Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a major public health problem that, in its different stages, may affect up to 10% of the Spanish population and results in high morbidity and mortality, as well as high consumption of National Health System resources. Ten scientific societies involved in the management of kidney patients agreed to update the 2007 CKD consensus document. The current version is an abridged edition of the detailed general document, which can be consulted on the webpages of each signatory society. It includes the following aspects: CKD definition, epidemiology and risk factors and criteria on diagnosis, assessment and staging of CKD, albuminuria and glomerular filtration estimation. Progression factors and concept. Criteria for referral to Nephrology. Patient follow-up, attitudes and objectives by specialty. Prevention of nephrotoxicity. Detection of cardiovascular damage. Attitudes, lifestyle and treatment: management of high blood pressure, dyslipidaemia, hyperglycaemia, smoking, obesity, hyperuricaemia, anaemia and mineral and bone metabolism disorders. Coordinated follow-up by Primary Care - other specialties - Nephrology. Management of renal replacement therapy, haemodialysis, peritoneal dialysis and renal transplantation patients. Palliative treatment of terminal uraemia. We hope that this document will be very useful in the multidisciplinary management of CKD patients, in view of the updated recommendations.

Children left behind during immigration: psychological symptoms for Latin-American mothers and fathers

  • Kirchner, Teresa
  • Patiño, Camila
  • Forns, Maria, 1946-
Emigrating and having to leave children behind may be a risk factor for the mental health of immigrants. This study aimed to compare the psychological symptoms reported by immigrant mothers and fathers who took their children with them with those who left their children behind. The sample comprised 213 Latin American immigrants (123 women and 90 men). The results showed that mothers who did not have their children with them reported more psychological symptoms than those who did. Few differences were observed in the case of fathers, except that those who had their children with them reported more symptoms related with somatization. After controlling for possible confounding variables ('time since immigration', 'having a job', 'legal status' and 'social support') it is concluded that for mothers not being accompanied by one's children explains the largest proportion of the psychological symptoms analyzed, although the time since immigration also accounts for some of the variance in the case of depressive symptomatology and general distress. It is likely that the despair and frustration felt by mothers grows as time goes on and they remain unable to reunite the family. These results may be useful in terms of designing prevention and intervention programs with immigrant mothers.

Internet has been growing intensely for the last years. In its origins, Internet was a community with informal structures of reinforcement of merits. Its functioning was regulated by few norms. Today, economic practices of the whole society are operating in Internet too. Anarchy and self-organization disappear and are replaced by control. Internet is changing every human activity: work, personal, familiar. Generalized use of hypertexts and hypermedia affects the way knowledge is structured too. Psychologists are very interested in all of those developments and influences. Tkeir own way of work and investigate are influenced by those technological developments.

We studied the functional diversity of silence in a communicative situation involving children. We were especially interested in the types of silence that are expressions of reflection or inner speech. We designed a longitudinal study with ten pairs of children aged 4;6, 6;6 and 8;6 years participating in a referential communication task under the supervision of an adult. We distinguished between different verbal and non-verbal categories: among the most relevant were mes-sages with silences in the formulation, messages with audible elements of reflection or private speech, and triad silences. The study demonstrated a tendency, at the developmental level, to internalize the audible elements of reflection that appear in the messages, as well as a connection between the presence of messages with silence and the capacity to modify the information at 8;6 years of age. In addition, there was a decrease in the triad silences and categories that express parallel adult guidance, and finally an increase in children's interventions. In conclusion we suggest that the relationship between silence as a marker of reflection and the processes of communicative control becomes increasingly profound.

  • Serrat Sellabona, Elisabet
  • Sanz-Torrent, Mònica
  • Bel, Aurora
This paper studies the initial development of certain language components. More precisely, we analyse the relation between three aspects that are closely involved in the grammar of the verb: morphological productivity, syntactic complexity, and verb vocabulary learning. The study is based on data about the relationship between lexical development and grammatical development, and also on proposals that a critical mass of vocabulary is needed in order to develop a grammatical component. The sample comprised six subjects who are monolingual or bilingual in Catalan and/or Spanish. Results show a morphological spurt some time after the learning of a certain quantity of verbs. Moreover, syntactic complexity is only evident some months after this morphological spurt.

  • Forns, Maria, 1946-
This study measures and describes characteristics of adolescents' psychological functioning which, at more intense levels, may become developmental or psychopatological disorders. The Millon Adolescent Clinical Inventory (MACI; Millon, 1993) was administered to a group of 561 Chilean adolescents, from 14 to 18 years old, non-consulting and with normal school attainment. In this group, increased scores on the MACI scales identified 150 at-risk adolescents who dis not present evident emotional or behavioral problems. In this group the score's clinical significance were assessed by means of a cluster analysis that found three types of profiles on the basis of the MACI scores.
