DEEPVISION-1 Cruise (29GD20160402) carried out on the Research Vessel García del Cid in 2016, Science, technology ,and society initiative to minimize unwanted catches in european fisheries. The project’s overall objective is to minimise unwanted catches by incentivising the adoption of fishing technologies and practices that reduce pre-harvest mortality and post-harvest discards, while avoiding damage to sensitive marine species and habitats. Experimental fishing will be carried out with the Deep Vision system installed in a fishing gear. The sampling stations are in fishing grounds commercial area of the province of Girona, between Blanes and Palamós. The fishing carried out at different depths between 50 and 600 m approximately, with stations located in the 5 depths In each depth will be carried out a minimum of two tests. It is intended to identify non-target species, size species non-legal and benthic organisms of discarding. The epibenthic community will be sampled with an experimental benthic dredger "2m beam-trawl ", with a rigid opening of 2mx40cm, and a mesh of 1cm for retain the macrofauna. There will be 5-7 catchs 15 ' duration distributed in radials based on the sampling stations with the experimental network. The fishing will standardize a surface unit dragged. The benthic dredger is planned for a depth sensor, Scamnar type, to ensure its positioning in the background. In each sampling station, CTD profiles will be made to characterize the hydrographic situation. Samples of sediment and macroinfauna will be obtained for characterize the habitat the infauna community with a Van Veen dredge (0.1m 2), obtaining 3 dredges in each station. In each station the 10 cm of surface of the sediment column will be sampled .In the shallowest sampling areas (<100m) transects of 30 minutes with an ROV (SPY type) to obtain real-time images of the background. This methodology allows to complement the information of the samples withnon-intrusive samplings for benthic habitats

WINFISH-1_LEG2 CRUISE, RV GARCÍA DEL CID

WINFISH-1_LEG2 Cruise (29GD20170301) carried out on the Research Vessel García del Cid in 2017, To study the influence of the change in the oceanographic conditions generated by the nothern component storms on the spawning of species that reproduce in cold waters. The Gulf of Leon, in the northwestern Mediterranean, is a well-known region where open sea convection processes result in deep water formation due to heat loss during the winter and the evaporation caused for cold and dry winds from the north. Fluctuations in the intensity of this phenomenon are related to the interannual variability and spatial extension of phytoplankton bloom and zooplankton production, feed of fish larvae. Suitable conditions for the development and survival of larvae (high concentrations of food and shelter of their predators) determine subsequent rates of recruitment of fish. The main objective of this project is to elucidate how the environmental conditions associated with the formation of deep water and the vertical mix in winter in the northwestern Mediterranean determine the success of the posting and subsequent recruitment of fish. Two species have been selected: the blue whiting, Micromesistius poutassou, and sardine, Sardina pilchardus, which reproduce in winter in open sea and continental shelf, respectively. Both are abundant, of high commercial interest, and there are historical series of their captures. The specific objectives of the project are: 1) In situ characterization of the environmental conditions in the winter peak, on the platform and in the open sea, after the deep water formation episodes (February-March), and remote monitoring of the evolution of the later phytoplankton bloom; 2) On-site determination of the abundance and distribution (horizontal and vertical) of fish eggs and larvae of target species and other species of fish that are reproduced in the same period; 3) Determination of the trophic interactions between the fish larvae of the target species and the associated planktonic communities under the influence of physical processes. 4) Establish when recruitment of target species takes place and its intensity in relation to winter episodes, the evolution of phytoplankton bloom and the progression of the demographic structure in the following months. 5) Definition of environmental indicators of the cause-effect relationship that explain the interannual variability of the recruitment of the target species and allow the prediction of the catches. The project addresses a multidisciplinary approach and integrates different fields of marine research, physical oceanography, plankton ecology and fisheries

ABIDES-2 Cruise (29GD20170603) carried out on the Research Vessel García del Cid in 2017, To study the transport processes from the submarine canyon flanks of the Catalan margin to deeper areas caused by the bottom trawling activities and evaluate the impact on the sedimentary substrate. To address several of the specific objectives proposed in this project objectives it will be necessary to carry out three separate oceanographic campaigns six months each other to record time series of oceanographic parameters through the anchorage of several anchors equipped with current meters, turbidimeters and sediment traps located inside submarine canyons . In the first of these campaigns, we will proceed to anchoring the anchors, in the second to the maintenance and in the third to the final recovery of the instruments, to cover an annual cycle of record the sediment transport processes and identify the contribution of the resuspension by trawling to sedimentary flows . In each one of these campaigns will be transects of CTD stations to study the seasonal variability of hydrography and formation of nephelloid layers in the column of water and surface sediment cores will be obtained . Sampling will be done both in open slope environments and in the interior of canyons submarines. The oceanographic vessel chosen for these three campaigns is the B / O García del Cid, which has the right characteristics to carry out the tasks planned and the crew is experienced with anchoring maneuvers and recovery of oceanographic anchors.

AMICS CRUISE, RV GARCÍA DEL CID

  • Sala, M. Montserrat
  • CSIC - Unidad de Tecnología Marina (UTM)
AMICS Cruise (29GD20170913) carried out on the Research Vessel García del Cid in 2017, A major objective of ANIMA is the characterization of microorganisms in the air depending on the origin of the aerosols. In ICM we will characterize the microorganisms in anthropogenic aerosols, or in Sahara dust, but the characterization of aerosols of marine origin must be done from areas far from the coast. In the campaign we will analyze biogeochemically the water column, and especially the surface 10 cm and the micro-layer, origin of the marine aerosols. In addition, we will carry out experiments to evaluate the impact of the deposition of anthropogenic aerosols over the open sea, where they usually do not arrive the terrestrial aerosols, and compared with similar experiments on the coast. The main objective of the campaign is the characterization of microorganisms and organic matter present in aerosols of marine origin. However there are several subobjectives: 1) Characterize microorganisms in the atmosphere and see if there is a gradient in its abundance and composition from the coast (dominated by contributions of antropogenic sources) to areas of the open sea, far from the shoreline, where the origin of the microorganisms in the atmosphere is only Marine. 2) Compare the composition of organisms and organic matter of the aerosols with that of the water column (200m surface) and, especially with the top 10 cm and, in case the state of the sea allows it, the microcapa, since that is where marine aerosols originate. 3) Evaluate the impact of anthropogenic aerosols (previously taken in Barcelona) on marine surface communities far from the coastal influence. When the breeze blows from land to sea, these aerosols can be a contribution that stimulates or inhibits the growth of some microorganisms. The results of these two experiments of the campaign will be compared with similar experiments to be carried out on the coast of Barcelona . It is hypothesized that the response to the organic contributions of Anthropogenic type will be smaller and slower in open sea pelagic communities, not usually exposed to these compounds, than in the coastal due to a greater need for response time, either at the level of synthesis of extracellular activities of hydrolysis of certain molecules (i.e. carbohydrates), or by stimulating the growth of certain groups microbials capable of using the new sources of organic matter
