FOSTERING COMPUTATIONAL THINKING WITH SIMULATED 3D ROBOTS IN SECONDARY EDUCATION

Computational Thinking (CT) can be defined as the thought processes involved in formulating problems so that their solutions can be represented as sequential steps and algorithms. It is a key skill for children in the 21st century. However, it is unclear how CT can be developed most effectively in children. Several pedagogical methodologies have been proposed and are being investigated. The main aim of this paper is to test the hypothesis which states that using three-dimensional (3D) simulated robots helps in the learning of programming and CT concepts, such as directions, loops, conditionals, and functions. The research questions are: Does this hypothesis hold true? Are some concepts easier or better learned than others and to what extent? The goal is to measure and evaluate the effect of using as a learning tool a platform with 3D simulated robots and realistic physics, and compare it with the standard Scratch learning tool which does not use robotics but a two-dimensional (2D) cartoon avatar they are already familiar with. For practical reasons, a quasiexperimental design with nonequivalent groups and 85 second-year Secondary Education students (ages 12–13) was performed. They were separated into control and experimental groups and followed a seven-session intervention with the baseline 2D Scratch and the 3D simulated robots platform, respectively. Both used a visual block programming language and the same activities. To have quantitative and reliable results, a widely accepted CT test has been used, pre- and postintervention. Also qualitative feedback is presented. The obtained results show that using the platform with simulated 3D robots significantly helps when developing students' CT. With it, the students do learn basic programming concepts and reach higher scores in the CT test. This improvement applies to all CT-analyzed concepts except in functions where the grades are maintained. Furthermore, students manage to master the activities on the 3D simulated robots platform, which reflects on the empowerment the platform has got in them. The dependent variables (DV) of the pre- and posttest are, first, related to learning results as measured with a validated CT questionnaire. This questionnaire contains 28 items. For simplification purposes, pre- and posttest variables are rescaled from 0 to 10. Second, four dependent variables are related to the different computational concepts involved in the experiment: Directions, Loops, Conditionals, and Functions. In a more detailed study, new variables appear, with the aim of giving more information: Loops-Repeat-times, Loops-Repeat-until, Conditionals-Simple, Conditionals-Composite, Conditionals-While, and Functions-Simple. All of them scored from 0 to 10. One factor, Group, is considered to be an independent variable, related to the use or not of Kibotics. Type Variable Name DV Pretest scores Pretest DV Posttest scores Posttest DV Direction Direct DV Loops Loops DV Conditionals Condit DV Functions Function DV Loops-Repeat-times Loops_t DV Loops-Repeat-until Loops_u DV Conditional-simple Condit_s DV Conditional-composite Condit_c DV Conditional-while Condit_w IV Use of 3dsimulated robot Group

RAW DATA FOR METAGENOMIC ANALYSES OF ENVIRONMENTAL SAMPLES TAKEN IN A PIG FARM IN SPAIN

  • Pérez-Díaz, José Luis
  • del Álamo, Cristina María
  • Paula Aranguren-Rivas

Metagenomic study of environmental samples collected at a pig farm in Spain. This study is part of the HE-FARM project under the Horizon Europe programme, which aims to improve biosecurity on farms.

Bacterial genera present in several areas of a pig farm were analyzed using high-throughput sequencing techniques. Samples were collected from the skin and feces of animals, as well as from surfaces, water, and air. The analyses revealed a strong cor-relation between air and skin samples, supporting the idea that bacterial growth on skin is potentially a mechanism of aerosolization and airborne transport. A water–air trans-mission route also appears to be present, although the direction of the transport mecha-nism cannot yet be determined. Other potential routes, such as contact with surfaces or feces, seem to be less efficient.

This data contains the raw data used for metagenomic analyses (16S) of environmental samples in a pig farm.

It includes the genomic data for each sample analyzed and compared in the study titled 'Skin Aerosolisation Predominance in a Pig Farm'. The data is organized in a way that facilitates further exploration and analysis, ensuring that researchers can effectively utilize it for their own studies.

  • MENESES, JESUS
Experimental Setup: - Rotational Speeds: 20 Hz, 40 Hz, and 60 Hz. - Fault Severity: The study includes 9 distinct levels of machined cracks, ranging from incipient to significant structural degradation. - Crack Locations: Axle6: Crack located at the mid-span (center) of the shaft / Axle7: Crack located at a lateral position, specifically at a section change. This data is intended for researchers working on vibration signature analysis, structural health monitoring (SHM), and the development of robust fault detection algorithms.
The encoding of data files follows a format of the type YYYY.MM.DD_SS_CC − n.csv, where: - YYYY.MM.DD corresponds with the date in year (YYYY) month (MM) and day (DD), - SS is the rotational speed of the test in Hz (20, 40 or 60), - CC is the condition of the tested axle (from HS which means Healthy condition, L1 first level of crack to L9) - the last number n is the number of file measured during the test.
The crack size level is stated as: • Healthy shaft (HS). • Level 1 (L1): cracked shaft with a depth of 1.36% relative to its section. • Level 2 (L2): cracked shaft with a depth of 4.16% relative to its section. • Level 3 (L3): cracked shaft with a depth of 7.31% relative to its section. • Level 4 (L4): cracked shaft with a depth of 10.95% relative to its section. • Level 5 (L5): cracked shaft with a depth of 17.096% relative to its section. • Level 6 (L6): cracked shaft with a depth of 22.68% of its section. • Level 7 (L7): cracked shaft with a depth of 29.20% of its section. • Level 8 (L8): cracked shaft with a depth of 39.80% of its section. • Level 9 (L9): cracked shaft with a depth of 50.00% of its section. The axle diameter is 0.0207 m and the efective length is 0.26 m
