List of all 14C dates made on canoes, Navigation in the Mediterranean in the Neolithic is studied here through the boats that were used, the degree of technical specialisation in their construction and, above all, their chronology. After a brief explanation of the exceptional site of La Marmotta, the characteristics and chronology of the five canoes found at the settlement and one of the nautical objects linked to Canoe 1 are discussed. This will allow a reflection on the capability of Neolithic societies for navigation owing to their high technological level. This technology was an essential part in the success of their expansion, bearing in mind that in a few millennia they occupied the whole Mediterranean from Cyprus to the Atlantic seaboard of the Iberian Peninsula., Peer reviewed

SYNTHESIS AND CHARACTERIZATION OF MULTILAYERED CRALN/AL2O3 TANDEM COATING USING HIPIMS FOR SOLAR SELECTIVE APPLICATIONS AT HIGH TEMPERATURE [DATASET]

The effect of applying a negative bias during deposition of a previously designed multilayer solar selective absorber coating was studied on two types of substrates (316L stainless steel and Inconel 625). The solar selective coating is composed of different chromium aluminum nitride layers deposited using a combination of radiofrequency (RF), direct current (DC), and high-power impulse magnetron sputtering (HiPIMS) technologies. The chemical composition is varied to generate an infrared reflective/absorber layer (with low Al addition and N vacancies) and two CrAlN intermediate layers with medium and high aluminum content (Al/Cr = 0.6 and 1.2). A top aluminum oxide layer (Al2O3) is deposited as an antireflective layer. In this work, a simultaneous DC-pulsed bias (−100 V, 250 kHz) was applied to the substrates in order to increase the film density. The optical performance, thermal stability, and oxidation resistance was evaluated and compared with the performance obtained with similar unbiased coating and a commercial Pyromark paint reference at 600, 700, and 800 °C. The coating remained stable after 200 h of annealing at 600 °C, with solar absorptance (α) values of 93% and 92% for samples deposited on stainless steel and Inconel, respectively, and a thermal emittance ε25°C of 18%. The introduction of additional ion bombardment during film growth through bias assistance resulted in increased durability, thermal stability, and working temperature limits compared with unbiased coatings. The solar-to-mechanical energy conversion efficiency at 800 °C was found to be up to 2 times higher than Pyromark at C = 100 and comparable at C = 1000., Peer reviewed

CLIMATOLOGIC ARIDITY IN SPAIN FOR THE 1961-2020 PERIOD

[EN] The Aridity Index in Spain v1.0.0. dataset consists of 42 netCDF files with Aridity Index information of Spain (Iberian Peninsula territories, Balearic and Canary islands) at monthly, seasonal and annual time-scale for the 1961-2020 time-period. The data are divided into time series and climatologies calculated for the entire period (1961-2020) and two subperiods (1961-1990 and 1991-2020). The time series correspond to the mean Aridity Index and in the case of climatologies, in addition to the mean, the coefficients of variation of the index are presented. For operational reasons the data are shown divided into two groups of grids, those corresponding to mainland Spain and the Balearic Islands (spatial extent: longitude = 1115, latitude: 834, units = 0.02 degrees, EPSG: 25830) and a second group for the Canary Islands only (longitude = 455, latitude: 168, units = 0.02 degrees, EPSG: 25830).
[ES] El conjunto de datos Aridity Index in Spain v1.0.0 consta de 42 archivos netCDF con información del Índice de Aridez de España (territorios de la Península Ibérica, Baleares y Canarias) a escala temporal mensual, estacional y anual para el periodo 1961-2020. Los datos se dividen en series temporales y climatologías calculadas para todo el periodo (1961-2020) y dos subperiodos (1961-1990 y 1991-2020). Las series temporales corresponden al Índice de Aridez medio y en el caso de las climatologías, además de la media, se presentan los coeficientes de variación del índice. Por razones operativas los datos se muestran divididos en dos grupos de mallas, las correspondientes a la España peninsular y Baleares (extensión espacial: longitud = 1115, latitud: 834, unidades = 0,02 grados) y un segundo grupo sólo para Canarias (longitud = 455, latitud: 168, unidades = 0,02 grados)., [EN] A monthly, seasonal and annual climatological aridity gridded data set over Spain (Iberian Peninsula territories, Balearic and Canary islands) between January 1961 and December 2020. The aridity index is a measure of the dryness or humidity of a region's climate, and along with average temperature, it is one of the climatic factors that best explain the distribution of different biomes on the planet. From the meteorological observation data of the National Climate Data Bank of the State Agency AEMET, and using the experience and methods developed by the research team for the elaboration of other databases such as the Historical Database of Drought in Spain (https://monitordesequia.csic.es/historico), a grid database of the Aridity Index defined by the United Nations Environmental Program has been obtained: (AI, mm / mm) as the ratio of precipitation (P, mm) to potential evapotranspiration (PET, mm): AI = P / PET. Here we use ETo (reference evapotranspiration), as computed by the FAO-56 Penman-Monteith equation. Data for P and ETo have been obtained from the Historical Database of Drought in Spain (https://monitordesequia.csic.es/historico). Both the time series and the climatologies of the periods/subperiods at monthly, seasonal and annual time scales have been calculated. Here we shall consider the period 1961-2020, spanning 60 years. This time frame can be sub-divided into two equal 30-year periods, also known as normal-periods: 1961-1990 and 1991-2020. The data are separated into two files groups: one for mainland Spain (including the Balearic Islands) and one for the Canary Islands., [ES] Esta base de datos climática presenta un conjunto de información representado en forma de cuadrícula a escalas mensual, estacional y anual sobre la aridez en España (territorios de la Península Ibérica, Baleares y Canarias) entre enero de 1961 y diciembre de 2020. El índice de aridez es una medida del carácter seco o húmedo del clima de un lugar, y junto con la temperatura media es uno de los factores climáticos que mejor explican la distribución de los diferentes biomas en el planeta. Table_1_Rare earth elements distribution in the Gulf of Cádiz (SW Spain): geogenic vs. anthropogenic influence.docx, There is a current interest in the study of the geochemical behavior of the rare earth elements (REE) in aquatic systems since their identification as potential microcontaminants in natural waters. In this context, here we report the concentrations and patterns of dissolved REE (dREE) in the waters of the Gulf of Cádiz (GoC) and its major estuaries (Guadiana, Tinto-Odiel and Guadalquivir). Contamination in this area by metals has been extensively reported, linked to acid-mine inputs resulting from the mineralization of the Iberian Pyrite Belt, discharged mainly to the Tinto-Odiel river. However, the impact of these inputs on the concentrations and distribution of the dREE in the coastal waters of the GoC has not been addressed yet. Accordingly, elevated concentrations of dREE were obtained in the Tinto-Odiel estuary compared to the Guadiana and Guadalquivir, reflecting the impact of acid-mine drainage on this system. Only a significant fraction of anthropogenic gadolium (Gd) was observed in the Guadalquivir estuary, as a result of the input from major urban areas, where anthropogenic Gd fractions higher than 70% over the total dissolved pool were obtained for the freshwater end-member. Regarding the surface waters of the GoC, typical NE Atlantic distribution patterns of dREEs were obtained, but modified by two different end-members within this region. Accordingly, and despite the low water discharge of the Tinto-Odiel river, its elevated concentrations lead to an increase in the concentrations of dREEs in the nearshore waters of the GoC and producing a distinctive signature as observed for the MREE anomalies and HREE/LREE ratios. At the easternmost stations, close to the Strait of Gibraltar, these signals are also impacted by the inflow of Mediterranean waters and also by the discharge of the Guadalquivir river., Peer reviewed
