TOPERAS: MOLEHILL COUNTS IN MONTAÑA PALENTINA (SPAIN)

[Description of methods used for collection/generation of data] The purpose of the sampling was to obtain an index of montane water vole (Arvicola amphibius cantabriae) abundance. For this purpose, 278 fixed sampling points (locationID) were chosen in the study area, resampling them every year in autumn. Since 2025, another sampling has also been winter. The points are located in Meadows and grasslands. The selection was random, using QGIS, with two constraints: they had to be more than 100 m away from each other and that they were less than 500 m from the road. From the year 2023 onwards, 25 other points within forest habitats were selected with the same characteristics. At each points, a 100 m transect was made, parallel to the riverbeds, to maintain constant soil and moisture conditions. Each transect was divided into 20 segments, 5 m long by 5 m wide (2.5 m on each side of the line of advance), and the presence/absence of signs in each segment was noted. In this way, an abundance index was obtained, ranging from 0 (no signs found) to 20 (signs present in all segments). This value correlates with the abundance of the species (Giraudoux et al. 1995). Sampling was repeated annually in late September/early October. Although the target species to be counted was the montane water vole, the presence of Lusitanian pine vole (Microtus lusitanicus), Iberian mole (Talpa occidentalis), cattle and horse was also noted. The molehills of the wild species were differentiated by their characteristics of size, shape, entrance and disposition (Miñarro et al. 2012). SEAWATER CARBONATE SYSTEM VARIABLES IN THE SURFACE WATERS OF TWO TIME-SERIES IN THE NW MEDITERRANEAN SEA WITH MONTHLY SAMPLING: L'ESTARTIT OCEANOGRAPHIC STATION (EOS; 22/01/2010 TO 23/08/2019) AND THE BLANES BAY MICROBIAL OBSERVATORY (BBMO; 22/12/2009 TO 02/08/2022) [DATASET]

This dataset is composed of 4 files. The main ones are the dataset itself (‘BBMO_database_2009-2022_hy1.csv’ and ‘EOS_database_2010-2019_hy1.csv’) in WHP-Exchange bottle format, with temperature, salinity, dissolved inorganic nutrient concentrations, pH, and total alkalinity data. Information about the time-series name, date, and location (latitude and longitude) is also provided. Information about the equipment used for seawater carbonate system data is also given. The other two files (‘README_BBMO_database_2009-2022.txt’ and ‘README_EOS_database_2010-2019.txt’) include a short description of the database variables, units and more details on the time-series data. The data are provided under an Attribution-ShareAlike 4.0 International license. However, if you use the data, so as to support the authors, please consider citing the above-mentioned article where data collection and analytical techniques are given in detail. Here we only provide an overall description of the content of the data file, The database provides discrete measurements of seawater carbonate system variables (pH and total alkalinity) and ancillary variables (dissolved inorganic nutrients, temperature, salinity, and pressure) in surface seawater collected at two time-series stations, EOS and BBMO, conducted over 2009–2022. The database compiles all the information, measurements, and analysis performed (including date, location, and equipment used). All chemical analyses were assigned a quality indicator. At the two time-series stations, monthly sampling of surface seawater was performed. BBMO temperature and salinity were measured with a SAIV-A/S-SD204 CTD, while at EOS temperature was measured with reversible thermometers and salinity was measured with two CTDs, a SAIV-A/S-SD204 CTD and a CTD75M. For consistency between BBMO and EOS datasets, the salinity record obtained with the SAIV-A/S-SD204 CTD is considered in this study. When salinity values from the SAIV-A/S-SD204 CTD were missing, salinity values from CTD75M were used. The salinity records obtained with the two CTDs were quality controlled and calibrated to obtain a consistent dataset. Discrete seawater samples for pH, TA, and dissolved inorganic nutrients were taken monthly from a depth of 0.5 m both stations (with a Niskin bottle at EOS and in 10 L polyethylene carboys at BBMO). The biogeochemical variables shown in the database are pH reported on the total hydrogen ion scale at 25 °C (PH_TOT), total alkalinity (ALKALI), and dissolved inorganic nutrients (phosphate, PHSPHT, Silicate, SILCAT, and Nitrate, NITRAT). PH_TOT data were obtained by the spectrophotometric method with m-cresol purple using a Cary 100 UV-vis spectrophotometer containing a 25 °C-thermostated cells holder following Clayton and Byrne (1993). Triplicate samples were taken. At EOS, three cylindrical optical glass cells with a 10 cm path-length were filled directly from the Niskin bottle right after reaching land, ready to be analyzed in the next 3–4 hrs. At BBMO, a 150 mL glass bottle was filled leaving no headspace, and three 10 cm path-length cylindrical optical glass cells were filled from it once in the ICM laboratory (< 2h after sampling). For ALKALI measurements, two samples per site were taken in 500 mL borosilicate glass bottles were filled, rinsed three times, and carefully filled from the bottom with a tube. Samples for ALKALI were poisoned with 300 µL mercuric chloride (HgCl2) saturated solution to halt biological activity (Dickson et al., 2007), right after reaching land for EOS samples and at the ICM laboratory for BBMO samples. Bottles were then stored in the dark at room temperature until they were measured in the laboratory, within days up to one month. Each ALKALI sample was measured by duplicate. ALKALI was analyzed by potentiometric titration, determined by double endpoint titration (Mintrop et al., 2000; Pérez and Fraga, 1987), and calibrated with reference materials (Prof. A. Dickson, Scripps Institution of Oceanography (USA); Batches #93, #104, #136, and #179). Samples for dissolved inorganic nutrients were stored frozen at -20 °C in sterile falcon tubes until analysis. These tubes were filled directly from the Niskin bottle upon reaching land in EOS and from a bottle at the ICM laboratory in the case of BBMO samples. Dissolved inorganic nutrients were determined by standard continuous flow analysis with colorimetric detection (Hansen and Grassof, 1983) using a Bran + Luebbe autoanalyser, This research was funded by the European Union – NextGeneration EU – as part of the MITECO program for the Spanish Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan (Recovery and Resilience Facility of the European Union established by the Regulation (EU) 2020/2094), entrusted to CSIC, AZTI, SOCIB, and the universities of Vigo and Cadiz. The book contained the first edition of the collected writings attributed to the founder of the Almohad movement, Ibn Tūmart (d. 524/1130). The edition of the Arabic text was prepared by Jean-Dominique Luciani (1851–1932) and Goldziher contributed an introduction of some 100 pages. Goldziher wrote his text in German. Its translation was commissioned to two French orientalists: first to Edmond Doutté (1857-1926), who at some point had to withdraw from the task because of health issues, and then to Maurice Gaudefroy-Demombynes (1862-1957), who prepared the translation that was finally published. In addition, René Basset (1855-1924), professor at the École supérieure des Lettres in Algiers, refers in some of his letters to Goldziher to the work on the book. [Introduction] The sunflower broomrape (Orobanche cumana Wallr.) gene pools of the Guadalquivir Valley and Cuenca province in Spain had predominantly race-F virulence. A new race G was observed recently in the Guadalquivir Valley potentially due to the genetic recombination of the avirulence genes of both gene pools., [Methods] In this research, we have studied populations with atypical virulence from Cuenca. These populations parasitize on DEB2 sunflower line, resistant to all race-G populations evaluated. Ten populations collected in Cuenca province were evaluated with sunflower differential lines and genotyped with 67 SNP markers., [Results] Although genetic recombination with individuals of the Guadalquivir Valley gene pool has been observed in most populations, recombination of avirulence genes was discarded as the cause of the new virulence because the population with the highest degree of attack on DEB2 showed no introgression from an external gene pool. Accordingly, a point mutation is proposed as the putative cause of the new virulence., [Discussion] The present study provided a detailed characterization of each population, including the accurate classification of the individuals belonging to each of the classical Spanish gene pools, F1 hybrids, and those that evolved from hybridization between both gene pools. This information is essential to understand how sunflower broomrape populations are evolving in Spain, which in turn may be helpful to understand the dynamics of sunflower broomrape populations in other areas of the world and use this information to develop durable strategies for resistance breeding., Peer reviewed

PHOTOOXIDATION EFFECT IN LIQUID LIPID MATRICES: ANSWERS FROM AN INNOVATIVE FTIR SPECTROSCOPY STRATEGY WITH “MESH CELL” INCUBATION [DATASET]

The dataset consists of: a numerical quantitative file saved both in .xlsx and .ods formats (“Photooxidation_Dataset_ods” - “Photooxidation_Dataset_xlsx.xlsx”. A README file “Photooxidation_README_rtf.rtf”, This data set contains the data on fatty acid composition and FTIR absorption of different lipid matrices, including virgin olive oil and sunflower oil. The data correspond to the following publication: N. Tena, R. Aparicio, D.L. García-González; 2018; Photooxidation effect in liquid lipid matrices: Answers from an innovative FTIR spectroscopy strategy with ‘mesh cell’ incubation. Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry, 66, 3541–3549, https://doi.org/10.1021/acs.jafc.7b05981. In this work, a new strategy based on ‘mesh cell’-FTIR was developed and optimized to monitor chemical changes in different lipid matrices using a combination of light and mild heating was applied. Thus, the objective was to check the effect of photooxidation, with or without the combined effect of mild heating, and always using moderate conditions that could be closer to the conditions that are given in transport or distribution, avoiding high temperatures as in other accelerated studies. The study was carried out with different lipid matrices: triolein (used as model without any minor compound), sunflower oil, refined olive oil and virgin olive oil. The data has been reorganized for a better understanding. Thus, the sheets include the data for three different incubation conditions: 400 lx and 35°C, 400 lx and 23°C, 400 lx and 23°C. On the other hand, each sheet includes the fatty acid composition of the lipid matrices (before being subjected to degradation) and different FTIR parameters during incubation. These parameters include the minimum value of peak height (min. peak height), maximum value of peak height (max. peak height), the difference between maximum and minimum values of peak height (∆ height), and the slope of the regression line of absorption over time [Slope (x10-3)]. Furthermore, these parameters have been measured in different spectrum location to consider primary and secondary oxidation products and other degradation compounds: Alcohols (~3535 cm-1), hydroperoxides (~3430 cm-1), and C=C stretching absorption of unsaturated carbonyl compound (~1640 cm-1) associated to free fatty acids (hydrolysis). [EN] MOPREDAS consists of 6 files in .xls format containing the information structured as follows: A (ID -pixel identifier-), B (longitude), C (latitude), D (year) and E-P (n1 to n12, monthly precipitation for the months from January to December expressed in mm). The union of the files constitutes the grid, since the dataset is divided into 6 latitudinal belts. [ES] MOPREDAS consta de 6 archivos en formato .xls que contienen la informacion estructurada del siguiente modo: A (ID -identificador del píxel-), B (longitud), C (latitud), D (año) y E-P (n1 a n12, precipitación mensual de los meses de enero a diciembre expresadas en mm). La unión de los archivos constituye el grid, pues el dataset está dividido en 6 franjas latitudinales., [EN] A monthly gridded precipitation data set over peninsular Spain between December 1945 and December 2005 has been created. The dataset was developed from surface observations from the National Climatic Data Bank (BNDC) of the Spanish National Meteorological and Meteorological Service (AEMET). A total of 6821 data series with more than 10 years of records were used, providing a total of 2670 complete and homogeneous series. Station data were interpolated on a regular 0.1° × 0.1° grid using the angular distance weighting (ADW) method., [ES] Un conjunto de datos mensuales de precipitación en cuadrícula sobre la España peninsular entre diciembre de 1945 y diciembre de 2005 ha sido creado. El conjunto de datos se desarrolló a partir de observaciones en superficie del Banco Nacional de Datos Climáticos (BNDC) del Servicio Nacional de Meteorología y Meteorología de España (AEMET). Se utilizaron 6821 series de datos con más de 10 años de registros, proporcionando un total de 2670 series completas y homogéneas. DATA FROM MANUSCRIPT SHORT-TERM CHANGES IN AROMA-RELATED VOLATILES IN MEAT MODEL: EFFECT OF FAT AND D. HANSENII INOCULATION

Excel file including volatile compounds data in abundance units and in ng/g of sample, calculated odor actcvity values (OAV) and microbial data as log cfu/g of analyzed samples., This study assessed the effect of replacing pork lard with coconut oil and Debaryomyces hansenii inoculation on the biotransformation of amino acids into volatile compounds in a meat model system. Yeast counts, solid-phase microextraction, and gas chromatography/mass spectrometry were used to assess yeast growth and volatile production, respectively. Yeast growth was confirmed until 28 d, although the volatile profile changed until 39 d. Forty-three volatiles were quantified, and their odor activity values (OAVs) were calculated. The presence of fat and yeasts contributed to differences in volatiles. In pork lard models, a delayed formation of lipid-derived aldehyde compounds was observed, whereas in coconut oil models, the generation of acid compounds and their respective esters was enhanced. Yeast activity affected amino acid degradation, which produced an increase in branched-chain aldehydes and alcohols. The aroma profile in the coconut models was influenced by hexanal, acid compounds, and their respective esters, whereas in pork lard models, aroma was affected by methional (musty, potato) and 3-methylbutanal (green, cocoa). The yeast inoculation contributed to the generation of 3-methylbutanoic acid (cheesy) and phenylethyl alcohol (floral).
