Fauna of the Mediterranean Hydrozoa, Fauna de hidrozoos del Mediterráneo

[EN] This study provides a systematic account of the hydrozoan species collected up to now in the Mediterranean Sea. All species are described, illustrated and information on morphology and distribution is given for all of them. This work is the most complete fauna of hydrozoans made in the Mediterranean. The fauna includes planktonic hydromedusae, benthic polyps stages and the siphonophores. The Hydrozoa are taken as an example of inconspicuous taxa whose knowledge has greatly progressed in the last decades due to the scientific research of some specialists in the Mediterranean area. The number of species recorded in the Mediterranean almost doubled in the last thirty years and the number of new records is still increasing. The 457 species recorded in this study represent the 12% of the world known species. The fauna is completed with classification keys and a glossary of terms with the main purpose of facilitating the identification of all Meditrranean hydrozoan species, [ES] Este estudio proporciona una relación sistemática de las especies de hidrozoos conocidas hasta la actualidad en el mar Mediterráneo. Se describen e ilustran todas las especies de las cuales se ofrece información sobre su morfología y distribución. Este trabajo es la fauna mas completa de hidrozoos hecha en el Mediterráneo. Esta fauna incluye las hidromedusas planctónicas, los estadios bentónicos de pólipos y los sifonóforos. Los Hydrozoa se han tomado como un ejemplo de taxones inconspicuos cuyo conocimiento ha progresado enormemente durante las últimas décadas gracias a la investigación de algunos especialistas en el area mediterránea. El número de especies citadas en el Mediterráneo se ha casi doblado en los últimos treinta años y el número de nuevos registros sigue incrementándose. Las 457 especies referenciadas en este estudio representan el 12% del total mundial de especies. Science and technology in the UK: 2006 census

56 pages, 10 tables, 44 figures, Every year, the UK spends £21 billion in the creation of new knowledge – via the science system in universities, research institutes and companies. This investment forms part of an estimated £600 billion, which is spent by OECD countries around the world, involving some 3 million researchers. Not surprisingly, every country asks the same questions – what are we getting out of this investment? And is it enough? To shed some light on the current situation in the UK, this report provides a census of the UK’s science and technology system. It draws on publicly available data to review the performance of the UK science and technology system, both in terms of the investments made in the system and the outputs it delivers. Inevitably the census provides a partial picture of the UK’s science base. The available data covers some of the activities being undertaken, but by no means all of them. Even with this caveat, the data that are available – particularly when viewed in terms of long-term trends – offer some interesting insights into the relative performance of the UK. Key among these insights are: ■ The UK has been under-investing in research and development relative to comparator countries for over 20 years, both in terms of total and per capita R&D investment. Business and government are the two R&D investing sectors largely responsible for this under-investment. ■ The UK remains one of the leading countries in terms of scientific production. However, the UK’s performance varies significantly across academic disciplines. The UK performs outstandingly in most biology and bio-medical related fields, but its performance in chemistry, engineering and physics is relatively weak. ■ In chemistry and physics, the UK’s share of world publications has decreased over the period 1996-2003, and it is ranked below many comparator countries2 in terms of the relative citation index. In engineering the UK also shows a decreasing share of world publications over the period 1996-2003, and it is the third lowest in terms of relative citation index (above only Japan and Finland amongst our set of comparator countries). ■ The UK has under-performed throughout the 1980s and 1990s – relative to the comparator countries – in terms of patenting, both per capita and per unit of investment (i.e. business expenditures on R&D). The UK’s underperformance is particularly marked relative to Germany, Japan and several small, high-tech countries. ■ Finally, the UK remains comparatively well connected to the international science and technology system, as shown by the share of R&D investment and patenting activities conducted abroad by UK companies, and the high proportion of R&D investment in the UK by non-UK owned companies. These findings have several implications for the UK, in terms of the performance of the science and technology system. ■ While the UK has traditionally been one of the world’s leading countries in terms of the generation of scientific knowledge, it is questionable whether this position can be sustained given the long-term trends with regard to R&D investment and scientific performance. ■ This question of sustainability becomes even more significant in light of the emergence of new centres of knowledge creation – i.e. referred to as the newcomer countries in this study. One could view these ‘newcomer countries’ as new competitors in terms of the production of scientific and technological knowledge. ■ However, scientific competition may not be the right way to think about the challenge posed by the newcomer countries. If we adopt the perspective of an open science and innovation system, the emergence of new centres of knowledge production should be seen as an opportunity for scientific collaboration. In this sense, the challenge for the UK is how to ensure it can engage in the global knowledge production process and develop the countries capacity to absorb relevant knowledge., Peer reviewed

Siyāsa: estudio arqueológico del despoblado andalusí (ss. XI-XIII)

Fairchild Ruggles (Universidad de Illinois, EE.UU.)., Recientemente se ha publicado este volumen, segunda edición del que ya apareció en 2005 integrado en una colección sobre Historia de Cieza (Murcia), en el que se recopilan los resultados de las investigaciones arqueológicas en el yacimiento andalusí de Siyâsa, que se remontan a la década de 1980. Se trata de la culminación de la amplia bibliografía generada por los investigadores Julio Navarro y Pedro Jiménez sobre este importante yacimiento andalusí de la Región de Murcia., La presente obra contiene una sistematización, recopilación y puesta al día de los datos aportados por las campañas de excavaciones en este yacimiento realizadas por los autores, ambos investigadores de la Escuela de Estudios Árabes (CSIC, Granada), yacimiento de primer orden en el ámbito andalusí., Aunque la existencia del despoblado del Cerro del Castillo era conocida con anterioridad, en 1980 no se impidió su destrucción parcial por trabajos de aterrazamiento con el fin de repoblar la ladera sur del cerro. Esta circunstancia puso al descubierto numerosos arcos y yeserías, que decoraban las viviendas del lugar. El descubrimiento en 1981 de valiosos restos cerámicos impulsó que en septiembre se iniciase una primera intervención arqueológica, con el apoyo del ayuntamiento de Cieza, que prosiguió en 1982. La primera campaña oficial de excavaciones comenzó ya en 1983. Desde entonces, el yacimiento de Siyâsa ha proporcionado inestimables datos urbanísticos y arquitectónicos que se han incorporado al acervo de nuestro conocimiento de la vida cotidiana en al-Andalus en los siglos XII y XIII. También el Arte toma un papel relevante en su estudio, ya que las yeserías se han revelado como un elemento cronométrico tan relevante como la propia cerámica, en base a la sucesión de estilos bien definidos en su decoración., El libro que presentamos tiene, por tanto, el importante valor de su carácter necesariamente interdisciplinar, como no podía ser de otra forma en estudios sobre la Edad Media, ya que en él accedemos al conocimiento histórico de Cieza desde datos arqueológicos, artísticos, geográficos y etnohistóricos, en aras del mayor rigor científico., Peer reviewed

Pratylenchus (nematoda: pratylenchidae): diagnosis, biology pathogenicity and management

Root-lesion nematodes of the genus Pratylenchus are recognised worldwide as one of the major constraints of crops of primary economic importance, including banana, cereals, coffee, corn, legumes, peanut, potato and many fruits. Pratylenchus species rank second only to rootknot and cyst nematodes as having greatest economic impact on crops worldwide. This is not only due to their wide host range, but also to their distribution in almost every cool, temperate and tropical environment. They are migratory endoparasites that cause severe root damage on a wide range of crops whilst feeding primarily in the cortical parenchyma. The genus Pratylenchus comprises 68 nominal species of worldwide distribution that parasitise a wide variety of plants. Nevertheless, the majority of economic damage to herbaceous, vegetables and fruit crops throughout the world is attributable to a dozen of the most common species, including P. brachyurus in corn, cotton, peanut, pineapple, potato and tobacco; P. coffeae in coffee, citrus, sugarcane and tea; P. goodeyi in banana; P. neglectus in cereals and legumes; P. penetrans in grasses, forages, fruit trees and strawberries; P. pratensis in cereals, grasses, ornamentals and strawberries; P. scribneri in potato, soybean and strawberries; P. thornei in cereals and legumes; P. vulnus in pome and stone fruit trees, ornamentals and roses; and P. zeae which parasitises corn, rice, sugarcane and wheat. The book comprises ten chapters and presents summarised and specialised information on various aspects of the root-lesion nematodes belonging to the genus Pratylenchus. Chapter 1 describes the importance of Pratylenchus species in agricultural crops and their world distribution. Chapter 2 presents general morphology and diagnostic traits of Pratylenchus spp. and their usefulness in taxonomy. This chapter also includes morphometric and cluster analyses to separate groups of species in order to facilitate identification. Chapter 3 analyses the taxonomy and systematic position of Pratylenchus and related genera, including a list of nominal species. Chapter 4 provides complete descriptions and morphometrics of all populations characterised for each species, as well as their world distribution. Chapter 5 includes comprehensive tabular and dichotomous keys for species identification. Whilst recognising the complexity of creating a system to identify such a large number of species, we are nevertheless confident that, by using both systems, the reader has the necessary information to identify the species of Pratylenchus with which they are dealing. Chapter 6 summarises new diagnostic technologies based on biochemical and molecular analyses, which are becoming increasingly important for practical identifications. Chapter 7 includes numerous aspects of the biology of Pratylenchus spp., life cycle, epidemiology and ecology. Chapter 8 comprises a complete revision of the host-parasite relationships between Pratylenchus spp. and herbaceous and woody plants. Chapter 9 presents the pathogenicity and damage of Pratylenchus spp. to crops, as well as their interactions with beneficial and pathogenic fungi and other nematodes. Finally, Chapter 10 illustrates different management strategies for Pratylenchus species, including crop rotation, host-plant resistance, chemical control, soil solarisation and biological control by means of nematophagous fungi, entomopathogenic nematodes, the hyperparasitic bacterium Pasteuria penetrans and nematicidal plants., Peer reviewed
