The hypnosis of screens: reflections on a possible awakening of televiewer

  • García, Aurelio
TV viewers suffer very often a psychical surrender in front the screens. This is a way of defencelessness against different levels of reality and veracity of TV contents. The mental attitude of viewer is a learning process usually hidden by appearance of naturalness of quotidian television device presence. But TV language is not natural, but rather a complicate system of message structures built in clearly intentional purpose. Human mind develops his learning process, that configures a life meaning, under very important psychical pressure. In which stage or step of this process the viewer mind configuration begins? Can we modify such configuration improving a critical judgement in front of television messages? All these questions move us to the most basic initial learning in childhood and adolescence periods inspiring searching works about the possible awakening of TV viewer intelligence through active technical training: we need unmasking the trick showing how television makes new realities or visions in which sometimes is difficult discriminate between truth and point of view.

Intervention against cyberbullying and other risks associated with the misuse of ITC and social networks is an important social demand. The «Asegúrate» Program tries to support teachers in this intervention. This research shows the impact of the program among those that have shown to be less sensitive to other ones: cyber-aggressors. Concretely, the impact of the program on the prevalence of aggression in cyberbullying and bullying, sexting and abusive use of the Internet and social networks are analyzed. The evaluation of the program was carried out with a sample of 479 students (54.9% girls) of Compulsory Secondary Education (age M=13.83. SD=1.40) through a quasi-experimental methodology, with two measures over time. The instruments used were the “European Cyberbullying Intervention Project Questionnaire”, the “European Bullying Intervention Project Questionnaire”, the ”Internet Related Experiences Questionnaire” and two items about sexting involvement. The results show that the involvement in cyber aggression, sexting, and intrapersonal dimension of abusive use of Internet and social network increases without intervention, whereas it diminishes when the intervention is carried out. Moreover, a significant decrease in the aggression and cyber aggression among cyber aggressors is evidenced. Thus, “Asegúrate” Program is effective for decreasing the prevalence of aggressions and cyber aggressions as well as the involvement in other phenomena considered cyberbullying risk factors.

An empirical expression for loss factor

Noise transmitted by the sidewalls of buildings is essential to study the overall airborne sound insulation. For the determination of the lateral transmissions we must determine a parameter known as vibration reduction index. To obtain the value of the vibration reduction index to know the acoustic behaviour of the whole constructive, it is necessary to know the velocity level difference and the structural reverberation time. The indeterminations in the velocity level difference, or in the structural reverberation time will add diversions in the global determination of the isolation of the whole constructive. In the Standard UNE EN 12354-1:2000 there are empirical expressions for obtained the structural reverberation time. In the Standard UNE-EN ISO 10848-1:2007 there is a detailed procedure to determine experimentally the velocity level difference and the structural reverberation time, and to know the sidewalls transmissions. In this work, it is compared the structural reverberation time obtained by empirical expression and the structural reverberation time obtained experimentally, applying the normalized procedure. Based on this comparison we readjusted the empirical equations with a fundamental parameter, the loss factor. It is observed that the estimates do not reflect reality if we consider the same loss factor for all the structural elements, as it is allowed in the predictions of UNE EN 12354.

The ConRed Program, an Evidence-based Practice

The incredible force with which ITCs have arrived in society and the consequent risks to children when dealing with the Internet and social networks make it necessary for the domain of virtual environments to be included in the school curriculum. However, the initiatives in this direction are limited and there is a lack of rigorously evaluated programs that might act as a basis for designing educational lines of action. The ConRed Program is based on the theory of normative social behavior and aims to reduce problems such as cyber-bullying and addiction to the Internet and refocus the misadjusted perception of information control in the social networks in order to promote their use in a more beneficial way. The ConRed Program has been evaluated using a quasi-experimental methodology, with an experimental group (N=595) and a quasi-control group (N=298) consisting of 893 students (45.9% girls) with an average age of 13.80 years (SD=1.47). The reduction of problems in the experimental group and the lack of change in the control group is evidence of the program’s validity, and show that by working and collaborating with the whole educational community it is possible to improve the quality of the virtual and, therefore, the real life of adolescents.

Calderón's Sacramental Play as the Transition from No-time to Virtual Time

  • Parra, Elena
This essay propose that today's «virtual time", a concept much written about in this era of techno(i)logical communication, is recognizable in Calderón de la Barca's sacramental plays written over three centuries ago, because they revolve around a-dimensional time, not eternity.

Reality construction by Spanish infancy across TV consumption

This paper presents the preliminary exposition and results of a feasibility project for an Observatory of Consumption of Infantile Television that contributes with indexes of evolutionary impact (developmental ratings) of diverse contents, taking part in the television diet of Spanish children. The model of analysis has developed indicators about 7 evolutionary dimensions relative to the imagery representation and to the orientation in the symbolic reality. This model has been applied in a pilot stage to a limited but significant sample (the 10 and the 30 most seen programs by 4, 7, and 12-year-old Spanish children), as well as to the most seen advertising. The provisional results allow us to establish certain features of the situation of the audio-visual diet and the orientation of the imagery representation.

Value analysis and audiovisual production quality

  • Suárez, Juan
If we attend to the way TV programmes are designed, produced and broadcasted, we realize that their design, in many cases, is intended not to the neccessities and expectations of those to whom is aimed, namely, the televison viewers, but to the artistic taste of the proprer designer. In addition, we suspect that, too often, the transition from the Idea to the Product is carried out intuitively and without any methodology. If motor industry designed cars and sold them in the same manner we do TV programmes, it would fall into a deep crisis a long time ago. In general terms, any industry can afford to design its products by the trial and error method; far from it, they start from the study of the neccessities of potential customers in order to reach, by a logical proccess, the final design. In the audiovisual industry, the product is designed, more often than recommendable, before it is known to whom it will be sold, what time it will be broadcasted, which is the viewer sociodemographic profile and what he or she expects from TV. Applying Value Analysis techniques, which are well-established industrywide, would help to recover from this rift between viewers and designers, and to achieve the ideal balance between the customer neccessities and expectations and the TV programme conceptual design, as well as all the production factors. This way, it would guarantee at the same time the two aspects of quality: Conformity Quality and Design Quality.

Considering the results of studies on the mediating role of the media, specially the television, and the advertising in different groups etarios, added to the need to discuss the processes of audio-visual literacy or media literacy; the principal aim of this work was analyzed the pattern of consumption of media in students of pedagogy in Language and Communication, Mathematics, and History and Geography of Chilean universities and to determine if differential profiles exist in the use and consumption of media that you relate to his future role in the audio-visual literacy of his students. For it, it was considered to be a sample of meaningful type remained constituted by 881 students of pedagogy of both sexes who were dealing studies in seven Chilean universities of the south and central zone of Chile. For the compilation of information there was in use the «questionnaire of habits of consumption of media». In general, the distribution of the preferences, so much to level of kind as for career, does not manage to represent mediatically the idiosyncrasy and reflects foreign realities that do not allow to strengthen civil processes in the consumers of the media. In synthesis, the major problematics is that the educational futures do not seem to rely on tools that they should allow them to face the labor of audio-visual literacy, provided that they themselves present difficulties to differ between the information and the persuasion in the advertising messages.

Spanish Mystic Women of the Golden Century within the Ottoman Empire: Seven Arabic Manuscripts Found in Aleppo (Syria)

  • Sánchez, Francisco
This work reports on the existence of seven manuscripts conserved in three different collections of Aleppo (Syria): the Greek-Catholic/Melkite, the Georges and Mathilde Salem Foundation and the Maronite libraries. These seven copies contain the Arabic translations of some mystical works written by two mystic women of the Spanish Golden Century, Teresa de Ávila and María de Ágreda. The history of these Arabic versions, translated right in the heart of the Ottoman Arabic provinces, constitutes an interesting object of study that is directly linked with the manner in which many  European Western works passed to the Mediterranean Levant during the 16th and 17th centuries.
