Extending the phase of stem elongation (SE) has been proposed as a tool to further improve yield potential in small-grain cereals. The genetic control of pre-heading phases may also contribute to a better understanding of phenological traits conferring adaptability. Given that an optimized total time to heading is one of the most important traits in a breeding program, a prerequisite for lengthening SE would be that this and the previous phase (leaf and spikelet initiation, LS) should be under different genetic control. We studied the genetic control of these two pre-heading sub-phases (from sowing to the onset of stem elongation, LS, and from then to heading, SE) in terms of Quantitative Trait Loci (QTL) in a barley double-haploid population derived from the cross Henni × Meltan, both two-rowed spring North European barley cultivars. DH lines (118) and their parents were studied in four field trials in North-Eastern Spain. Genetic control of a number of traits related to leaf appearance and tillering dynamics, which could be important for an early crop canopy structure, were also studied. LS and SE are, at least partially, under a different genetic control in the Henni × Meltan population, mainly due to a QTL on chromosome 2HS. The QTLs responsible for a different control of LS and SE did not seem to correspond with any major gene reported in the literature. Moreover shortening LS, so as to lengthen SE without modifying heading date, would not necessarily imply a negative drawback on traits that could be important for early vigour, such as phyllochron and the onset of tillering.

Floret development of durum wheat in response to nitrogen availability

In Mediterranean durum wheat production, nitrogen (N) fertilization may be important to stabilize and increase yields. Wheat yield responses to N fertilization are usually related to grains per m2, which in turn is the consequence of processes related to floret development (floret initiation followed by floret death/survival) during stem elongation. The literature is rather scarce in terms of the relevance of floret developmental dynamics, determining the final number of grains in general terms and in particular regarding responsiveness to N. The aim of this study was to determine whether durum wheat responses to N under different water regimes are related to the dynamics of development of floret primordia to produce fertile florets. During the 2006–2007 and 2007–2008 growing seasons, experiments with a factorial combination of two N levels (0 and 100 or 250 kg N ha21) and two levels of water availability (rainfed and irrigated) were carried out (although the water regime was only effective in the second season). The response of yield was largely a consequence of that in grain number per spike. Floret initiation was similar for both N levels in each experiment and water regime, for which the survival of a higher proportion of initiated florets was critical in the response of the crop. The diminished rate of floret abortion during the late part of stem elongation in response to N was associated with a slightly accelerated rate of floret development which allowed a higher proportion of the primordia initiated to reach the stage of fertile floret by flowering.

Helicobacter pylory (HP) infection has been associated to an increased rate of type 2 diabetes (T2D) and liver disease through its effect on insulin resistance and systemic inflammation. However, results are inconstant and no studies exist in morbidly obese patients, in which both insulin resistance and inflammation coexist.

Dating agricultural terraces is a notoriously difficult problem for archaeologists. The frequent occurrence of residual material in terrace soils and the potential for post-depositional disturbance mean that conventional artefactual and lab-based dating methods often provide unreliable dates. In this paper we present a new technique using luminescence field profiling coupled with OSL dating to produce complete (relative) sequences of dates for sedimentary stratigraphies associated with agricultural terraces and earthworks. The method is demonstrated through a series of case-studies in western Catalonia, Spain, in which we reconstruct the formation sequence of earthwork features from the Middle Ages through to the present day. OSL profiling at the time of archaeological survey and excavation permitted spatially and temporally resolved sediment ‘chronologies’ to be generated, and provides the means to interpret the environmental and cultural archives contained in each. The case-studies presented here show that luminescence approaches are a valuable tool to reconstruct landscape histories.

Here we studied non-edible fat waste as a starting material to prepare eutectic mixtures of biomaterials. Initially, the fat was hydrolyzed using water and R. oryzae resting cells. The hydrolysis was performed in organic solvent-free media and the degree of hydrolysis at 1 h was 42% while hydrolytic values of 86% and 98% were achieved at 12 and 48 h, respectively. To recover the resting cells, they were extracted in consecutive cycles with solvents or supercritical CO2. Compared with solvents, supercritical CO2 allowed the highest reuse. Hence, R. oryzae was used for 336 h (7 reaction cycles), yielding 56.5 g of free fatty acid/g biocatalyst. Crude glycerol was recovered, showing a purity of 66.0% and an ash and water content of 2.3% and 1.8%, respectively. The hydrolyzed fat was crystallized with several solvents to yield palmitic and stearic acid mixtures with melting point characteristics of eutectic mixtures. We recovered 76% to 90% of the palmitic and stearic acids present in the initial hydrolyzed animal fat, depending on the solvent. The palmitic:stearic acid ratios determined by GC-FID were similar to those reported for eutectic mixtures whit phase change materials properties, as were the melting points, which ranged from 51.5 °C to 54.8 °C.
