Measurement of moisture in mortar using a coplanar waveguide

Increasingly more non-destructive testing methods are being developed in a civil engineering context, but many of them cannot be applied when only one surface of the structure can be accessed. In order to measure moisture level in such concrete structures as dams or tunnels, a coplanar line was designed, capable to measure the permittivity evolution as well as the loss factor. Measurements on salinity of water and setting of mortar were performed, showing a dependence on physical magnitudes of interest with the electrical parameters measured.

Relações entre o mercado, a cidade e a borda dágua em espaços centrais de cidades litorâneas: estudo de Caso de Laguna, Florianópolis e São Francisco do Sul

Este trabalho apresenta um estudo sobre urbanidade em centros históricos de cidades litorâneas. Como objeto de pesquisa foram selecionadas as cidades de Laguna, Florianópolis e São Francisco do Sul, no litoral do estado de Santa Catarina, Brasil. A metodologia utilizada tem abordagem qualitativa e exploratória, que pretende conciliar o olhar axial e panorâmico do planejamento com o olhar intimista e humanista do indivíduo, buscando com isso compreender aspectos de urbanidade. O método envolve pesquisa iconográfica em arquivos municipais e estaduais, levantamento das áreas de estudo no registro de informações urbano-arquitetônica e utiliza os cortes urbanos como instrumento de leitura em paralelo com o método etnográfico do diário de campo. Os resultados introduzem formas de apropriação em centros históricos costeiros de cidades luso-brasileiras e a interação entre o mercado público, a orla aquática e os aspectos de urbanidade que se apresentam nestes espaços., This paper presents a study about historical centers on coastal cities. As object of study were selected the cities of Laguna, Florianopolis and Sao Francisco do Sul, on the coast of the State of Santa Catarina, Brasil. The methodology applied has qualitative and exploratory approach, which pretends to conciliate the axial-panoramic planning view, alongside the intimate and humanistic individual look seeking understand faces of urbanity. The method involves iconographic research on state and municipal historical files, analysis of the study areas at the record of urban-architectural information and uses the urban section as reading instrument alongside the ethnographic method of field diary. The results introduce appropriation on historic centers of Portuguese-Brazilian cities and the interaction between the public market, the seashore and the urbanities outlook presented on these spaces.

Cascades tolerance of scale-free networks with attack cost

Network robustness against cascades is a major topic in the fields of complex networks. In this paper, we propose an attack-cost-based cascading failure model, where the attack cost of nodes is positively related to its degree. We compare four attacking strategies: the random removal strategy (RRS), the low-degree removal strategy (LDRS), the high-degree removal strategy (HDRS) and the genetic algorithm removal strategy (GARS). It is shown that the network robustness against cascades is heavily affected by attack costs and the network exhibits the weakest robustness under GARS. We also explore the relationship between the network robustness and tolerance parameter under these attacking strategies. The simulation results indicate that the critical value of tolerance parameter under GARS is greatly larger than that of other attacking strategies. Is Arm software ecosystem ready for HPC?

In recent years, the HPC community has increasingly grown its interest towards the Arm architecture with research projects targeting primarily the installation of Arm-based clusters. State of the art research project examples are the European Mont-Blanc, the Japanese Post-K, and the UKs GW4/EPSRC. Primarily attention is usually given to hardware platforms, and the Arm HPC community is growing as the hardware is evolving towards HPC workloads via solutions borrowed from mobile market e.g., big.LITTLE and additions such as Armv8-A Scalable Vector Extension (SVE) technology. However the availability of a mature software ecosystem and the possibility of running large and complex HPC applications plays a key role in the consolidation process of a new technology, especially in a conservative market like HPC. For this reason in this poster we present a preliminary evaluation of the Arm system software ecosystem, limited here to the Arm HPC Compiler and the Arm Performance Libraries, together with a porting and testing of three fairly complex HPC code suites: QuantumESPRESSO, WRF and FEniCS. The selection of these codes has not been totally random: they have been in fact proposed as HPC challenges during the last two editions of the Student Cluster Competition at ISC where all the authors have been involved operating an Arm-based cluster and awarded with the Fan Favorite award., The research leading to these results has received funding from the European Community's Seventh Framework Programme [FP7/2007-2013] and Horizon 2020 under the Mont-Blanc projects [3], grant agreements n. 288777, 610402 and 671697. The authors would also like to thank E4 Computer Engineering for providing part of the hardware resources needed for the evaluation carried out in this poster as well as for greatly supporting the Student Cluster Competition team.

Implantación del Solman para resolver una migración de SAP, Fases en un projecte de consultoría SAP

Actualmente estoy realizando prácticas en una empresa llamada Everis. Es una consultoría tecnológica y concretamente estoy en el departamento de SAP. Dentro de este departamento pertenezco en el equipo de trabajo de SAP Basis, tienen como principal responsabilidad tener una efectiva integridad en el sistema, lo que aplica a actualizar los sistemas de los clientes, mantener, instalar y hacer backup de las bases de datos. Aquí en la empresa se me asignó un tutor para hacer el seguimiento de las prácticas y el respectivo trabajo final de grado. Estuve hablando con mi tutor Raúl para ver qué tema podría ser el más adecuado para mis prácticas hasta que llegamos a la conclusión de hacer una migración a SAP S/4HANA ya que muchos clientes tendrán que adaptar su ERP a la nueva versión para beneficiarse en su empresa y además que lo haríamos a través de la potente herramienta del Solution Manager ya que él es experto en ella., I am currently practicing at a company called Everis. It is a technological consultancy and I am specifically in the SAP department. Inside this department I belong to the SAP Basis team, they have as main responsibility to have an effective integrity in the system, which applies to update the client's systems, maintain, install the systems and back-up the databases. Here at the company I was assigned a director to follow the practices and the respective final grade work. I was talking with my director Raúl to see which topic might be the most appropriate for my practices. We came to the conclusion of making a migration to SAP S/4HANA because many clients will have to adapt their ERP to the new version to benefit their company and also that we would do it with the powerful tool of Solution Manager because my director is an expert in it., Actualment estic realitzant pràctiques en una empresa anomenada Everis. És una consultoria tecnològica i concretament estic en el departament de SAP. Dins d'aquest departament pertanyo a l'equip de treball de SAP Basis, tenen com a principal responsabilitat tenir una efectiva integritat en el sistema, el que s'aplica a actualitzar els sistemes dels clients, mantenir, instal·lar i fer backup de les bases de dades. Aquí a l'empresa em van assignar un tutor per fer el seguiment de les pràctiques i el respectiu treball final de grau. An ambitious program to measure decay properties, primarily ß-delayed neutron emission probabilities and half-lives, for a significant number of nuclei near or on the path of the rapid neutron capture process, has been launched at the RIKEN Nishina Center. We give here an overview of the status of the project.

Extending JXTA protocols for P2P file sharing systems

File sharing is among the most important features of the today's Internet-based applications. Most of such applications are server-based approaches inheriting thus the disadvantages of centralized systems. Advances in P2P systems are allowing to share huge quantities of data and files in a distributed way. In this paper, we present extensions of JXTA protocols to support filesharing in P2P systems with the aim to overcome limitations of server-mediated approaches. Our proposal is validated in practice by deploying a P2P file sharing system in a real P2P network. Fitting a two-joint orthogonal chain to a point set

We study the problem of fitting a two-joint orthogonal polygonal chain to a set S of n points in the plane, where the objective function is to minimize the maximum orthogonal distance from S to the chain. We show that this problem can be solved in Θ(n) time if the orientation of the chain is fixed, and in Θ(n log n) time when the orientation is not a priori known. We also consider some variations of the problem in three-dimensions where a polygonal chain is interpreted as a configuration of orthogonal planes. In this case we obtain O(n) and O(n log n) time algorithms depending on which plane orientations are fixed.

Effect of large fuel tanks on aerodynamic performances of blended wind body aircraft

The Green House effect is one of the most important consequences of Green House Gases (GHG) emissions. The transport industry is an important GHG emitter due to its constant use of fossil fuels as energy source. Hence an alternative to the current fossil fuels must be implemented in order to assure the the survival of the different species that inhabit the Earth. This investigation can be summarized as the proposal for the use of hydrogen as the main source of energy in the aviation sector and the study of its impact on aerodynamic and economic performance. The low density of hydrogen generates, as a consequence, the need to use large fuel tanks, which are difficult to integrate in conventional aircrafts.The blended wing body (BWB) aircraft configuration has been proposed as key for the proper integration of hydrogen tanks due to its larger volume and streamlined shape. Several fuel tank integrations have been studied in order to see their impact on aerodynamic and economic behavior. The studied parameters have been calculated with two different methods, which have been compared. The CFD simulation allow us compute the aircraft aerodynamic performances such as the drag and lift coefficients. Furthermore, with conventional aircraft information from the Base of Aircraft Data (BADA), several regresion equations have been obtained, which give us the OEW, MTOW, drag and fuel consumption as a function of aircraft surface. A comparison between the drag obtained from both methods has been done, and the conclusion is that the results deduced from BADA differ from those from CFD due to the higher induced drag of conventional aircrafts. Thus, although computing the parameters from the empirical model (regression equations) results in worst aerodynamic performances, the method can be considered accurate enough. Finally, an analysis of the the several calculated parameters and a comparison with the respective parameters of the current aircrafts has been performed. Although the aerodynamic and economic behavior can be considered as proper, the necessary modifications of airport runways, taxiways, etc., and the difficulties associated with implementation of emergency exits could complicate the commercial success of models similar to those studied in this work. The objectives of the work have been successfully completed because we have been able to see the impact of introducing large fuel tanks on the aerodynamic and economic performance of a BWB, as well as the feasibility of its use.

Gestió integral d'un projecte de regeneració. El cas del terciari de l'EDAR de Terrassa-Les Fonts

El sistema de regeneració i reutilització d’aigües residuals (SRRAR) de l’EDAR de Terrassa - Les Fonts està constituït pels processos de coagulació-floculació, decantació, filtració, dessalinització i desinfecció. L’SRRAR té una capacitat per produir 6.500 m3/dia, amb els quals es preveu el subministrament d’uns 5.000 m3/dia per a reg de camps de golf i d’uns 1.500 m3/dia per a ús urbà no potable. Aquest sistema permet produir una aigua regenerada amb una qualitat que compleix els requisits, tant tècnics com sanitaris, necessaris per ser reutilitzada en el reg de tot tipus de gespa, incloent la que és sensible a la conductivitat. Aquest fet garanteix en tot moment la reutilització de l’aigua procedent del tractament secundari sense posar en risc ni la salut de les persones ni les inversions realitzades per a la sembra d’aquest tipus de conreu. La gestió de l’SRRAR també inclou un seguiment de la qualitat de l’aigua a la zona, mitjançant la presa de mostres i l’anàlisi de l’aigua emmagatzemada regenerada i, també, de les fonts d’aigua convencionals, ja siguin superficials o subterrànies. Els costos estimats en la producció de l’aigua regenerada i la seva reutilització posterior són competitius davant dels preus d’aigua procedent d’una font convencional que s’ofereixen en el mercat de la regió. Així mateix, la gestió integral d’aquest projecte de regeneració i reutilització garanteix als usuaris una aigua de qualitat, en quantitat suficient i econòmicament rendible.
