The data presented in this paper is supporting the research article “Estimating wind dispersal potential in Ailanthus altissima: The need to consider the three-dimensional structure of samaras” [1]. We analyzed the estimation of samara's wind dispersal potential through a group of morphological variables that succeed in describing the three-dimensional nature of samaras. We present here a dataset containing 8 morphological variables of 200 samaras belonging to 5 different individuals of the invasive tree Ailanthus altissima (Mill.) Swingle. Additionally, we present the average descent velocity of each of the samaras, which was recorded by releasing 5 times each samara under controlled and reproducible conditions. The data set is structured in a single spreadsheet where we also included the samara and the individual identity code of the tree.

10-YEAR WRF SIMULATIONS IN CABAUW (2001-2010)

10 AÑOS DE SIMULACIONES CON WRF EN CABAUW (2001-2010)

  • Jiménez, Pedro
  • Arrillaga Mitxelena, Jon Ander
These data, obtained from numerical simulations from the WRF model, complement a robust observational meteorological database in Cabauw (The Netherlands), spanning a 10-year period (2001-2010). The uploaded data contain the variables used in the analysis of the different atmospheric scales that influence the sea-breeze formation and their frontal characteristics. This study is in press to be published in Journal of the Geophysical Research: Atmospheres, under the title ''Analyzing the Synoptic, Meso and Local Scales Involved in Sea-Breeze Formation and Frontal Characteristics''.

• Mutations affecting crossover frequency and distribution lead to the presence of univalents during meiosis, giving rise to aneuploid gametes and sterility. These mutations may have a different effect after chromosome doubling. The combination of altered ploidy and mutations could be potentially useful to gain new insights into the mechanisms and regulation of meiotic recombination, however, studies using autopolyploid meiotic mutants are scarce. • Here, we have analyzed the cytogenetic consequences in colchicine-induced autotetraploids (colchiploids) from different Arabidopsis mutants with an altered crossover frequency. • We have found that there are three types of mutants: i) mutants in which chiasma frequency is doubled after chromosome duplication (zip4, mus81), as in the control; ii) mutants in which polyploidy leads to higher-than expected increase in chiasma frequency (asy1, mer3, hei10, mlh3); and iii) mutants in which the rise in chiasma frequency produced by the presence of two extra chromosomal sets is less than doubled (msh5, fancm). In addition, the proportion of class I/class II crossovers varies after chromosome duplication in the control. • The results obtained reveal the potential of colchiploid meiotic mutants for better understanding of the function of key proteins during plant meiosis. This is especially relevant considering that most crops are polyploids.

DATA FROM: GERMINATION FITNESS OF TWO TEMPERATE EPIPHYTIC FERNS SHIFTS UNDER INCREASING TEMPERATURES AND FOREST FRAGMENTATION

Ferns are an important component of ecosystems around the world. Studies of the impacts that global changes may have on ferns are scarce, yet emerging studies indicate that some species may be particularly sensitive to climate change. The lack of research in this subject is much more aggravated in the case of epiphytes, and especially those that live under temperate climates. A mathematical model was developed for two temperate epiphytic ferns in order to predict potential impacts on spore germination kinetics, in response to different scenarios of global change, coming from increasing temperature and forest fragmentation. Our results show that an increasing temperature will have a negative impact over the populations of these temperate epiphytic ferns. Under unfragmented forests the germination percentage was comparatively less influenced than in fragmented patches. This study highlight that, in the long term, populations of the studied epiphytic temperate ferns may decline due to climate change. Overall, epiphytic fern communities will suffer changes in diversity, richness and dominance. Our study draws attention to the role of ferns in epiphytic communities of temperate forests, emphasizing the importance of considering these plants in any conservation strategy. Derived from our results, it seems that it would be more practical to focus attention to forest conservation. From a methodological point of view, the model we propose could be easily used to dynamically monitor the status of ecosystems, allowing the quick prediction of possible future scenarios, which is a crucial issue in biodiversity conservation decision-making.
