Human-transformed residuals, especially those derived from human waste (dumps), farmland and livestock are involved in the emergence of antibiotic-resistant bacteria (ARB) in the environment. Wildlife can act as vectors of ARB dispersal through different environments, but also as sentinels to detect the early spread and determine ARB sources. The development of integrated monitoring programs focused on wildlife would help to anticipate the risks of ARB to humans and livestock. We used the yellow-legged gull (Larus michahellis) as a model species to investigate and monitor the spatial patterns of ARB dispersal across an extensive farmland region located in north-eastern Spain (Lleida). By integrating GPS tracking data and ARB clinical testing for 26 individuals within a network analysis framework, we modelled the risk of spatial pathogen spread through faeces during the bacteria-transmission latency period (16 days after sample collection). Additionally, we created a connectivity network to determine the main sources of ARB in the area, focusing on three main habitats of special risk for infection: dumps, livestock facilities and irrigation ponds. Seven individuals were infected by Escherichia coli, with one also co-infected with Listeria monocytogenes and Salmonella spp. Potential pathogen dispersal distances ranged from 1.13 km to 23.13 km from the breeding colony. Our network analyses revealed 54 main nodes (i.e., high-risk habitats recurrently visited by tracked gulls) and 1,182 links among them. Our findings revealed a high degree of connectivity between the breeding area, located in a shallow lake and nearby dumps, highlighting them as significant contributors to ARB dispersal. The integration of GPS data, pathogen testing and network analyses can shed further light on pathogen dynamics by creating spatial risk maps and identifying ARB sources. In combination with complementary molecular epidemiology techniques within a One Health framework, our approach can emerge as an important tool for monitoring ARB dynamics within highly human-transformed ecosystems. This may empower managers for the development of targeted ARB monitoring programmes and effective mitigation strategies, ultimately improving both animal and public health., This study is part of the Intramural CSIC Project “Opportunistic gulls as sentinel species to monitor urban marine ecosystems”. Infraestructures de la Generalitat de Catalunya S.A.U. funded some of the GPS devices. VMV was supported by Juan de la Cierva fellowship from the Spanish Government (JDC2022-049638-I)., Peer reviewed

Location: 46.283801N, 34.810924S, 22.137451E, -6.514893W, Early-life stages play a key role in the spatio-temporal dynamics of marine populations due to their highly dispersive properties, their sensitivities to environmental factors and their influences on juveniles’ replenishment. However, these stages are difficult to monitor, so that in-situ observations are scarce and disparate, preventing a good understanding of the control they exert on population dynamics.
The Mediterranean coastlines have been highly surveyed during the last decades in different sub-regions; yet no effort was made to assemble observations originating from different research projects and countries. Moreover, this sea has been exploited for centuries and is now recognized as a climate-change hotspot, so that it represents an ideal laboratory to address the role of anthropogenic pressures on marine populations. To advance our knowledge, we build an exhaustive compilation of historical data collected over the past decades up to present. From spawning to settlement, it evaluates both egg and larval stages of coastal fishes characterized by bipartite life cycles.
This compilation gathers 44 datasets from North-Western Mediterranean countries (including coastlines of Spain, France, Italy, Croatia and Montenegro) over the last three decades (1993-2021) originating from 48 data providers. We consider direct and indirect observations of early-life stages such as otoliths’ data, datasets of settlers and juveniles sampled by underwater visual census, shore seine, hand-nets or light-traps, as well as fish eggs and larvae sampled with plankton nets.
All those types of data are harmonized into a uniform dataset that informs on the periods and locations of spawning and settlement. While some sampling techniques directly provide the variables of interests, other methods require a-posteriori estimations based on growth models from the Dynamic Energy Budget (DEB) theory, using taxon-dependent parameters available in the online Add-my-Pet database. Finally, the complete database consists in several taxon, each of them being associated with dates of both spawning and settlement, as well as other information such as the pelagic larval duration, measures of uncertainties and sampling characteristics (location, depth, etc).
Statistical analyses of the consolidated database describe the overall coverage of sampling and evaluate the sampling gaps over space and time in order to guide future sampling efforts. In fact, sampling mainly occurs around marine reserves and from May to October. The general coverage of spawning and settlement is then assessed, looking at the differences between observed data (same distribution as sampling) and back-calculated data (nearly uniformly distributed over the year). Moreover, the overall taxa distribution is described, mainly represented by Sparidae. Thus, this database informs early-life traits and their variability for different coastal fish taxa in the North-Western Mediterranean in order to document their evolution in a changing world. Indeed, this database will be publicly available to help undertake future connectivity and climatic studies., The authors acknowledge support from Région Sud for M.D.S.'s PhD grant and co-funding by Port-Cros National Park through a project supported by the Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation., Peer reviewed

The dataset includes data on particle characterization of debris collected from wear-corrosion tests and blood analysis from rats after 30 days of inoculation. Particle size distribution of the debris was measured using a MasterSizer 3000 with laser diffraction technology. This device features a red He-Ne laser (wavelength: 632.8 nm), a blue LED laser (wavelength: 470 nm), and a Hydro SV small volume dispersion unit with stirring. Measurements were taken with laser obscuration set between 3% and 15%, and sample dispersion was achieved at 1200 rpm. Two debris samples were analyzed, each with three measurements. The dataset contains six files, each with two columns labeled "size" and "volume."Blood analysis was conducted prior to euthanizing the animals in a CO2 chamber, with 1.5 mL of intracardiac blood extracted. Serum samples were prepared by centrifugation at 3,000 x g for 15 minutes, then separated and stored in 1.5 mL Eppendorf tubes in a cold chamber for transport to a laboratory. Hematological analysis was performed by UNILABS (Madrid, Spain) using a Sysmex Kx-21n hematology autoanalyzer (Sysmex Corporation, Kobe, Japan). The dataset file consists of 21 columns, detailing results by treatment group (Serum control, Hyaluronic acid, and Graphene) and particle concentrations (0.63 mg/ml, 1.83 mg/ml, 1.65 mg/ml, and 2.35 mg/ml). Hematological parameters in the dataset include hemoglobin (Hgb), hematocrit (Hct), white blood cell (WBC) count, red blood cell (RBC) count, mean corpuscular volume (MCV), mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration (MCHC), and platelet (PLT) count. Biochemical parameters measured in serum samples are creatinine (Crea), aspartate aminotransferase (AST), alanine aminotransferase (ALT), lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), total protein (TP), triglycerides (TG), and cholesterol (CHO). Coagulation parameters include prothrombin time (PT), thromboplastin time (TT), and fibrinogen (F)., [EN] This is the experimental dataset used in the paper "Hematological response to particle debris generated during wear–corrosion processes of CoCr surfaces modified with graphene oxide and hyaluronic acid for joint prostheses". The paper includes the results of the potential biological responses and consequences of wear-corrosion processes associated with CoCr surfaces modified with graphene oxide and hyaluronic acid (CoCr-GO-HA), through in vitro (macrophage cultures) and in vivo (rat models) assays. Once the graphene oxide functionalized with hyaluronic acid was deposited on CoCr surfaces, wear-corrosion tests were performed by applying a 5N load at a rotational speed of 120 rpm over 30,000 m (682,000 cycles) in an aqueous solution of 3 g/L hyaluronic acid (HA), continuously recirculated during the experiment. The generated particles were collected and redispersed in 0.9% NaCl at concentrations of 0.63 mg/mL, 1.65 mg/mL, 1.83 mg/mL, and 2.35 mg/mL. The particles were intra-articularly injected into the knees of rats. This dataset includes the results of the wear particle characterization and the hematological analysis and biochemical parameters, 30 days after intra-articular knee injection in rats.
