Using LMDI approach to analyze changes in carbon dioxide emissions of China’s logistics industry

Purpose: China is confronting with tremendous pressure in carbon emission reduction. While logistics industry seriously relies on fossil fuel, and emits greenhouse gas, especially carbon dioxide. The aim of this article is to estimate the carbon dioxide emission in China’s logistics sector, and analyze the causes for the change of carbon dioxide emission, and identify the critical factors which mainly drive the change in carbon dioxide emissions of China’s logistics industry. Design/methodology/approach: The logarithmic mean Divisia index (LMDI) method has often been used to analyze decomposition of energy consumption and carbon emission due to its theoretical foundation, adaptability, ease of use and result interpretation. So we use the LMDI method to analyze the changes in carbon dioxide emission of China’s logistics industry in this paper. Findings: By analyzing carbon dioxide emission of China’s logistics, the results show that the carbon dioxide emission of logistics in China has increased by 21.5 times, from 45.1 million tons to 1014.1 million tons in the research period. The highway transport is the main contributor to carbon dioxide emission in logistics industry. The energy intensity and carbon dioxide emission factors contributed to the reduction of carbon dioxide emission in China’s logistics industry in overall study period. Originality/value: Although a lot of literature have analyzed carbon dioxide emission in many industry sectors, such as manufacturing, iron and steel, pulp and paper, cement, glass industry, and so on. However, few scholars researched on carbon dioxide emission in logistics industry. Partial match queries in relaxed multidimensional search trees

Partial match queries arise frequently in the context of large databases, where each record contains a distinct multidimensional key, that is, the key of each record is a K-tuple of values. The components of a key are called the coordinates or attributes of the key. In a partial match query we specify the value of s attributes, 0 < s < K, and leave the remaining K - s attributes unspecified. The goal is to retrieve all the records in the database that match the specified attributes. In this paper we present several results about the average performance and variance of partial matches in relaxed K-dimensional trees (search trees and digital tries). These data structures are variants of the well known K d-trees and K d-tries. In relaxed trees the sequence of attributes used to guide a query is explicitly stored at the nodes of the tree and randomly generated and, in general, will be different for different search paths. In the standard variants, the sequence of attributes that guides a query examines the attributes in a cyclic fashion, fixed and identical for all search paths. We show that the probabilistic analysis of the relaxed multidimensional trees is very similar to that of standard K d-trees and K d-tries, and also to the analysis of quadtrees. In fact, besides the average cost and variance of partial match in relaxed K d-trees and K d-tries, we also obtain the variance of partial matches in two-dimensional quadtrees. We also compute the average cost of partial matches in other relaxed multidimensional digital tries, namely, relaxed K d-Patricia and relaxed K d-digital search trees

A qualitative multi-attribute model for the selection of the private hydropower plant investments in Turkey: by foundation of the search results clustering engine (Carrot2), hydropower plant clustering, DEXi and DEXiTree

Purpose: The electricity demand in Turkey has been increasing for a while. Hydropower is one of the major electricity generation types to compensate this electricity demand in Turkey. Private investors (domestic and foreign) in the hydropower electricity generation sector have been looking for the most appropriate and satisfactory new private hydropower investment (PHPI) options and opportunities in Turkey. This study aims to present a qualitative multiattribute decision making (MADM) model, that is easy, straightforward, and fast for the selection of the most satisfactory reasonable PHPI options during the very early investment stages (data and information poorness on projects). Design/methodology/approach: The data and information of the PHPI options was gathered from the official records on the official websites. A wide and deep literature review was conducted for the MADM models and for the hydropower industry. The attributes of the model were identified, selected, clustered and evaluated by the expert decision maker (EDM) opinion and by help of an open source search results clustering engine (Carrot2) (helpful for also comprehension). The PHPI options were clustered according to their installed capacities main property to analyze the options in the most appropriate, decidable, informative, understandable and meaningful way. A simple clustering algorithm for the PHPI options was executed in the current study. A template model for the selection of the most satisfactory PHPI options was built in the DEXi (Decision EXpert for Education) and the DEXiTree software. Findings: The basic attributes for the selection of the PHPI options were presented and afterwards the aggregate attributes were defined by the bottom-up structuring for the early investment stages. The attributes were also analyzed by help of Carrot2. The most satisfactory PHPI options in Turkey in the big options data set were selected for each PHPI options cluster by the EDM evaluations in the DEXi. Originality/value: The recommended DEXi PHPI selection model by the search results clustering engine within a country wise case offered the possibility of easy, meaningful and satisfying continental or worldwide applications for the private investors and the international financial institutions such as the African Development Bank, or the World Bank was the main contribution., Peer Reviewed

Estimating Energy Savings in Smart Street Lighting by Using an Adaptive Control System

The driving force behind the smart city initiative is to offer better, more specialized services which can improve the quality of life of the citizens while promoting sustainability. To achieve both of these apparently competing goals, services must be increasingly autonomous and continuously adaptive to changes in their environment and the information coming from other services. In this paper we focus on smart lighting, a relevant application domain for which we propose an intelligent street light control system based on adaptive behavior rules. We evaluate our approach by using a simulator which combines wireless sensor networks and belief-desire-intention (BDI) agents to enable a precise simulation of both the city infrastructure and the adaptive behavior that it implements.The results reveal energy savings of close to 35% when the lighting systemimplements an adaptive behavior as opposed to a rigid, predefined behavior., Thiswork has been funded by the Spanish Ministry of Science and Technology under the Grant TIN2010-16497 “Técnicas Escalables de E/S en Entornos Distribuidos y de Computación de Altas Prestaciones.”, Peer Reviewed

We designed and implemented an automatic 3D scanning system for acquiring 3D models from mid-complexity objects. The system includes the acquisition of the data, the processing steps, and the mesh reconstruction. We also developed a 3D scanner simulator which reproduces the behaviour of our system.
