A 1973-2008 ARCHIVE OF CLIMATE SURFACES FOR NW MAGHREB

Climate archives are time series. They are used to assess temporal trends of a climate-dependent target variable, and to make climate atlases. A high-resolution gridded dataset with 1728 layers of monthly mean maximum, mean and mean minimum temperatures and precipitation for the NW Maghreb (28ºN-37.3ºN, 12ºW-12ºE, 1-km resolution) from 1973 through 2008 is presented. The surfaces were spatially interpolated by ANUSPLIN, a thin-plate smoothing spline technique approved by the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), from georeferenced climate records drawn from the Global Surface Summary of the Day (GSOD) and the Global Historical Climatology Network-Monthly (GHCN-Monthly version 3) products. Absolute errors for surface temperatures are approximately 0.5ºC for mean and mean minimum temperatures, and peak up to 1.76ºC for mean maximum temperatures in summer months. For precipitation, the mean absolute error ranged from 1.2 to 2.5 mm, but very low summer precipitation caused relative errors of up to 40% in July. The archive successfully captures climate variations associated with large to medium geographic gradients. This includes the main aridity gradient which increases in the S and SE, as well as its breaking points, marked by the Atlas mountain range. Files contain information on flight parameters obtained from lesser kestrel (Falco naumanni) commuting flights or foraging trips (depending on the variable) and the mean values of those parameters per 6-hour interval. Data were collected using high-frequency GPS-dataloggers to track individual lesser kestrels from two breeding colonies in southern Spain. A NEW METHOD FOR NONINVASIVE GENETIC SAMPLING OF SALIVA IN ECOLOGICAL RESEARCH

The dataset includes detail of the experimental session (code, day within session, time since the onset), the experimental subjects (code, sex, weight), types of substrate and bait, and attributes of dog behaviour (chewing time, licking time and handling time). Another set of variables include the amount of saliva collected and the DNA concentration in saliva extracts. Finally, the dataset includes binary variables for species identification and individual identification using two different numbers of microsatellite loci, as well as the number of genotyping attempts needed for individual identification and the match between consensus genotypes and reference genotypes obtained from hair samples, The dataset contains the results of an experiment that measures rates of species identification success and individual identification success using DNA extracted from dog saliva samples. Dog saliva was obtained from different porous materials handled by captive dogs. The item is made of 2 files, of which 1 is the dataset and the other includes a small description of the measured variables.-- Dataset contributed to the Project Carbochange, This dataset gathers discrete measurements of CO2 (pH and alkalinity) and hydrographic variables (salinity, temperature, dissolved oxygen, nitrate, phosphate and silicate) obtained during the cruise P3A22008. carried out in the Strait of Gibraltar from 6 to 12 October 2008, pH was measured spectrophotometrically following the Clayton and Byrne (1993). This method consists on adding a dye solution to the seawater sample, so that the ratio between two absorbances at two different wavelengths is proportional to the sample pH. Alkalinity was measured using an automatic potentiometric titrator Titrando 794 Metrohm, with a Metrohm 6.0232.100 combination glass electrode and a Pt-1000 probe for temperature measurement following the methodology given by Pérez and Fraga (1987). Dissolved oxygen was analyzed following the widely applied Winkler method.
