DATASET OF AUTONOMIC NERVOUS SYSTEM MODULATION IN BRUXISM PATIENTS THROUGH VISCERAL MANUAL THERAPY

VISCERAL MANUAL THERAPY IN BRUXISM PATIENTS

Tipo de dataset: Bases de datos, Bruxism is a repetitive activity in the masticatory muscles characterised by clenching or grinding of the teeth and/or stiffening or thrusting of the mandible, associated with dysregulation of autonomic nervous system activity and with changes in muscle tone and pressure pain threshold. Visceral manual therapy (VMT) has shown effects on vagal tone and autonomic nervous system modulation; however, its impact on patients with bruxism has not been studied. This study evaluated the effects of VMT on the autonomic nervous system in individuals with bruxism and whether these effects are accompanied by changes in muscle tone and pressure pain threshold of the masticatory muscles., [Methods:] A single-blind randomized clinical trial was conducted with 24 subjects diagnosed with “probable bruxism.” Participants were divided into an experimental group, which received VMT applied to the epigastric region, and a control group, which received a placebo technique. Variables measured included heart rate variability (HRV), normal-to-normal interval (SDNN), root mean square differences of successive normal-to-normal intervals (RMSSD), myotonometry of the masseter muscles and pressure pain threshold (PPT) measured at C4, masseter, and temporalis muscles. A repeated-measures ANOVA was used to analyze the effects of the intervention., [Results:] A significant time × group interaction was observed in HRV-SDNN (p = 0.04, η² = 0.12), suggesting a positive effect of VMT on autonomic regulation. Although HRV-RMSSD did not show long-term changes, significant variations were observed during the first session. No relevant changes were found in myotonometry, while PPT results showed hypoalgesic effects at C4 in the second measurement (p = 0.049, η² = 0.16) and at the left temporalis muscle in the first measurement (p = 0.01, η² = 0.07)., [Conclusion:] VMT appears to modulate vagal tone and improve sympathovagal balance in patients with bruxism, although no significant changes were observed in muscle tone or in most PPT variables. However, the localized hypoalgesic response at C4 and the left temporalis muscle suggests a potential pain-modulating effect. Further studies are needed to clarify the clinical relevance of these effects and their potential application in the management of bruxism., Peer reviewed

  • Tierra Sánchez, María
  • Castañeda del Álamo, Carmen
  • Conesa, Josep Antoni
  • Pedrol, Joan
  • Juárez-Escario, Alejandro
The dataset included 1 compressed folder: “2006_Habitat_Saladas_Alcañiz-Calanda.zip”. The folder comprises one GIS file generated in ArcGIS v.10.8 (“2006_Habitats_Saladas_Alcañiz-Calanda”). The shape is based on the information generated in the 2006 fieldwork and on the CORINE legend of the List of Habitats of Aragon (LHA) (Benito Alonso, 2011). Also, we included the natural habitat types of community interest (HIC) listed in Annex I of the Habitats Directive (92/43/EEC). The explanation of the attribute table is included in the document ‘Explanation.docx’ with the translation of the habitats described in Spanish and English of LHA and HIC. This shape presents two legend layers according to the presence of LHA (“2006_Habitats_Saladas_Alcañiz-Calanda_LHA.lyr”) and HIC (“2006_Habitats_Saladas_Alcañiz-Calanda_HIC.lyr”) in the majority habitat of each polygon. The abovementioned geographic layers are map projected in the European Datum ETRS89/UTM zone 30N., We presented the information of mapping habitat generated in the 2006 fieldwork. The studied wetland is the Saladas of Alcañiz-Calanda, catalogued in the Natura 2000 European Network, under the European Directives Birds (2009/147/EC) and Habitats (92/43/EEC)., The data presented here are a result of the research projects ISABEL, funded by MCIN/AEI/10.13039/501100011033 and by “ERDF A way of making Europe” and Instituto de Estudios Turolenses (IET) through the call for I+D+I Projects - EIT 2025., Peer reviewed

The dataset includes an Excel spreadsheet with the soil data and a zip folder with the geomorphological map. The Excel file “SoilProfile_Chiprana.xlsx” is organized in four sheets: the Sheet #1 “Notes” has comments on laboratory methodologies; the Sheet #2 “Site description” includes the introductory field description of the profile site together with date and location; the Sheet #3, “Soil profile description” contains the detailed horizon descriptions; the Sheet #4 “Soil analysis” comprises the laboratory results of the physical and chemical analysis of 28 soil samples. The methodology for describing the sites and soils are based on Schoeneberger et al. (2012) and SINEDARES (C.B.D.S.A., 1983), and Soil Taxonomy (Soil Survey Staff, 2022). The compressed folder “SoilPhotographs.zip” includes photos of the soil profiles. The compressed folder “Geomorphology_Chiprana.zip” includes three vector datasets, i.e. the shape of polygons “2024_carto_chi_polygon”, the shape of polylines “2024_carto_chi_line”, and the shape of points “Profile&OSLdating_chi_point” with the location of the soil profile and dating samples. The three geographic layers are projected in European Datum ETRS89/UTM zone 30N, and include the five components necessary for visualization in a Geographic Information System. The source of the geomorphological map is the stereoscopic photointerpretation of the USAF aerial photographs (1956-1957) at 1:33000 scale., The “Salada de Chiprana” (41°15'N, 00°12'E) is a Nature Reserve in the semiarid central Ebro Basin (Aragón region) and the only permanent hypersaline lake in Western Europe.
