CRYSTAL STRUCTURE OF (1,3-DI-TERT-BUTYL- Η 5-CYCLO­PENTA­DIEN­YL)TRI­METHYL­HAFNIUM(IV)

The mol­ecule of the title organometallic hafnium(IV) com­pound, [Hf(CH3) 3(C 13H 21)] or [HfMe3( η 5-C 5H 3-1,3- tBu 2)], adopts the classical three-legged piano-stool geometry for mono­cyclo­penta­dienylhafnium(IV) derivatives with the three methyl groups bonded to the Hf(IV) atom at the legs. The C atoms of the two tert-butyl group bonded to the cyclo­penta­dienyl (Cp) ring are 0.132 (5) and 0.154 (6) Å above the Cp least-squares plane. There are no significant inter­molecular inter­actions present between the mol­ecules in the crystal structure.

GLOBAL EFFECTS OF NON-NATIVE TREE SPECIES ON MULTIPLE ECOSYSTEM SERVICES

Non-native tree (NNT) species have been transported worldwide to create or enhance services that are fundamental for human well-being, such as timber provision, erosion control or ornamental value; yet NNTs can also produce undesired effects, such as fire proneness or pollen allergenicity. Despite the variety of effects that NNTs have on multiple ecosystem services, a global quantitative assessment of their costs and benefits is still lacking. Such information is critical for decision-making, management and sustainable exploitation of NNTs. We present here a global assessment of NNT effects on the three main categories of ecosystem services, including regulating (RES), provisioning (PES) and cultural services (CES), and on an ecosystem disservice (EDS), i.e. pollen allergenicity. By searching the scientific literature, country forestry reports, and social media, we compiled a global data set of 1683 case studies from over 125 NNT species, covering 44 countries, all continents but Antarctica, and seven biomes. Using different meta-analysis techniques, we found that, while NNTs increase most RES (e.g. climate regulation, soil erosion control, fertility and formation), they decrease PES (e.g. NNTs contribute less than native trees to global timber provision). Also, they have different effects on CES (e.g. increase aesthetic values but decrease scientific interest), and no effect on the EDS considered. NNT effects on each ecosystem (dis)service showed a strong context dependency, varying across NNT types, biomes and socio-economic conditions. For instance, some RES are increased more by NNTs able to fix atmospheric nitrogen, and when the ecosystem is located in low-latitude biomes; some CES are increased more by NNTs in less-wealthy countries or in countries with higher gross domestic products. The effects of NNTs on several ecosystem (dis)services exhibited some synergies (e.g. among soil fertility, soil formation and climate regulation or between aesthetic values and pollen allergenicity), but also trade-offs (e.g. between fire regulation and soil erosion control). Our analyses provide a quantitative understanding of the complex synergies, trade-offs and context dependencies involved for the effects of NNTs that is essential for attaining a sustained provision of ecosystem services.

In support of the IPCC, the ESA Climate Change Initiative (CCI) programme comprises the participation of different projects, each focusing on the production of global coverage of an Essential Climate Variable (ECV). The ECV Fire Disturbance (Fire_cci) provides validated, error-characterised, global and regional data sets of burned areas (BA) derived from existing satellite observations. The Fire_cci BA products consist of a Pixel and Grid product addressing the needs and requirements of climate, atmospheric and ecosystem scientists and researchers supporting their modelling efforts. Further information on the ESA CCI Programme and a comprehensive documentation on the underlying algorithms, work flow, production system and product validation is publicly accessible on https://www.esa-fire-cci.org/. FireCCIS1SA10 provides burned area (BA) information over a large demonstrator area (LDA) located in tropical South America for the year 2017. It is based on an algorithm that uses Sentinel-1 SAR information, with MODIS hotspots and land cover as auxiliary information, to detect areas that have burned due to wildfires. The product is provided in monthly tiles in geographical coordinates with a spatial resolution of 0.00035932447 degrees (approx. 40 m).

The title polynuclear organometallic titanium(IV) oxide, [{Ti3( η 5-C 5Me 5) 3( μ-O) 4} 2( μ-O)], exhibits two Ti3O 4 cores bridged by an O atom located on a twofold axis. All metal centres present the typical three-legged piano-stool coordination environment, where one site is occupied by a penta­methyl­cyclo­penta­dienyl ligand linked in an η 5-coordination fashion, while three bridging O atoms fill the other three sites.

Co-IPs for proteomic analysis (mass spectrometry) were carried out by incubation of 1 mg of protein lysates with protein G-coated magnetic beads coupled with either the monoclonal antibody P4A4 anti-endoglin (Developmental Studies Hybridoma Bank, The University of Iowa, US) or an isotype-matched (IgG2b) control antibody (Immunostep, Salamanca, Spain). An additional control with protein G magnetic beads in the absence of antibodies was also included. After extensive washing with PBS, immunoprecipitates were then subjected to mass spectrometry analysis.
