RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN TELOMERE LENGTH AND EARLY GLUTATHIONE LEVELS IN THE ERYTHROCYTES OF ZEBRA FINCHES

Telomeres are repetitive DNA sequences at the end of chromosomes that protect them from degradation. They have been the focus of intense research because short telomeres would predict accelerated ageing and reduced longevity in vertebrates. Oxidative stress is considered a physiological driver of the telomere shortening and, consequently, short lifespan. Among molecules fighting against oxidative stress, glutathione is involved in many antioxidant pathways. Literature supports that oxidative stress may trigger a compensatory “hormetic” response increasing glutathione levels and telomere length. Here we tested the link between total glutathione concentration and telomere length in captive birds (zebra finches; Taeniopygia guttata). Total glutathione levels were experimentally decreased during birds’ growth using a specific inhibitor of glutathione synthesis (buthionine sulfoximine; BSO). We monitored the birds’ reproductive performance in an outdoor aviary during the first months of life and their almost nine-year longevity. We predicted that if glutathione protects telomeres from oxidative stress-induced telomere attrition, a positive correlation between telomere length and glutathione concentration in erythrocytes of control individuals should emerge. Similarly, we predicted that since BSO-treated zebra finches endured higher oxidative stress than controls, they should have also developed shorter telomeres in their erythrocytes and reduced longevity and reproductive outcomes. CHECKLIST OF THE VASCULAR PLANTS OF RÍO MUNI (EQUATORIAL GUINEA)

Dataset of the Checklist of the Vascular Plants of Río Muni (Equatorial Guinea), An updated checklist of the vascular plants from the continental region of Equatorial Guinea, Río Muni is presented. The catalogue (Appendix 1) is the result of the compilation of identified herbarium specimens (6850), bibliographic references with species records (7985) and online databases (10109 GBIF records and 8897 RAINBIO records). A database of 23517 georeferenced vascular plant records was prepared by updating the nomenclatural and standardizing the locality names from all these sources. The catalogue comprises 2707 taxa (2598 species, 81 subspecies, and 28 varieties) included in 1020 genera and 178 families. About 90.6% of the taxa are considered native, 1.17% introduced and 5.96% naturalized. The 10 most diverse families are Rubiaceae (294 species), Fabaceae (290), Orchidaceae (168), Poaceae (105), Euphorbiaceae (87), Apocynaceae (85), Cyperaceae (79), Annonaceae (68), Acanthaceae (65 ) and Melastomataceae (61), which comprise 49.22% of the species in Río Muni. Only 11 species can be considered endemic to Río Muni; this low number reflects the absence of natural barriers in the territory. The number of threatened taxa (VU, EN and CR) is 134 (5.02% of the total evaluated), of which 43 are at risk of extinction, being within the categories of Endangered or Critically Endangered. Five species with restricted distribution to the Gulf of Guinea are considered threatened: three Endangered (Grossera angustifolia, Polyscias aequatoguineensis and Rhipidoglossum montealenense), and two Critically Endangered (Asplenium carvalhoanum and Macropodiella uoroensis), thus they should be considered as priority in management plans development and conservation strategies., Peer reviewed

Versión 1.0.0, revisión 1., The Institute of Heritage Sciences (INCIPIT, CSIC) belongs to the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC). INCIPIT is singular in that it focuses on studying cultural heritage as a research problem, regardless of the disciplinary approach. Therefore, it combines being an object-oriented (heritage) and a problem-oriented research institute; its common research problem is the cultural heritage value chain (CHVC), and the genealogy and meaning of the heritagization processes, either past or present, that are embedded in the CHVC. INCIPIT was founded by CSIC in 2010.
