Camera-based method for respiratory rhythm extraction from a lateral perspective

This work proposes a new method based on computer vision algorithms to measure the respiratory rhythm of a subject from a lateral perspective. The proposed algorithm consists on tracking the motion of the intercostal and abdominal muscles by the means of dense optical flow, being the novelty of the proposed method the extraction of the respiratory signal from the phase of the optical flow, while extracting at the same time a quality index from the modulus. 15 healthy subjects were measured while seating, and 4 tests were performed for each subject involving different scenarios. The algorithm has been validated using a commercial wearable thorax inductive plethysmograph system. The instantaneous frequency for the constant frequency respiratory tests, and the breath to breath analysis and instantaneous frequency of the free breathing test have been computed to assess the performance and error of the proposed method for the respiratory acquisition. Finally, a statistical analysis has been performed to assess the accuracy and performance of the quality index. The results of the study show a high agreement between methods in the 0.1 Hz and 0.3 Hz test. For the Free breathing test, both the cycle by cycle and Instantaneous frequency results show a low error between methods with high sensitivity in the cycle detection. The hypothesis that the modulus of the optical flow could be used as a quality index has been corroborated, with very good statistical results. Moreover, due to the simplicity of the proposed algorithm, the proposed method can perform in real-time while measuring respiratory rhythm and assessing the quality of the acquired signal. Estudio, diseño y fabricación de un lector NFC en ropa

En este proyecto de investigación, se han diseñado y simulado dos antenas RFID, que funcionan con chips diferentes y que resuenan a una frecuencia de 13.56 MHz, que es la frecuencia utilizada para la tecnología NFC. Actualmente, encontramos este tipo de tecnología en tarjetas de crédito, llaves y etiquetas de ropa, que nos ayudan en nuestra vida cuotidiana. Concretamente, este tipo de antenas en ropa y en la propia piel humana se están empezando a investigar, por lo que su cantidad en el mercado es reducida. Una vez hecho el diseño de las antenas, se ha procedido a realizar sus respectivas simulaciones con el software ADS de Keysight Technologies y se han mostrado los resultados de las antenas con ambos chips. Con los resultados obtenidos, en trabajos futuros, se implementará la antena diseñada con mejores resultados en un tejano y se realizarán las medidas oportunas para asegurar que no perjudica ni al ser humano y ni al medio ambiente.

Study for the computational resolution of conservation equations of mass, momentum and energy. Application to wall-bounded turbulent flows

This thesis for the obtention of Bachelor’s degree in Aerospace Vehicle Engineeringconsists of the study of the Navier-Stokes equations under certain hypotheses, being the most remarkable one the incompressibility of the flow.The numerical resolution of the equations is performed. To do so, the Finite VolumeMethod (FVM) is employed and different numerical techniques are contemplated and studied. Special attention regarding discretisation procedures is paid in the explanation of such techniques.To perform the numerical resolution of the equations, a code written in C++ from scratch is developed. This code includes a mesher of structured non-uniform grids and enough flexibility to simulate different cases with diverse boundary conditions.From what concerns to the cases studied, two main blocks are presented: laminar and turbulent. Driven Cavity, Differentially Heated Cavity and Square Cylinder arethe cases within laminar regime. Decay of Homogeneous Isotropic Turbulence and Channel Flow are the cases solved considering turbulent regime. For both cases,Smagorinsky’s turbulence model is employed, and for the latter wall-modelling is included.The data generated by the software is compared with existent literature and analysed, highlighting the most important concepts regarding each problem and its particularities.

Position analysis of a class of n-RRR planar parallel robots

The final publication is available at link.springer.com, Parallel robots with a configurable platform are a class of parallel robots in which the end-effector is a closed-loop kinematic chain. In n-RRR planar robots the end-effector is a n-bar chain controlled by 'n' actuated RRR chains connected to the base. We solve the direct kinematic problem for 4, 5 and 6-RRR mechanisms by using bilateration, a method that easily lends itself to generalization. Finally, we present the results from experimental tests that have been performed on a 5-RRR prototype., Peer Reviewed

L'estàndard Passivhaus al clima mediterrani: estudi de casos d’habitatges unifamiliars a Catalunya

El treball s'estructura en quatre blocs: el primer és una introducció a l'arquitectura passiva, passant primer per l'arquitectura vernacular i explicant l'actual normativa europea i espanyola que consideren el tema d'estalvi d'energia en l'edificació. El segon bloc es basa en explicar què és, com funciona i quins són els principis bàsics de l'estàndard Passivhaus. Seguidament es fa l'estudi de diferents casos d'edificis seguint el model Passivhaus a Catalunya, per tal de poder extreure'n unes conclusions que responguin a la hipòtesi plantejada. Finalment, aquesta informació es resumida gràficament.

Aquest projecte dissenya un curs de matemàtiques usant els diferents recursos de Moodle. Els temes que es tracten en el curs corresponen bàsicament a les assignatures de Càlcul i Matemàtiques de diferents titulacions a diversos centres de la UPC, concretament l’E.T.S. d’Enginyers de Camins, Canals i Ports, la Facultat de Matemàtiques i Estadística i l’E.U. d’Enginyeria Tècnica Agrícola de Barcelona. Moodle és un sistema per la creació de cursos i llocs web basats en Internet. Es tracta d’un projecte en desenvolupament i millora permanent per donar suport a un marc d’educació basat en el constructivisme social (col•laboració, activitats, reflexió crítica, etc). És un tipus de recurs fonamental per a una docència semipresencial i que sintonitzi amb les directrius de l’Espai Europeu d’Educació Superior. Per al disseny del curs i la seva experimentació en un curs pilot s’ha definit un grup de treball que aglutina: Professors de matemàtiques amb llarga experiència en la docència de les assignatures de Càlcul, estudiants de diferents titulacions, experts en el disseny d’activitats interactives de matemàtiques, de l’empresa Maths for More. Aquest grup o molts dels seus components ja han col•laborat anteriorment en els desenvolupament dels projectes, destaquem el projecte EVAM (http://wiris.upc.es/EVAM) i BasicMatWeb (http://wiris.upc.es/basicmatweb).

Tool for the identification and assessment of Environmental Aspects in Ports (TEAP)

A new tool to assist port authorities in identifying aspects and in assessing their significance (TEAP) has been developed. The present research demonstrates that although there is a high percentage of European ports that have already identified their Significant Environmental Aspects (SEA), most of these ports do not use any standardized method. This suggests that some of the procedures used may not necessarily be science-based, systematic in approach or appropriate for the purpose of implementing effective environmental management. For the port sector as a whole, where the free-exchange of environmental information and experience is an established policy of the European Sea Ports Organization's (ESPO) and the EcoPorts Network, developing a tool to assist ports in identifying SEAs can be very useful. This method has been developed in the framework of the PERSEUS research project, after analysing the strengths, weaknesses and challenges of the existing techniques, the recommendations from the Environmental Management System (EMS) standards and the advice of specialists. This is a computer-based tool (www.eports.cat) that provides a quick calculation and result, and it is designed to be as user-friendly as possible in order to facilitate its completion by the user (i.e. port environmental manager). This methodology comprises two main steps, firstly the identification of the major environmental aspects that may be generated in a port, and secondly, assessing their significance. Piezoelectric energy harvesting system for volcanic seismic acquisition equipment

In this paper it is presented a volcanic seismic acquisition equipment that has been developed together with an energy harvesting system, based on piezoelectrics elements, in order to work in autonomous conditions. The energy harvesting system it has been developed to convert the wind or marine currents energy into electrical energy through a new method based on piezoelectrics. For the deployment of the volcanic seismic acquisition equipment in marine environments, this power generator produces energy obtained from harnessing of the kinetic energy of marine currents. The first results have shown that the system it is capable to provide a small amount of energy that can be used to extend the deployment time of the volcanic seismic acquisition equipment., Peer Reviewed
