Introductory students’ attitudes and approaches to physics problem solving: major, achievement level and gender differences

Students’ attitudes and approaches to problem solving are claimed to be related to their ways they learn physics and to their success in solving physics problems. In this study, the Attitudes and Approaches to Problem Solving (AAPS) survey was used to reveal Turkish introductory university students’ attitudes and approaches to physics problem solving. The data were collected from 175 students, in the spring semester of 2015-2016 academic year, from an introductory physics course at a university in the Black See Region of Turkey. The analysis of the data was conducted by grouping the data by major, achievement level, and gender. They were no statistically significant differences between the averages of civil engineering and molecular biology majors, and between male and female students. However, we obtained a small sample correlation between students’ attitudes and exam grades that suggests high achievers’ attitudes and approaches to physics problems are more expert-like than the attitudes and approaches of low achievers. A continuum model accounting for the effect of the initial and evolving microstructure on the evolution of dynamic recrystallization

Laser assisted forming is a process which is increasingly being adopted by the industry. Application of heat by a laser to austenitic stainless steel (ASS) sheet provides local control over formability and strength of the material. The hot forming behavior of ASS is characterized by significant dynamic recovery and dynamic recrystallization. These two processes lead to a softening stress-strain response and have a significant impact on the microstructure of the material. Most of the research performed on hot forming of ASS focuses on dynamic recrystallization and then specifically on the behavior of the annealed state, consisting of relatively large equiaxed austenite grains. However, in industry it is common to use cold rolled ASS sheet which is a mixture of austenite and martensite. Application of a laser heat treatment to the cold rolled grades of ASS induces a socalled ‘reverse’ transformation of martensite to austenite which, depending on the exact time-temperature combinations, leads to an austenite grain size in the range of nanoto micrometer. It is known from experiments that the effect of initial grain size on dynamic recrystallization is significant, especially on the initial stages of recrystallization. Therefore any continuum model capable of describing hot forming of cold rolled ASS should include the effect of the initial grain size. In this work a physically based continuum model for dynamic recrystallization is presented which accounts for the effect of the initial and evolving grain size on the evolution of dynamic recrystallization. It is shown that the initial grain size can be accounted for by incorporating its effect on the availability of preferred nucleation sites, i.e. grain edges. The new model is compared to experimental results and it is shown that the model correctly predicts accelerated recrystallization with decrease in grain size and that there is a weak dependence of the dynamically recrystallized grain size on the initial grain size. Furthermore predicted recrystallized grain sizes are in good agreement with the experimentally measured values.

En el presente artículo se revisan las recientes concesiones de la explotación de redes viales de bajo volumen de tráfico por parte de Diputaciones provinciales españolas. Se introducen, primeramente, los riesgos e ineficiencias asociados a las colaboraciones público-privadas. Seguidamente se presentan las características de las concesiones evaluadas, haciendo hincapié en los mecanismos de control de riesgos e ineficiencias y en las garantías de calidad del servicio. Este trabajo presenta una nueva plataforma de interacción de usuarios con discapacidad con los juegos de las principales videoconsolas comerciales. El sistema diseñado habilita el acceso a las diferentes plataformas existentes en el mercado (Xbox 360, PS3, Wii y PC) y a cualquier juego, a personas que antes no podían plantearse jugar, mejorando sus perspectivas de ocio. El usuario no tiene que aprender a utilizar un nuevo dispositivo específico, sino que podrá seguir utilizando los ratones o joysticks adaptados que normalmente usa para acceder al ordenador o para controlar el entorno. Además, el sistema admite el uso añadido de mandos que puedan accionarse con diferentes partes del cuerpo, así como la selección de acciones mediante pulsación o barrido. La adaptación de los mandos y joysticks se ve complementada con el diseño de software personalizable para cada usuario y juego. Éste permite la implementación de macros para asignar una serie de combinaciones o secuencias de teclas a los botones de los controladores de entrada, facilitando el acceso a las acciones más complicadas de los videojuegos. El resultado es un dispositivo para que las personas con discapacidad puedan disfrutar solas o con sus amigos de los videojuegos más actuales del mercado.

Proposal for using NLP interchange format for question answering in organizations

The growth of technology and sciences has greatly influenced the area of management and decision-making procedures, and has dramatically changed the decision-making processes in different levels, both quantitatively and qualitatively. Knowledge management plays a vital role in supporting enterprise learning, since it facilitates the effective collective intellect of the enterprise. Different methods for user-friendly knowledge access have been developed previously. The most sophisticated ones provide a simple text box for a query which takes Natural Language (NL) queries as input. Question Answering (QA) system is playing an important role in current search engine optimization. Natural language processing technique is mostly implemented in QA system for asking user's question and several steps are also followed for conversion of questions to query form for getting an exact answer. Query languages have complex syntax, requiring a good understanding of the representation schema, including knowledge of details like namespaces, class and property names. Requirements reuse and patterns: a survey

Context and motivation: Multiple proposals exist that propose the adoption of reuse practices during requirements engineering processes. Question/problem: Which is the current level of adoption of these practices in organizations? Principal ideas/results: In this paper we present the preliminary results of a survey initiated at REFSQ’13 that addresses this question. The survey first investigates requirements reuse in general, and then goes in depth asking about a specific technique, software requirement patterns (SRP), which is the backbone of our PABRE framework. Contribution: The survey results show that requirements reuse is not a widespread practice in IT projects, being the most common techniques those based on the copy and later modification by hand of requirements coming from previous projects. Regarding the use of SRP, the results seem to support our hypothesis that SRP could help to ameliorate some common problems related to requirements specifications like lack of uniformity and incompleteness., Peer Reviewed
