Proposta de traducció de la veu narrativa de la novel·la A Girl is a Half-formed Thing, d’Eimear McBride

Tutor: Damià Alou., This paper aims to provide a Catalan translation for the narrative voice of the main character in A Girl is a Half-formed Thing, the debut novel of the Irish author Eimear McBride. Since this work landed in the English literary scene as a revelation, and it has been translated into Italian and French too, it seemed interesting to bring this novel and its fragmented prose into Catalan Language. The language used by the narrator is a subversion of English aimed to reflect the unformed subjectivity of the Girl and the instant generation of thoughts. The discourse is therefore is half-formed, as it is the character. To find an equivalent way of expression that preserves the particularities of the style and the emotional weight of each word, this paper covers some theory about literary translation (and specially about the problems that may arise when facing a literary text) and also a great range of reviews and studies about the novel. This background makes possible the translation of twelve fragments of the book, and it makes it easier to translate both form and meaning (always together in this case). The task is complex because of the limited flexibility of the Catalan language. However, these translations may help to find and validate other ways of expression beyond the norm for literary purposes.

Lolita de Vladímir Nabókov: anàlisi de les dues interpretacions cinematogràfiques

Tutor: Damià Alou., Vladimir Nabokov was a Russian-American writer from the second half of the 20th century, most famous for his novel Lolita, and admired for his lyrical descriptions, experimental style and well-thought out plots. Stanley Kubrick, in 1962, and Adrian Lyne, in 1997, brought the novel to life in two cinematographic adaptations with a very dissimilar vision. The purpose behind this study is to, first of all, determine in which way they have portrayed the main structural points of the novel and how this shapes the main characters’ personalities. Second of all, it aims to expose the motivation and intentions that caused the directors to make executive decisions about different aspects of their adaptations. This essay is based on the results extracted from extensive research into the work and style of the author and two directors, along with an exhaustive study of Nabokov’s Lolita and the cinematographic adaptations. Having completed this study, the results proved that the director’s vision alters the final product: Kubrick’s adaptation accentuates Nabokov’s humour, leaving behind the psychology behind it, while Lyne focuses on maintaining the original structure, but chooses to victimize his version of Humbert and sexualize the female characters. Overall it becomes apparent that the authors procured three different versions of Lolita.

Bilingüisme i interpretació

There is little literature about this topic and, mostly, it focuses on proving how these two fields may be related, using tests about linguistic and interpretative competences in bilingual and monolingual speakers. Taking this into account, the main goal of this project is to delve into bilingualism and interpreting analysing whether a speaker’s type of bilingualism can influence the interpreting performance. Aiming to understand bilingualism, our research focuses on its advantages and drawbacks. We go on to further providing a classification of types of bilingualism, establishing a link between bilingualism types and interpreting techniques. In order to meet our research goals, a survey was carried out among professional interpreters looking for specific patterns in their linguistic competences. However, information obtained is limited and, therefore, no general conclusions can be drawn. With a greater sample size and applying further tests analysing the subjects’ linguistic and interpretative competences, some determinant results could be obtained. In any case, the project goals have been attained, as it has been possible to make headway in a new area of academic study relating bilingualism and (professional) interpreting., No són gaires els estudis realitzats sobre bilingüisme i interpretació. Els pocs que s’han dut a terme s’han centrat en demostrar si existeix algun tipus de relació entre ambdues pràctiques a través de proves de competències lingüístiques i interpretatives a individus bilingües i monolingües. És per això que l’interès d’aquest treball és aprofundir en aquest tema i esbrinar si el tipus de bilingüisme d’una persona incideix en el seu treball com a intèrpret. L’estudi se centra en els avantatges i inconvenients del bilingüisme per tal d’entendre clarament aquesta capacitat. A més a més, s’estableix una classificació amb diversos tipus de bilingüisme i es relaciona amb les diferents tècniques d’interpretació. Per tal d’abordar l’objectiu de l’estudi, s’ha realitzat una enquesta a intèrprets professionals amb el propòsit d’esbrinar si existeix alguna tendència basada en les capacitats lingüístiques dels participants. Les dades utilitzades, però, són limitades i, per tant, no es pot fer una generalització sobre aquest tema. Amb un major nombre d’enquestats i l’ajuda de proves que comprovessin les capacitats lingüístiques i interpretatives dels participants, es podria arribar a resultats més decisius. Tot i això, s’han assolit els objectius del treball i s’ha aconseguit aprofundir en un camp amb molt de potencial, el qual tracta la influència del bilingüisme en el treball dels intèrprets professionals.

El español como lengua extranjera en EE.UU.: análisis de las pruebas oficiales de evaluación de nivel B1

Tutora: Carmen López Ferrero., During the last years, Spanish has been climbing back to the top until being the second most spoken language in the United States. This has caused the level’s certification to mark the difference when applying for a prestigious university or for a well-paid job. The aim of this paper is to analyze two official language exams for the B1 level, called DELE and SIELE, alongside the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR) and the Curricular Program of the Instituto Cervantes (CPIC). We are only going to spell out the writing skills, which are reading and writing, for functionality reasons. There is also going to be a section dedicated to examining a textbook recommended by the Instituto Cervantes and that it is used for the DELE B1 exam preparation. This book is going to be studied based on its curriculum, which has a functional-notional approach, and on what a good textbook should include and be structured like. Finally, we bring together the point of view of some American students about their thoughts on these two exams using an anonymous survey, where we ask them to solve two reading exercises and comment on which one is more difficult and why. This analysis has allowed us to realize that the DELE exam is more recognized by the students and is likewise to be more complete and faithful to the CEFR and the CPIC., Durante los últimos años el español ha ido ganando popularidad en Estado Unidos hasta conseguir ser la segunda lengua más hablada del país. Este hecho ha provocado que certificar el dominio de un idioma marque la diferencia a la hora de opositar para un puesto de trabajo o para una plaza en una universidad reconocida. El objetivo de este trabajo es analizar dos exámenes oficiales de español del nivel B1, el DELE y el SIELE, junto al Marco Común Europeo de Referencia (MCER) y el Plan Curricular del Instituto Cervantes (PCIC). Por motivos funcionales, en este trabajo solo analizaremos las destrezas escritas, esto es, la comprensión de lectura y la expresión e interacción escritas. Además, hay un apartado dedicado al estudio de un libro de texto recomendado por el Instituto Cervantes y que se utiliza para la preparación del examen DELE B1. Este libro va a ser examinado a partir de su currículum, el cual tiene un enfoque nocional-funcional. Finalmente, recogeremos el punto de vista de algunos alumnos norteamericanos sobre estas dos pruebas oficiales mediante una encuesta anónima. En esta encuesta les pedimos a los estudiantes que resuelvan dos ejercicios de comprensión de lectura y que detallen cuál de ellos es más complejo y por qué. Este estudio nos ha permitido observar que el DELE es más popular entre los estudiantes encuestados, y resulta más completo y más fiel al MCER y al PCIC.

Traducció de la pel·lícula El Rei Lleó de Disney per al doblatge (anglès-català)

Tutora: Paula Igareda González., This end of degree project is about translating the full movie The Lion King (Rob Minkoff and Roger Allers, 1994) from English into Catalan, and analyzing the result by going through the important points of translation for dubbing, including the songs that are in English in their original version. There is a previous review of the theoretical aspects that take part in this form of translation, followed by the analysis of the result, song by song and of some of the difficulties of the dialogue and, as an annex, the translation to Catalan of both the script and the lyrics. It also includes a brief description of the main characters, as it’s one of the characteristics that have taken an important role in the decision-taking of the translation. The aim of this piece of work is to have a high-quality translation that sounds genuine in the target language and to make a self-evaluation of the final solution. This result product wants to cover all the aspects of dubbing so that it could be used by a television network to produce the real dubbing, what means that it has to solve all the translation problems and difficulties. This is why there is a posterior analysis of the decisions and the procedure. All in all, this analysis is not only critical and self-evaluative, but it’s an explanation of the steps that have been followed and wants to capture the complexity of this process., Aquest treball consisteix en la traducció de la pel·lícula El Rei Lleó (anglès-català) i l’anàlisi del resultat tenint en compte els aspectes més importants de la traducció per al doblatge, incloses les cançons que estan en anglès en la versió original. En primer lloc, es fa un repàs dels aspectes teòrics que intervenen en aquesta modalitat de traducció i, en segon lloc, es fa l’anàlisi del resultat, de cada cançó i d’algunes de les dificultats del guió i, com a annex, s’hi troba la traducció al català del guió i les lletres de les cançons. També inclou una breu descripció de la manera de parlar de cadascun dels personatges principals, ja que ha sigut un factor que s’ha tingut molt en compte en el moment de prendre decisions pel que fa a la traducció. L’objectiu és obtenir una traducció de qualitat que sigui genuïna en la llengua meta i fer-ne una autoavaluació del resultat final. Aquest resultat final té l’objectiu de cobrir tots els aspectes del doblatge, de manera que podria ser usat per una cadena de televisió i dur a terme un doblatge real, cosa que requereix la solució dels problemes i dificultats de traducció. Per aquest motiu es fa una posterior anàlisi de les decisions que s’han pres i del procediment. Amb tot, aquesta anàlisi no és només crític i autoavaluatiu, sinó que pretén explicar les passes que s’han seguit i vol plasmar la complexitat d’aquest procés.

Traducció comentada: Black Mirror al català

Tutor: Joan Josep Mussarra Roca., This work is a translation of two episodes of Black Mirror (the 1x02 and the 2x01), a fantastic series created by Charlie Brooker. The series has been translated into Spanish but never into Catalan, so this very first version. One of the main objectives of this translation is to reproduce the colloquial language of the original version and make it sound natural. In addition to the translation of two scripts, it includes an analysis of the decisions made during the translation, when the proposals of the Catalan audio-visual language regulatory body (CCMA) have been followed and when it has been decided to use a transgressive language that is appropriate to the context. The process is based on the perception that English is a freer language when using pretend orality than in the case of Catalan and also, on the decisions that the translator must make in order to reproduce spontaneity. The greatest difficulty is to find the balance between what sounds natural and what is part of the normative framework, and for this purpose it is vital to understand the linguistic context of translation. It is to show that the series in Catalan can sound natural, not only those originally in Catalan, but that it is also possible to achieve this when it comes to translation.

Traducción y análisis de una obra literaria: memorial Device y la escena post-punk en la Escocia de los años 80

Tutor: Joan Josep Mussarra Roca., David Keenan is a Scottish critic, writer and musician whose debut novel, This Is Memorial Device, was greatly acclaimed and well received. He lived the experience it was to be young in Scotland and living in a peripheral town, he saw how post punk energised people and hoped to keep the feeling alive through his book. Upon reading This Is Memorial Device, anyone can travel to the past, to the timeless era the 80s were. The motivation behind this paper was rather straightforward: confirming whether I was able to translate whole chapters and fragments that were related to one another, making sure to maintain the cohesion and coherency throughout. Since this book, which takes place in Airdrie and the surrounding area Scotland) in the 80s, is full of cultural references and Scottish realities, it was deemed pivotal to translate following the method of foreignization. For this, I made sure to reread some chapters by Venuti and other translators, as well as dipping into some translators’ blogs. From the beginning, I was focused on keeping the translation as close to the original culture as possible, which has been solved by adding a footnote or adding some information to the phrase, in order to clarify or neutralise the problem. It has to be taken into account that a couple months into writing this paper, I found out the book had been recently published in Spanish. Said translation has been taken into account when working on this paper: it has been compared with my translation and analysed, and it has also taught me about nuances and the difference they make, as well as reminding me that there’s always space for improvement – said in other words, there’s no ultimate translation.

Traducció comentada de l’anglès al català d’un fragment dels comptes anuals de l’any 2017 de Wal-Mart Stores, Inc.

Tutores: Lisa Gilbert i Lucie Pacho., Financial statements are, to a great extent, a challenge in translation owing to the lack of accounting translation guides and parallel texts that ease the semi-specialized translators’ task. Reference documents are particularly rare for the reason that most countries annual accounts differ between them and reference guides are only useful for a concrete pair of countries and languages. This paper’s aim, therefore, is to help in reducing this deficit through a commented informative translation from English into Catalan of Wal-Mart Stores, Inc. 2017’s consolidated income statement and balance sheet. The translation of these two financial statements provides translators with a model that allows them to identify some of the main differences existing between the accounting reports of Catalonia and the United States. This academic work also contains a contrast between these two financial statements in the source and the target language developed through a comparative analysis of the accounting laws these countries follow: the US-GAAP and the IFRS, in the United States; and the PGC, in Catalonia. Likewise, the presence of a commentary of translation problems for lexical and non-lexical units simplifies the understanding of the translation process and the systematization of problem solving. Moreover, this paper is accompanied by a glossary of accounting terms that allows readers to easily find the translation of a series of accounting terms in context. Indeed, this work is not a merely translation of two financial statements but also a financial statements translation guide available for semi-specialized translators. The problem-solving systematization for specific terms included in this paper is not exclusively applicable to the translation of these two concrete financial statements of Walmart, but also to other financial statements to be translated between this pair of countries and languages.

Guia de traducció per a la subtitulació en català del documental Paris is Burning (1990)

Tutor: Eduard Bartoll Teixidor., Paris is Burning (1990) is a documentary that shows the gay, queer and trans racialized communities subculture in the Harlem neighborhood of New York City during the second half of the 80s. It is an important file for the LGTB+ culture because it documents the nightlife of some communities that were rejected from the hegemonic society. The speech of the main characters draws attention to the slang and the gender treatment they use. This paper presents translation proposals for various expressions appeared in the documentary. The aim is to encourage the study, use, and visibility of the LGBT+ and Catalan slang, propose the Catalan subtitling of the documentary in Netflix, prove the existence of the Catalan LGBT+ slang and its relevance to the translation of the documentary, and brake with the masculine tradition and norm in Catalan and Spanish with the generic feminine and other neutral solutions. A research has been done on audiovisual translation, subtitling and its specificities; slang, its translation, resources and LGBT+ and Catalan slang; and the historical importance of Paris is Burning. Subsequently, the translation proposals for subtitling have been made and justified. The essay concludes that there is an LGTB+ Catalan slang and it is important for the paper, which humbly contributes to the LGBT+ and Catalan slang studies, that it can be used as documentation for the Catalan and Spanish translation of documents related to the drag world, and that gender gains importance in contexts where traditional roles are broken and challenged., Paris is Burning (1990) és un documental que mostra la subcultura dels col·lectius gai, queer i trans racialitzats al barri de Harlem de la ciutat de Nova York durant la segona meitat de la dècada de 1980. Es tracta d’un arxiu important per a la cultura LGTB+ perquè documenta l’esplai nocturn d’unes comunitats rebutjades per la societat hegemònica. El discurs de les persones protagonistes crida l’atenció per l’argot que utilitzen i el seu tractament de gènere. En aquest treball es presenten propostes de traducció per a diverses expressions argòtiques que apareixen al documental. Es pretén incentivar l’estudi, l’ús i la visibilització de l’argot LGTB+ i català, proposar la subtitulació al català del documental a la plataforma Netflix, comprovar l’existència de l’argot LGTB+ català i la seva rellevància per a la traducció del documental, i trencar la tradició i normativa masculina amb el femení genèric i altres solucions neutres. S’ha fet una recerca sobre traducció audiovisual, la subtitulació i les seves especificitats; l’argot, la seva traducció i recursos i l’argot LGTB+ i català; i la rellevància històrica de Paris is Burning. Posteriorment, s’han fet les propostes de traducció per a la seva subtitulació i s’han justificat les decisions preses. Es conclou que existeix l’argot LGTB+ català i ha estat important per al treball, que aquest contribueix humilment als estudis sobre el col·lectiu i l’argot català, pot servir de documentació per a la traducció de documents relacionats amb el món drag al català i al castellà, i que el gènere guanya importància en contextos en què es trenquen i qüestionen els rols tradicionals.
