License Plate Detection based on Genetic Neural Networks, Morphology, and Active Contours

This paper describes a new method for License Plate Detection based on Genetic Neural Networks, Morphology, and Active Contours. Given an image is divided into several virtual regions sized 10×10 pixels, applying several performance algorithms within each virtual region, algorithms such as edge detection, histograms, and binary thresholding, etc. These results are used as inputs for a Genetic Neural Network, which provides the initial selection for the probable situation of the license plate. Further refinement is applied using active contours to fit the output tightly to the license plate. With a small and well–chosen subset of images, the system is able to deal with a large variety of images with real–world characteristics obtaining great precision in the detection. The effectiveness for the proposed method is very high (97%). This method will be the first stage of a surveillance system which takes into account not only the actual license plate but also the model of the car to determine if a car should be taken as a threat.

Teaching microprocessors design using FPGAs

Microprocessors is a typical subject within the Computer Architecture field of scope. It is quite common to use simulators in practical sessions, due to the complexity of its contents. In this paper a new methodology based on practical sessions with real devices and chips is proposed. Simple designs of microprocessors are exposed to the students at the beginning, rising the complexity gradually toward a final design with a multiprocessor integrated in a single FPGA chip. Finally, assessment results are shown.

En el trabajo planteamos los mapas mentales como una técnica que potencia la capacidad de aprender a aprender y aprender a pensar del alumnado de magisterio dentro de un aprendizaje holístico o aprendizaje con todo el cerebro. El trabajo queda estructurado, en primer lugar, con un marco teórico en el que se clarifica conceptualmente la técnica del Mapa Mental. A continuación, presentamos el desarrollo del proceso de investigación desde la intencionalidad a la recogida de datos y su tratamiento con el programa Atlas.ti , para obtener los resultados tanto descriptivos como interpretativos, expuestos en tablas de frecuencia y en redes relacionales, por medio de un análisis cualitativo, In this article we establish mind maps as a technique that boosts the “Learning to learn” and “Learning to think” abilities of undergraduate Teacher Training students within a holistic learning or whole brain learning process. Firstly, a theoretical framework is proposed which conceptually clarifies the Mind Map technique. Next, we present the research process covering the aims and the steps in data compilation and processing. Data were processed with Atlas.ti software to obtain descriptive and interpretative results, which are shown in frequency tables and in relational networks as a result of a qualitative analysis of the findings

La intervención traductora ante la vaguedad semántica del léxico: reflexiones a partir de un ejemplo francés-español

Les unités lexicales caractérisées par leur imprécision sémantique exigent un effort interprétatif considérable qui rend difficile sa traduction dans d’autres langues. Le large éventail de solutions que les traducteurs utilisent pour rendre compte des nuances de l’original vient renforcer cette idée. À partir de l’étude de l’unité lexique dérapage dans un corpus de textes spécialisés français et leurs traductions en espagnol, le travail propose une réflexion générale sur l’activité interprétative du traducteur conçue comme un procès de construction de sens., Lexical units with fuzzy semantic borders require a considerable interpretative effort which makes difficult its translation into other languages. The great number of differently nuanced interpretations they offer is clear proof of this interpretative difficulty. Taking as a starting point the contrastive study of the French lexical unit dérapage and its Spanish translations in a corpus comprising specialized texts, the paper puts forward a general reflection on the interpretative activity carried out by the translator, understood as a construction of meaning process.
