SPECIATED MECHANISM IN QUATERNARY CERVIDS (CERVUS AND CAPREOLUS) ON BOTH SIDES OF THE PYRENEES: A MULTIDISCIPLINARY APPROACH
- Uzunidis, Antigone
Cervids, and especially the red deer Cervus elaphus, are among the most regularly and abundantly recorded ungulates in Pleistocene/Paleolithic bone assemblages. Numerous Pleistocene or Holocene subspecies have been described, reinforcing their status as essential proxies for environmental and chronological reconstructions. Despite this, at the beginning of the Late Pleistocene, their diversity seems to have decreased. In this study, we analysed teeth and some postcranial elements of Cervus and Capreolus from northeastern Iberia and southeastern France to clarify their morphological characteristics and ecological adaptations. We describe a transitional form in northeastern Iberia between the western European stock and the current form C. e. hispanicus. Such sub-speciation processes are connected to biogeographical factors, as there were limited exchanges between north-eastern Iberia and the northern Pyrenees, whereas the north-western part of the peninsula seems more connected to the northern Pyrenees. The anatomical plasticity (morpho-functional adaptation and body size) of red deer is connected to dietary flexibility (dental meso- and microwear). Conversely, Capreolus shows greater morphological and ecological homogeneity. Body size variations seem directly correlated with their ability to browse throughout the year. The marked differences between the eco-bio-geographical responses of the two taxa can be explained by their habitat selection.

REPLICATION DATA FOR: CHARCOAL AND POLLEN ANALYSIS: EXAMPLES OF HOLOCENE FIRE DYNAMICS IN MEDITERRANEAN IBERIAN PENINSULA
- Burjachs, Francesc
- Expósito, Isabel
The present study focuses on charcoal particles (a component of vegetal ashes, Bodí et al., 2014) counted during palynological analysis. The absolute frequencies of this microcharcoal have been correlated with pollen percentages of resprouts, mesic trees, Pinus or AP (arboreal pollen), in order to observe patterns in the spread of wildfires, dynamic changes in plant succession, and possible cyclicities in Holocene microclimatic changes. The sites selected for this work are located within the Mediterranean area of the Iberian Peninsula and in the Eivissa Balearic Islands, between 42°16′ N and 36°47′ N. Results show two brief changes in vegetation dynamics during the Holocene. The first coincides with the 8.2 cal kyr event and marks both the beginning of Holocene dynamic changes in plant succession and the Climatic Optimum. During this first phase, charcoal peaks coincide with minimum percentages of mesic taxa (low rainfall) and occur just before an increase of resprout taxa (taxa which grow after fires). The second change happens at the ~ 4.2 cal BP kyr event, when fires are most frequent and resprout taxa increase their values compared to mesic taxa and forest cover (AP). We have also observed some differences in vegetal dynamics studied at different latitudes, which appear to be punctuated by climate or insularity. In short, (i) actual succession of Mediterranean vegetation can be recognized in the past; (ii) resilience in vegetation is more common during the first half of the Holocene than in the recent Holocene: A trend to aridity, reduced biomass and anthropization has caused vegetation resilience to decline; (iii) synchronicity between fire peaks of different sequences studied is very rare; and (iv) coincidence of many peaks of charcoal with Bond events inclines us to think that fires are more conditioned by the climate than by anthropogenic impact.

DIFFERENTIAL TREE GROWTH EXPLAINED BY SNP LOCI AND CLIMATE IN A CIRCUM-MEDITERRANEAN PINE

Understanding the genetic basis of adaptation and plasticity in trees constitutes a knowledge gap. In this study we analysed 20-year tree-ring series of 130 trees, structured in 23 populations grown in a common garden experiment. We tested for genotype by environment interactions (G×E) of indexed ring width (RWI) and indexed early to latewood ratios (ELI) using factorial regression analyses, that describes G×E as differential gene sensitivity to climate. The data include raw tree-ring series, indexed ring-width and early to latewood ratio series, 20 SNPs, climate variables at site, populations sensitivity to particular climate factors, and climate at origin of populations.

Stable carbon and nitrogen isotope ratios in whiskers and blood of young (2-3 years old) and sub-adult (4-7 years old) Antarctic fur seal males from the South Shetland Islands were used to assess the seasonal and interannual changes in the krill contribution to their diet. The dataset shows the stable isotope ratios revealing that krill dominated the diet of young and sub-adult male Antarctic fur seals year-round, with penguins, and not fish, as the second major prey, regardless of year and season. Whisker values are represented from the oldest part of the whisker (tip) to the newest one (root).
