El fenómeno de la dispersión urbana está modificando el modelo de ocupación del suelo de las ciudades españolas propiciando así que ciudades tradicionalmente compactas hayan experimentado un crecimiento disperso, que a la larga resultará ser poco sostenible. Como solución a esta problemática se consideran los sistemas policéntricos. Se realiza una comparación basada en el índice de Nelson de la jerarquía urbana de Cantabria a partir de servicios y centros de trabajo, y de las relaciones de dependencia intermunicipal para acceder al comercio y servicios. Los resultados han servido para proponer un sistema territorial equilibrado rompiendo la progresiva tendencia de litoralización de la población y actividades. Finalmente se plantean medidas que fomenten la integración de las políticas de transporte, de planificación urbanística y de ordenación del territorio, basándose en la coordinación y cooperación administrativa y de los agentes sociales, y en la definición de estrategias a medio y largo plazo., Urban sprawl is now transforming the land use pattern of Spanish cities from the compact to the dispersed city, which eventually has shown to be less sustainable. Polycentric systems based on decentralised concentration are possible solutions for a more balanced territory. In this paper, the urban hierarchy of Cantabria (Spain) is analyzed using a comparison based on Nelson's index and being services, work centres, and the relations of intermunicipal dependence to accede to retail and services the input data. The results have served to propose a territorial balanced system, so breaking the progressive trend of coastal concentration of both population and activities. Finally measures that encourage transport, land use and spatial planning policies are suggested. These measures require a higher co-operation between public administrations and also between these and the social and economic agents , and the definition of mid- and longterm strategies., El fenomen de la dispersió urbana està modificant el model d’ocupació del sòl de les ciutats espanyoles, provocant que les ciutats tradicionalment compactes hagin experimentat un creixement dispers, que a la llarga resultarà ser poc sostenible. IEEE-1451[1] and OGC Sensor Web Enablement (OGC SWE)[2] define standard protocols to operate instruments, including methods to calibrate, configure, trigger data acquisition, and retrieve instrument data based on specified temporal and geospatial criteria. These standards also provide standard ways to describe instrument capabilities, properties, and data structures produced by the instrument. These standard operational protocols and descriptions enable observing systems to manage very diverse instruments as well as to acquire, process, and interpret their data in a uniform and automated manner. We refer to this property as “instrument interoperability”. Analysis and simulation of a MMCC-SSBC converter

Battery energy storage systems (BESS) are the most versatile type of energy storage. With an increasing share of renewable energy, they could prove to be essential to provide the much needed flexibility. The MMCC-SSBC might be the most suitable converter for modern BESS. It is modular, and allows for an individualized treatment of the connected battery modules. The main objective of this thesis is to develop a tool which simulates the behavior of a MMCC-SSBC converter. This objective is fulfilled by the core deliverable of the thesis: a Matlab implementation of a dynamic model of the converter. As a secondary objective, this thesis aims to demonstrate the usefulness of this tool. It applies the tool to a specific use case, and analyzes three key characteristics based on the simulations: efficiency, power quality and reliability. This leads to some concise design guidelines, and continued operation under a battery short-circuit fault.

Code-timing synchronization in DS-CDMA systems using space-time diversity

The synchronization of a desired user transmitting a known training sequence in a direct-sequence (DS) asynchronous code-division multiple-access (CDMA) sys-tem is addressed. It is assumed that the receiver consists of an arbitrary antenna array and works in a near-far, frequency-nonselective, slowly fading channel. The estimator that we propose is derived by applying the maximum likelihood (ML) principle to a signal model in which the contribution of all the interfering compo-nents (e.g., multiple-access interference, external interference and noise) is modeled as a Gaussian term with an unknown and arbitrary space-time correlation matrix. The main contribution of this paper is the fact that the estimator makes eÆcient use of the structure of the signals in both the space and time domains. Its perfor-mance is compared with the Cramer-Rao Bound, and with the performance of other methods proposed recently that also employ an antenna array but only exploit the structure of the signals in one of the two domains, while using the other simply as a means of path diversity. It is shown that the use of the temporal and spatial structures is necessary to achieve synchronization in heavily loaded systems or in the presence of directional external interference., Peer Reviewed

Quantifying the benefits of SPECint distant parallelism in simultaneous multithreading architectures

We exploit the existence of distant parallelism that future compilers could detect and characterise its performance under simultaneous multithreading architectures. By distant parallelism we mean parallelism that cannot be captured by the processor instruction window and that can produce threads suitable for parallel execution in a multithreaded processor. We show that distant parallelism can make feasible wider issue processors by providing more instructions from the distant threads, thus better exploiting the resources from the processor in the case of speeding up single integer applications. We also investigate the necessity of out-of-order processors in the presence of multiple threads of the same program. It is important to notice at this point that the benefits described are totally orthogonal to any other architectural techniques targeting a single thread., Peer Reviewed

A new labeling construction from the -product

The ¿h-product that is referred in the title was introduced in 2008 as a generalization of the Kronecker product of digraphs. Many relations among labelings have been obtained since then, always using as a second factor a family of super edge-magic graphs with equal order and size. In this paper, we introduce a new labeling construction by changing the role of the factors. Using this new construction the range of applications grows up considerably. In particular, we can increase the information about magic sums of cycles and crowns.

A new thermocline-PCM thermal storage concept for CSP plants. Numerical analysis and perspectives

Thermocline storage concept has been considered for more than a decade as a possible solution to reduce the huge cost of the storage system in CSP plants. However, one of the drawbacks of this concept is the decrease in its performance throughout the time. The objective of this paper is to present a new thermocline-PCM storage concept which aims at circumventing this issue. The concept proposed is built of different solid filler materials and encapsulated PCMs combined into a multi-layer storage tank with molten salt as heat transfer fluid. The performance evaluation of each of the prototypes proposed is virtually tested by means of a detailed numerical methodology which considers the heat transfer and fluid dynamics phenomena present in these devices. The virtual tests carried out are designed so as to take into account several charging and discharging cycles until equilibrium is achieved, i.e. the same amount of energy stored in the charging phase is delivered in the discharge. As a result, the dependence of the storage capacity on the PCMs temperatures, the total energy stored/released, as well as the efficiencies of the storing process have been compared for the different thermocline, PCM-only and multi-layered thermocline-PCM configurations. Integración de nanopartículas para la liberación de fármacos por electroestimulación en andamios poliméricos biodegradables

Este trabajo revisa la aplicación de polímeros intrínsecamente conductores (ICP) en la administración de fármacos. Los ICP son polímeros orgánicos con propiedades eléctricas, magnéticas y ópticas usualmente asociadas con metales, manteniendo propiedades mecánicas ventajosas y facilitación de procesamiento usualmente asociadas con polímeros. Debido a las propiedades inherentes de estos materiales únicos, la estimulación eléctrica puede utilizar para alterar el estado redox de los ICPs, que a su vez puede modificar la velocidad de liberación del fármaco. La liberación controlada de fármacos de los ICP ha sido investigada desde los años ochenta. El PEDOT y sus derivados son miembros relativamente nuevos de la familia ICP, y están entre los polímeros conjugados más exitosos y útiles debido a su alta estabilidad, banda baja, alta conductividad y excelente transparencia en su estado dopado. El PEDOT, en común con otros polímeros conductores, es intratable cuando se polimeriza por una ruta química convencional. Este trabajo proporciona una visión general de la síntesis y las propiedades del PEDOT cargado con un fármaco denominado curcumina. La técnica de electrospinning ha sido ampliamente estudiada durante los últimos años gracias a la posibilidad de crear fibras en escala micro y nanométrica para una gran variedad de aplicaciones biomédicas. Esta técnica aporta a los elementos desarrollados diversas características como: amplia superficie por unidad de área, porosidad y una serie de propiedades mecánicas, siendo atractiva a nivel biotecnológico. La técnica es versátil y de fácil ensamble lo que ha permitido procesar una gran variedad de polímeros, integrando en los últimos años otras clases de materiales. Sin embargo, durante el desarrollo del proceso existen una serie de variables que influyen en las características de los elementos obtenidos, ya sea porque están ligadas a las características del material base o porque su desempeño está relacionado con otros parámetros dentro del proceso. El objetivo de esta revisión es clarificar la influencia e interrelación de algunas variables en el proceso, así como dar a conocer los más importantes avances en el desarrollo de la técnica y en lo referente a liberación de fármacos.
