CACAO FARMERS TUMACO

  • Hernanz, Virginia
  • Quiroga, Sonia
  • Suárez Gálvez, Cristina
  • Aguiño, José Evelio

The replacement of illicit crops with cacao in Colombia's South Pacific region involves more than economic viability. It is closely tied to social-ecological restoration, where local organizations and international NGOs play a key role in providing technical improvements linked to social progress. This region, historically affected by violence and illicit crop cultivation, is critical for post-conflict agreements.

This study examines the factors influencing cacao selling prices, focusing on how access to international markets depends more on support for farmers than monetary value. Adequate infrastructure is essential for producing high-quality dry cacao, crucial for market access. Without it, efforts to substitute illicit crops, along with environmental and social stability, are at risk. Using a spatial econometric model, the study highlights that participation in community councils, supported by NGOs, is vital for reducing environmental risks and ensuring sustainability.

The survey was conducted among farmers in Tumaco, Colombia, as part of a research project aimed at understanding agricultural practices, challenges, and climate change adaptation strategies in the region. The study received approval from the Institutional Review Board (IRB) under protocol number CEID/HU/2020/53, ensuring that all procedures adhered to strict ethical guidelines. The survey was designed to ensure the confidentiality and privacy of participants, with informed consent obtained from all respondents prior to participation. The data collection process followed established protocols to minimize any risks to participants and to ensure that their rights were fully protected throughout the study.

3D SIMULATION OF A HALL-EFFECT THRUSTER NEAR PLUME WITH A SIDE CATHODE

  • Cichocki, Filippo
Raw simulation data of the near plume of an SPT-100 Hall Effect thruster, obtained using the 3D code "EP2PLUS". This makes use of a hybrid particle-in-cell/fluid (PIC/fluid) formulation, and is here used to assess the 3D effects of the neutralizer position on the plasma properties in the near plume. The annular exit plane of the thruster coincides with the z = 0 plane, while the exit plane center-point is at x = y = z = 0. This dataset refers to a simulation with a neutralizer located on one side of the annular channel at x = 0.076 m, y = 0, z = 0. All shown results refer to the final simulation time (1.6 ms) and are time-averaged over periods of 0.2 ms.

ASSEMBLY OF SPECIES CLIMATIC NICHES OF COASTAL COMMUNITIES DOES NOT SHIFT AFTER INVASION

  • Saldaña-López, Asunción
  • Vilà, Montserrat
  • Lloret, Francisco
  • Herrera, José Manuel
  • González-Moreno, Pablo
In this study, we analyzed the effects of invasion by four exotic species with different life strategies on the climatic niche of a plant community located in a coastal area of southwestern Spain. We used ordination methods and examined the community species composition. There was an almost complete overlap in the community ensemble niches between non-invaded and invaded plots for the four invaders. However, the community ensemble niches differed depending on the invasive species and were related to differences in community species similarity between non-invaded and invaded plots. Species assemblages in coastal vegetation did not change their community ensemble climatic niches after invasion by plants with contrasted life-forms. This pattern is likely the result of invasion which did not trigger major changes in species richness and composition, or alternatively because the species that were locally displaced by invasion have been substituted by others with similar climatic requirements.
