FLOWERING PHENOLOGY DATA OF SILENE CILIATA POIRET (CARYOPHYLLACEAE)

  • Javier Morente López
  • José María Iriondo Alegría
This data set contains the phenological monitoring of nine Silene ciliate populations located in three mountains of the Sistema Central (Spain). We counted the total number of new flowers of each plant weekly from 15 April 2014, when the first flower appeared, until 25 September 2014, when the last new flower appeared , during a total of 23 censuses. From these data we calculated six individual-based flowering-related traits: flowering onset, end, duration, and moment, and total number of flowers. Flowering onset and end were defined as the number of days elapsed between 1 January 2014 and the day of first and last flower of the plant appeared respectively. Duration was estimated as the number of days elapsed between the onset and end of flowering. Moment was defined as the number of days elapsed between the date of flowering onset of an individual and the date with the greatest number of flowers on that individual. The total number of flowers was estimated as the maximum number of flowers a plant had at any point during the census period.

LOCAL GEOMAGNETIC INDEX (LDI) FOR 2010 AT DIFFERENT LOCATIONS

  • Guerrero Ortega, Antonio
  • Cid Tortuero, Consuelo
  • Saiz Villanueva, Elena
This local geomagnetic index indicates the perturbation of the geomagnetic field (horizontal component) for several locations. It is a measure of the external to the Earth irregular geomagnetic variations. It is obtained after removing a baseline and the daily regular variation from observed measurements. THE IMPACT OF RAPID ADOPTION OF ONLINE ASSESSMENT ON STUDENTS' PERFORMANCE AND PERCEPTIONS

  • Daniel Domínguez Figaredo
  • Inés Gil-Jaurena
  • Javier Morentin Encina

Description of the project

The research focused on the influence of online assessment on academic performance and students' perception of the new method. Two data sources were used: the contrast of academic performance indicators (assessment, success and achievement rates, and average marks obtained) between the online examination call and the previous ones with face-to-face examinations; and a questionnaire to a sample of students on their perception of the online assessment experience.

Description of the dataset

Aggregate data from a survey addressed to enrolled university students, about their perception of the rapid change in assessment methods at the university. The survey included questions about previous experience with online exams, the conditions under which they took the exams, perception of the time for completing the exam, difficulty, anxiety, control/invigilation, and preferences about assessment modalities. The survey included closed questions, Likert-type questions, and an open-ended question for additional observations the students would like to express.

,

FORENSIC ANALYSIS OF VENEZUELAN ELECTIONS DURING THE CHÁVEZ PRESIDENCY

  • Jiménez, Raúl
  • Hidalgo Trenado, Manuel
Hugo Chavez dominated the Venezuelan electoral landscape since his first presidential victory in 1998 until his death in 2013. Nobody doubts that he always received considerable voter support in the numerous elections held during his mandate. However, the integrity of the electoral system has come into question since the 2004 Presidential Recall Referendum. From then on, different sectors of society have systematically alleged electoral irregularities or biases in favor of the incumbent party. We have carried out a thorough forensic analysis of the national-level Venezuelan electoral processes held during the 1998-2012 period to assess these complaints. The second-digit Benford's law and two statistical models of vote distributions, recently introduced in the literature, are reviewed and used in our case study. In addition, we discuss a new method to detect irregular variations in the electoral roll. The outputs obtained from these election forensic tools are examined taking into account the substantive context of the elections and referenda under study. Thus, we reach two main conclusions. Firstly, all the tools uncover anomalous statistical patterns, which are consistent with election fraud from 2004 onwards. Although our results are not a concluding proof of fraud, they signal the Recall Referendum as a turning point in the integrity of the Venezuelan elections. Secondly, our analysis calls into question the reliability of the electoral register since 2004. In particular, we found irregular variations in the electoral roll that were decisive in winning the 50% majority in the 2004 Referendum and in the 2012 Presidential Elections
