VERDÚ ET AL.'S DATASETS ON PLANT RECRUITMENT NETWORKS

Data_S1.zip contiene 2 ficheros csv, Plant recruitment interactions (i.e., who recruits under whom) shape the composition, diversity and structure of plant communities. Despite the huge body of knowledge on the mechanisms underlying recruitment interactions between species, we still know little about the structure of the recruitment networks emerging in ecological communities. Modeling and analyzing the community-level structure of plant recruitment interactions as a complex network can provide relevant information on ecological and evolutionary processes acting both at the species and ecosystem levels. We report a data set containing 143 plant recruitment networks in 23 countries across five continents, including temperate and tropical ecosystems. Each network identifies the species under which another species recruits. All networks report the number of recruits (i.e., individuals) per species. The data set includes >850,000 recruiting individuals involved in 118,411 paired interactions between 3,318 vascular plant species across the globe. The cover of canopy species and open ground is also provided as a separated file. Three sampling protocols were used: 1) The Recruitment Network (RN) protocol (106 networks) focuses on interactions between established plants (“canopy species”) and plants in their early stages of recruitment (”recruit species”). A series of plots are delimited within a locality and all the individuals recruiting and their canopy species are identified; 2) The paired Canopy-Open (pCO) protocol (26 networks) consists in locating a potential canopy plant and identifying recruiting individuals under the canopy and in a nearby open space of the same area; 3) The Georeferenced plot (GP) protocol (11 networks) consists in using information from georeferenced individual plants in large plots to infer canopy-recruit interactions. Some networks incorporate data for both herbs and woody species, while others focus exclusively on woody species. The location of each study site, geographical coordinates, country, locality, responsible author, sampling dates, sampling method and life habit of both canopy and recruit species are provided. This database will allow researchers to test ecological, biogeographical and evolutionary hypotheses related to plant recruitment interactions., Peer reviewed

SUPPLEMENT OF A COMPARISON OF PRE-MILLENNIUM ERUPTION (946 CE) AND MODERN TEMPERATURES FROM TREE RINGS IN CHANGBAI MOUNTAIN, NORTHEAST ASIA

In this study, the tree species of carbonized trees was identified by analyzing the microscopic anatomical features of wood on three planes (cross-, radial-, and tangential-section). For the identified Korean pine (Pinus koraiensis Siebold & Zucc.) in this study, the microscopic anatomical features were showed below:, Cross-section features. The boundary of growth ring is slightly obvious, and the early wood gradually changes to late wood within the ring. The growth of early wood is uniform, and the early wood accounts for most of the ring width. The axial parenchyma tissue is absent. The resin channels are divided into axial and radial types. The axial channels are mostly single and usually distributed in the late wood or located at 2/3 of the ring width. The lipid cells are thin-walled and often contain quasi-invasion bodies. There are 3~6 lipid cells around the maximum axial resin channel. The transverse section of early wood tracheid is square, rectangular and polygon, and the axial parenchyma tissue is absent., Radial-section features. Radiative tracheids are located in 1~2 columns of the upper and lower edges, and are occasionally seen in the middle of the rays. The xylem low rays are sometimes made up entirely of radial tracheids. The inner wall is smooth and the outer edge is wavy. The cross field pattern between ray parenchyma cells and early wood tracheids was pane-like, or pine type was occasionally seen in late wood, with number of 1~4, 1 (rare 2) in horizontal line. Axial parenchyma cell horizontal wall perforation and end wall nodular thickening are usually absent or few, not obvious, no indentation., Tangential-section features. There are 4-8 wood rays per mm, including two types: single column and spindle-shaped. The single column of rays is 2~13 cells or more in height, most of them are 3~8 cells; the spindle rays have radial resin canals, 2~3 columns of ray cells above and below the approach; The upper and lower ends gradually sharpen into a single column, the height of which is 3-10 cells or more. The ray cells are usually oval in shape. The radial resin tract is much smaller, with 3-5 adipocytes around the tract., Conclusions. According to the microscopic anatomical characteristics of the above three planes, the carbonized logs, No. CBSXA-01, CBSXA-12, CBSXA-21, CBSXA-24, CBSXA-27, CBSXB-01, CBSXB-02, CBSXB-03, CBSXB-05, CBSXB-07, CBSXB-08, CBSXB-10, CBSXB-11, CBSXB-14, CBSXB-15, CBSXB-17, CBSXB-21, and CBSXB-26, were identified as Korean pine (Pinus koraiensis) of the family Pinaceae and the genus Pinus. In the supplemental material, we summarize some of the (already published) main equations of the formalism of relativistic Screened Korringa-Kohn-Rostoker method to solve the Bogoliubov-deGennes equations, together with the main formulas of the embedded cluster method (Note 1). We also provide some detailed notes on the computational procedure (Note 2). We included some supporting figures of the density of states in the normal state of a magnetic chain in the middle and in the edge atoms comparing the ferromagnetic and spin-spiral (Note 3). We show the density of states of an Au/Nb(110) overlayer sytem in the superconducting state (Note 4) and an illustration of the detailed the effect of spin-orbit coupling in the superconducting state (Note 5). Description: The Malaspina2010_chlorophyll.xlsx file contains the inorganic nutrient concentration data of the circunnavigation expedition Malaspina 2010, which took place between 14/12/2010 and 14/07/2011 on board the BIO Hespérides. The date and position of the sampling stations are listed in the “Data” sheet of the file. Methods: Water samples for measurement of the concentration of nitrate, nitrite (nitrate + nitrite in leg 1), phosphate and silicate were collected from 3 m depth with a 30-liter Niskin bottle and from selected depths between 10 and 200 m with a Rosette of 24 10-liter Niskin bottles attached to a CTD probe. Inorganic nutrient concentrations were determined by means of a Skalar autoanalyzer, following the standard spectrophotometric procedures described in Grasshoff et al. (1999) and Blasco et al. ECOHYDROLOGICAL NICHE SEGREGATION AMONG DESERT SHRUBS IN A GYPSUM-CALCAREOUS FORMATION, NORTH-WESTERN IRAN [DATASET]

In the poorly studied Irano-Turanian gypsum deserts, knowledge of the ecohydrological strategies of different plant species is essential to understand community complexity in these vulnerable ecosystems. We studied the ecohydrological strategies of five co-existing subshrub members of Caryophyllales, ascertaining if their rooting architecture, gypsum affinity or photosynthetic pathway determined their water uptake, and if gypsum crystallisation water could be a relevant water source for plants in different seasons. We conducted soil and xylem sampling for isotope analyses in spring and summer and extracted water by cryogenic vacuum distillation. Oxygen and hydrogen isotope compositions were determined and compared with visual representation and Bayesian Mixing Models to determine species ecohydrological strategies. Species – season interactions were related to differences in xylem sap isotopic composition. Three basic strategies relying on contrasting the use of free topsoil moisture and deep soil water could be detected and were in part explained by rooting architecture. Plant gypsum affinity and photosynthetic pathways did not have a significant effect on the water sources used by the plants. Ecohydrological niche segregation was explained partly by rooting architecture and species-specific traits. DATASET: GLOBAL RANGE DYNAMICS OF THE BEARDED VULTURE (GYPAETUS BARBATUS) FROM THE LAST GLACIAL MAXIMA TO CLIMATE CHANGE SCENARIOS

This dataset consists of Bearded Vulture Gypaetus barbatus occurrence points which were used to develop a distribution model to study its suitable habitat of this species. Using these data, we modelled the current distribution of Bearded Vulture throughout its entire range and projected the Last Glacial Maxima (LGM), Mid-Holocene (MH) and future distribution under 2070s climate change scenarios. We compiled these data from the entire distribution range in Asia, Europe and Africa using different sources: freely accessible online resources including, eBird and GBIF repositories, published reports and grey literature and occurrence data collected by the authors in the field, mostly in Nepal., The Rufford Foundation, UK; (Grants 18462-B) supported TRS to conduct fieldwork in Nepal.
