Intranet of the future: functional study, comparison of products and practical implementation

  • Bertran Ribalaygua, Ignasi
Future intranet: functional study, comparison of products and practical implementation 1. Introduction The project has fulfilled three goals: 1) To perform a study of the functionalities which have to be covered in a modern intranet (web 2.0, unified communication, collaboration, etc) 2) To perform a comparison of tools of the market which can be used to implement intranets (commercial and open source products) 3) To test three of these tools (Oracle WebCenter, Liferay Portal and Microsoft SharePoint) and develop a prototype with Oracle WebCenter. In addition, it includes a research about the evolution of the Intranets among the time, as well as a work to discover the current state of this kind of platforms over the entire world. In this introductory research it is also convenient to include other topics which are not strictly technical involving the use of this Intranet. To be more concrete, there is an analysis of the importance of the human role and management of the Intranet, the process of deploying a new Intranet in an organization and methods to evaluate the performance of this new system.   2. Functional study The approach taken to fulfil this goal is to develop a theoretical model describing the relationship between the Intranet and its users, and a complete set of functionalities which could be covered in the Intranet of the future. These functionalities are categorized in groups. The project describes these groups and the functionalities included on them. 3. Comparison of products The project will describe and compare several technologies which can be used to develop an Intranet that we have previously modelled. The purpose here is to discover the strong points and weaknesses of each technology if it was used to develop the Intranet we desire. After having done such a review, the project focuses on three technologies and performs an extensive evaluation of them. Finally, an extensive comparison between these three technologies is done, highlighting where they offer better solutions and performance compared to the other possibilities. 4. Practical implementation The project focuses on three technologies: Oracle WebCenter, Liferay Portal and Microsoft SharePoint. Then, a prototype which covers a set of functionalities of the modelled Intranet has been built with Oracle WebCenter.

Agricultural biotechnologies and the concentration trend in agrobusiness, En el mercat capitalista: agricultural biotechnologies and the concentration trend in agrobusiness

  • Sasson, Albert
De todo ello nos habla Albert Sassion de la UNESCO (Paris), The economic effects of agricultural use of technologies include not only the phenomena of concentration of the seed industry, but also the tendency towards the monopoly or oligopoly of the corporations whose business is to market the results of life science. Albert Sasson, from UNESCO, Paris, tells us all about it., Peer Reviewed

Telerehabilitation for stroke patients: an overview of reviews

  • Turolla, Andrea
Background: The increasing number of survivors following stroke events are enlightening new needs to guarantee appropriate care and quality of life support at home. A potential application of telemedicine is to provide home care and rehabilitation. Within the framework of an EU FP7 project called Integrated Home Care (IHC Grant Agreement no: 222954) we performed an overview of reviews on the telefacilities for the homecare in stroke patients. Materials and methods: A broad literature research was conducted in PUBMED, Web of Science® and The Cochrane Library databases. We included and graded all the reviews according to the following criteria: published in English in peer-reviewed journals, targeting stroke as adult patients (age>18yr.) and considering a homecare setting in the intervention. Results: 6 reviews were included (i.e. 1 systematic review with meta-analysis and 5 non-systematic reviews). No conclusions can be stated on the effectiveness of telerehabilitation compared to other home treatments, due to the insufficient data available, nevertheless strong indications emerged for the inclusion of “all cause mortality” and “hospital admission” as primary outcomes. Besides “QoL”, “cost”, “adherence” and “patient acceptability” should be included as secondary outcomes, for a complete evaluation of the tele-intervention. No adverse effects were reported in all the reviews, stating that tele-interventions appear to be safe as usual care at home. Conclusion: Those indications should be considered as relevant in planning a telerehabilitation trial, in order to observe the expected effectiveness from a multidimensional point of view in the clinical, financial and social perspectives., Peer Reviewed

O poder público municipal e o setor imobiliário: a produção e apropriação do espaço periurbano em Ribeirão Preto, São Paulo, Brasil

  • Borges, Rose Elaine Teixeira
This research paper focus on both municipal public authorities and different agents performances, especially housing sector – The Secondary Circuit of Capital -, on the production and appropriation process of geographic peripheries of Ribeirão Preto, from 1980 to 2010. The research has been undertaken based on both urban planning and public sector management analysis. It verifies the relation among the evolution of urban instruments of land´s use and occupation control, market productive agents’ actions (Grupo de Desenvolvimento Urbano – an association of Real State ventures, acquirer companies, and land owners), and, eventually the result of this interaction: the geographic periphery consolidation. To reach this goal, the paper was analyze programs, urban projects and Master Plans - by means of concepts and directives for production and urban space organization (occupation pattern, growing and urban structure guidelines), condominium and developments construction., Peer Reviewed

La sostenibilidad urbana y la agenda 21 local

  • Antequera, Josep

An Eigenvector pattern arising in non linear regression

  • Cuadras, C.M. (Carlos Maria)
Let A = (aij) be an n x n matrix defined by aij = aji = i, i = 1,...,n. This paper gives some elementary properties of A and other related matrices. The eigenstructure of A is conjectured: given an eigenvector v of A the remaining eigenvectors are obtained by permuting up to sign the components of v. This problem arises in a distance based method applied to non linear regression.

Power bias in maximum entropy spectral analysis

  • Egozcue Rubí, Juan José
  • Pagès Fita, Jaume
Several algorithms have been used in maximum entropy spectral analysis. Among them, the standard Burg procedure and the forward-backward least squares method are considered. When the autoregressive model, which is implicit in these estimation methods, is used to simulate the analyzed process, the power or variance of the simulation can differ from power estimated from the signal in several orders of magnitude. This is specially dangerous in simulated studies about the maxima of certain parameters. Burg's method, although not optimal in the least squares sense, produces autoregressive models whose estimated prediction error power is consistent with the estimated total power, while least squares method sometimes do not. Suitable corrections to power bias are described and two numerical examples clear up different situations., Peer Reviewed
