TASMANDRAKE CRUISE, RV HESPÉRIDES

- CSIC - Unidad de Tecnología Marina (UTM)
TASMANDRAKE Cruise (29HE20180111) carried out on the Research Vessel Hespérides in 2018, The general objective of the TASMANDRAKE project is the study of the onset and evolution of the Antarctic Circumpolar Current (ACC). Taking into account the allowed period and that the capabilities of the geophysical equipment on board cannot image the deep structures and sediments, the cruise cannot fulfill the objectives of the TASMANDRAKE Project pertaining to the opening of gateways and onset of the ACC. We have therefore developed and alternative plan for the DRAKE2018 cruise that will allow us to collect mid-penetration to shallow data from the southern Drake-Scotia area (58ºS/62ºS and 60ºW/50ºW) and the South Orkney Shelf (60ºS/63ºS and 50ºW/40ºW). With this kind of capabilities we target those objectives of the TASMANDRAKE Project dealing with: 1) the evolution of the ACC during the Pleistocene and the Holocene; and 2) near-surface structure of continental blocks (i.e., the South Orkney micro-continent and the platform surrounding Elephant Island) and age of the older oceanic crust in Drake Passage. The proposed work is aimed to help land- ocean correlations between the stratigraphy of Seymour/Marambio Island and Ocean Drilling Project Site 696, in order to better understand the break-up and paleogeographic evolution of these continental blocks. The proposed marine surveys will consist in the execution of predefined transects along which geophysical data will be collected. In addition, we expect to collect sediment cores in specific sites, in order to groundtruth seismic facies with sediment information and provide age constrains of the most recent (Quaternary-Pliocene) units

BRAVOSEIS-GALILEO-2018 Cruise (29HE20180217) carried out on the Research Vessel Hespérides in 2018, Bravoseis and Galileo-IHM. Bravoseis: Seismological study of the submarine volcanoes of the Bransfield Strait (Antarctica): geodynamic environment, tectonic activity, local structure and earthquake-volcanic activity. The aim of Galileo-IHM project is to record and study the signal received from the Galileo satellites in high latitude, and more precisely in the Antarctic, where there is more satellites available. This is the third survey of this project that ends in 2018. The main interest is focused in the Public Regulated Service (PRS) although the Open Service (OS) signal was observed too

RETRO-ERZ CRUISE, RV HESPÉRIDES
- Pelegrí, Josep Lluís
- CSIC - Unidad de Tecnología Marina (UTM)
RETRO-ERZ Cruise (29HE20180426) carried out on the Research Vessel Hespérides in 2018, The main objective of this cruise was to study in detail the area of interaction between the western border current NBC (North Brazil Current) and the zonal current EUC (Equatorial UnderCurrent). Traffic maps acquired from numeric models and dynamic height satellite images helped locate the retroflection of NBC and the origin of the EUC. The region was sampled by the SeaSoar CTD undolutor, CTD + Rosette + LADCP and the microstructure profiler. The dynamic field of the study area was observed through the ADCP, distribution of the currents at 80 meters depth

- CSIC - Unidad de Tecnología Marina (UTM)
EXPLOSEA-1 Cruise (29HE20190214) carried out on the Research Vessel Hespérides in 2019, The objective of the EXPLOSEA 1 cruise is the exploration and multidisciplinary research of submarine hydrothermal vents of low to high temperature in the Atlantic mid-ocean ridge, to the north of the Azores Islands and in the Azores Islands. The survey will address the exploration and characterizations of the venting sites including the water column, the sediments and rocks that host the hydrothermal activity and the associated mineralizations. This cruise is part of the “Exploration of submarine hydrothermal vents and associated mineral deposits and geobio-systems (EXPLOSEA)” project (CTM2016–75947-R)

- Pérez, Fiz F.
- CSIC - Unidad de Tecnología Marina (UTM)
FICARAM-XVIII Cruise (29HE20190406) carried out on the Research Vessel Hespérides in 2019, The general objective of the FICARAM-XVIII cruise is to assess the climate change monitoring the keys variables. Firstly, we will investigated the temporal evolution of the anthropogenic carbon storage and the ocean acidification, and evaluate the CO2 absorption capacity in the South Atlantic region and the Atlantic Equatorial zone. Secondly, the changes in the surface and in the main thermocline of thermohaline properties and circulation. Thirty, the changes in the biological and biogeochemical mechanisms that hinder total dissolved organic carbon (DOC) remineralisation in marine systems, taking a multidisciplinary perspective and applying many different approaches

POWELL-2020 CRUISE, RV HESPÉRIDES
- Escutia, Carlota
- CSIC - Unidad de Tecnología Marina (UTM)
POWELL-2020 Cruise (29HE20200109) carried out on the Research Vessel Hespérides in 2020, The main goal of the POWELL: Is targets the Powell Basin and the South Orkney Microcontinent (SOM) where there is very little information. However, to understand their deep structure is key in the development of the southern Scotia oceanic basins. The proposed cruise includes collection of data to be related with ODP site 696, which is studies in the frame of TASDRACC project. Site 696 will allow to better understand the timing of the events recorded in the seismic profiles and the seismic data will allow us to extend regionally the results obtained from site 696, to the SOM, the Powell Basin and the southern continental margin of the Drake Passage. In this cruise we are expecting to collect: 1) EM122 multi beam bathymetry data; 2) parametric echo-sounder (TOPAS) profiles, 3) multichannel seismic reflection profiles, 4) magnetic data, 5) gravimetric data, 6) gravity cores, and 7) CTDs

BRAVOSEIS-3 CRUISE, RV HESPÉRIDES

- CSIC - Unidad de Tecnología Marina (UTM)
BRAVOSEIS-3 Cruise (29HE20200207) carried out on the Research Vessel Hespérides in 2020, The BRAVOSEIS project investigates the geodynamic environment, structure and dynamics of submarine volcanoes in the Bransfield Strait, Antarctica. It is based on the analysis of tectonic and volcanic earthquakes recorded by a dense, amphybious seismic network composed of broadband seismometers, OBS, and hydrophones, deployed between 2018 and 2020. Aditionally, we perform marine seismology and geophysics profiles across the rift and main volcanic zones. The recorded data will be analyzed using state of the art techniques to understand the crustal structure and tectonic regime in the South Shetland Islands region and elucidate among competing theories, to image the location and extent of magmatic reservoirs, and to address the current activity of submarine volcanic centers along the Bransfield Rift
