulting two-dimensional nonlinear map is not smooth, though continuous, as its definition changes as any border is crossed in the phase plane. Hence, techniques from the mathematical theory of piecewise smooth dynamical systems must be applied to show that, due to the existence of borders, abrupt changes in the dynamic behavior of population sizes and multistability emerge. The main novelty of the present contribution with respect to the previous ones is that, while using real data, richer dynamics are produced, such as fluctuations and multistability. Such new evidences are of great interest in biology since new strategies to preserve the survival of the species can be suggested.
