FORMED-3 Cruise (29GD20140406) carried out on the Research Vessel García del Cid in 2014, Study of the continental shelf and upper slope bottom forms.Specific work:Recovery of the anchored oceanographic material from the previous campaign, sediment sampling and multibeam bathymetry and sediment sampling.The FORMED project proposes to characterize the large scale (> 1 m) bottom forms of the Spanish Mediterranean continental margin from the study of its morphology and the current processes that intervene in its formation and evolution.In parallel, it is proposed the monitoring of hydrodynamic processes and sediment transport in the bottom boundary layer to study wave-current processes potentially associated with dunes in the coastal area (delta del Ebro), internal waves related to "sediment waves" of prodelta (prodelta del Llobregat), internal waves as a potential generator mechanism of "sediment waves" in the continental slope (Gulf of Valencia) and the measurement of deep contornitic currents as a potential mechanism to explain the deep "sediment waves" (North of Menorca ). The analysis of the interaction between bottom shapes and hydrodynamic forcings is complemented by the application of sediment transport models and the formation of bottom shapes and with hydraulic channel tests. Finally, in the areas of the Ebro delta and Cabo de Palos, the bottom forms are analyzed as specific habitats, characterized by their communities and benthic habitats, and applications for the cartography of habitats integrating physical, geological and biological data are proposed, such as a utility tool in the management of the marine environment

FORMED-PALOS CRUISE, RV GARCÍA DEL CID

FORMED-PALOS Cruise (29GD20140602) carried out on the Research Vessel García del Cid in 2014, Bottom forms and their current dynamics in the Spanish Mediterranean continental margin.In each subarea, CTD profiles will be made to characterize the hydrographic situation and samples of sediment and macroinfauna will be obtained to characterize the community benthic In each station, the top 10 cm of the column of sediment and organisms of the macroinfauna with a Van Veen dredge (0.1m2), obtaining 3 dredges in each station.The epibenthic community will be sampled with a dredger "2m beam-trawl" ("rastell"),with a rigid opening of 2mx40cm, and a 1cm mesh flake to retain the macrofauna. There will be 5-7 fishing of 15 'duration located at random in each sampling station. The 5 fisheries correspond to the necessary replicas for obtain the minimum sample size based on the specific richness, and the samples are will standardize to a unit of surface dragged. The sampling network is planned for a depth sensor, type Scamnar, to ensure its positioning in the background. A first separation of the samples of the epifauna will be made, freezing the material for further definitive processing and analysis in the ICM. The samples of macroinfauna will be sieved with 1 mm mesh and fixed in 5% buffered formalin

DUST CRUISE, RV GARCÍA DEL CID

DUST Cruise (29GD20140710) carried out on the Research Vessel García del Cid in 2014, Impact of African dust instrusions on the active carbon fluxes in the Alboran Sea. The objectives of the campaign are the characterization of biogeochemical flows mediated by planktonic organisms and the study of the effect of intrusions of Norafrican dust on these flows in the NW of the Alboran Sea. For the achievement of these objectives will be collected water samples with Niskin bottles for analysis of nutrients, dissolved oxygen, chlorophyll a and phytoplankton and fishing with nets WP2 and LHPR to analyze the vertical distribution of biomass, activity metabolic of zooplankton and the active flux of carbon. In addition, they will be primary production trials under natural and simulated conditions (through addition of powder from Africa or equivalent nutrients). The stations are will distribute in two transects, from coast to the center of the anticyclonic turn.Specific works 1.Taking temperature, salinity and fluorescence data in the column of water through a CTD. 2. Determination of the attenuation of solar radiation in the water column using the Secchi disk and PAR sensor coupled to the CTD. 3. Sampling of sea water with a rosette equipped with bottles Niskin of 10 liters for the measurement of the following chemical variables and biological at various depths of the water column: - Nutrients (phosphates, nitrates, nitrites and silicates) - Chlorophyll a (total and fractionated) - Abundance and composition of the different size fractions of the phytoplankton (pico-, nano- and microplankton). 4. Phytoplankton sampling will be completed with incubations on deck of water samples for the determination of primary productivity fractionated by size and the determination of the incorporation of nitrogen and phosphorus by phytoplankton under both natural and under simulated conditions (by adding powder from Africa or equivalent nutrients). Likewise, in all the stations, the following samplings will be carried out in duplicate, carrying out zooplankton fishing once a day and another of night in each station: 5. Zooplankton sampling using vertical trawls with WP2 net of 200 μm mesh size. The samples will be fractioned by size on deck and the fractions and / or individuals will be preserved for the determination of biomass, enzymatic activities and taxonomy. 6. In stations with more than 100 m depth: Sampling of zooplankton by oblique entrainment with LHPR net. The samples are collected during the ascent of the net at intervals of 40 m depth and will be preserved for the determination of biomass, activities enzymatic and taxonomy

PRUEBAS_MAFIA Cruise (29GD20141020) carried out on the Research Vessel García del Cid in 2014, Tests of the MAFIA (Migrants and active flux in the Atlantic Ocean) project.One of the objectives of the project is the construction of a Semi-pelagic net capable of working with a single cable, in order to capture species of the mesopelagic environment.As these are tests of the functioning of a new equipment, we contemplate a working time in port, followed by tests at sea. In port, the assembly and first set-up of fishing net. Then it will go out to sea open, until reaching more than 500 m deep and some hauls will be made, with object to verify the maneuverability and effectiveness of the net. This process will be carried out in the two testing campaigns for which time is requested of the ship García del Cid
