BACKGROUND: Cultural views of Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), differing healthcare systems and funding mechanisms, and the availability of mental health services can greatly influence the perceptions, diagnosis, and treatment of ADHD. There is, however, lack of information about treatment practice and the treatment decision-making process for ADHD, particularly in non-Western countries. Our study compared characteristics of paediatric patients newly diagnosed with ADHD symptoms who did and who did not initiate treatment, and also examined whether any differences varied by region in Central Europe and East Asia. METHODS: Data were taken from a 1-year prospective, observational study that included 1,068 paediatric patients newly diagnosed with ADHD symptoms. Clinical severity was measured using the Clinical Global Impression-ADHD-Severity (CGI-ADHD-S) scale and the Child Symptom Inventory-4 (CSI-4) checklist. Logistic regression was used to explore patient characteristics associated with treatment initiation (pharmacotherapy and/or psychotherapy) at baseline for each region. RESULTS: A total of 74.3% of patients initiated treatment at baseline (78.3% in Central Europe and 69.9% in East Asia). Of these, 48.8% started with both pharmacotherapy and psychotherapy in Central Europe, and only 17.1% did so in East Asia. The level of clinical severity was highest in the combination treatment group in Central Europe, but was highest in the psychotherapy only group in East Asia. In East Asia, treatment initiation was associated with being older, being male, and having a higher CGI-ADHD-S score. In Central Europe, treatment initiation was associated with parental psychological distress, having a higher CSI-4 score, and not being involved in bullying. CONCLUSIONS: Although factors associated with treatment initiation differed to some extent between Central Europe and East Asia, clinical severity appeared to be one of the most important determinants of treatment initiation in both regions. However, the choice between pharmacotherapy and psychotherapy, either alone or in combination, varied substantially across the regions.

The aim of the present study was to determine the serum cytokine profile and levels of high sensitivity C-reactive protein (hsCRP) in patients with uveitis associated with Behcet's disease (BD) and to compare them with those obtained from healthy control subjects. We determined the serum concentration of interferon-gamma (IFN-gamma), interleukin-1 beta (IL-1 beta), IL-12p70, IL-17A, tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-alpha), and hsCRP in 13 patients with active uveitis associated to BD, 24 inactive BD patients, and 20 controls. In a subgroup of 10 active patients, a second serum sample was obtained when the disease was inactive. Cytokine profiles and hsCRP levels were correlated with disease activity, severity, complications, and visual outcome. Levels of IFN-gamma and TNF-alpha were significantly increased in patients with active uveitis associated to BD compared to controls (P < 0.05). IFN-gamma, TNF-alpha, and hsCRP were significantly higher during active uveitis associated to BD compared to inactive disease (P < 0.05). Furthermore, IL-17A was significantly increased in patients with active BD without pharmacological treatment compared to controls (P < 0.05). No significant correlations were found with specific cytokine profiles and disease severity, visual outcome, or complications. In summary, increased serum levels of IFN-gamma, TNF-alpha, IL-17A, and hsCRP were associated with active uveitis associated with BD and might serve as markers of disease activity.

Disempowering the witch : a patriarchal portrait of the witch in Anne Rice’s ‘The lives of the Mayfair witches’

  • Luque Brugué, Laura
This TFM explores the figure of the witch as a disempowered symbol presented in Anne Rice’s trilogy The Lives of the Mayfair Witches (The Witching Hour, 1990; Lasher, 1993; Taltos, 1994). The witch has recently increased her presence in current cultural manifestations: shows like American Horror Story (2011-) or Salem (2014-) popularized again the witch and made her a trend in today’s popular culture. Of course, her role in history and literature has been largely explored in academia. Contrarily to previous misogynistic interpretations, the 1960s-radical feminist movement W.I.T.C.H (Women’s International Terrorist Conspiracy from Hell) appropriated the witch as a symbol for its fight against patriarchy: the witch became women’s feminist icon. Since then, many feminists see in the witch the embodiment of a strong, powerful, antipatriarchal woman within western culture.

Work on transversal competences in university degrees is a teaching line entirely established since the implementation of the European Credit Transfer System (ECTS). Nevertheless, undergraduate students present shortcomings in the development of some of these competences, especially on collaborative work, time management, oral and writing expression, and on the use of information resources. This paper presents a virtual tool and associated guidelines to enhance the information management during the development of collaborative works, and to facilitate the information availability among the students. Moreover, this tool and the guideline improve the individual monitoring and evaluation of the contributions of the students to the work. The proposal presented in this work belongs to a teaching innovation project carried out in the Earth Sciences Faculty of the Universitat de Barcelona, and implemented in the subjects General Geology (first-year in the Engineering Geology degree, 6 ECTS) and Geochemistry (third-year course in the Geology degree, 9 ECTS).

MWC 656 is the first known Be/black hole (BH) binary system. Be/BH binaries are important in the context of binary system evolution and sources of detectable gravitational waves because they are possible precursors of coalescing neutron star/BH binaries. X-ray observations conducted in 2013 revealed that MWC 656 is a quiescent high-mass X-ray binary (HMXB), opening the possibility to explore X-ray/radio correlations and the accretion/ejection coupling down to low luminosities for BH HMXBs. Here we report on a deep joint Chandra/VLA observation of MWC 656 (and contemporaneous optical data) conducted in 2015 July that has allowed us to unambiguously identify the X-ray counterpart of the source. The X-ray spectrum can be fitted with a power law with Γ ~ 2, providing a flux of sime4 × 10−15 erg cm−2 s−1 in the 0.5-8 keV energy range and a luminosity of LX sime 3 × 1030 erg s−1 at a 2.6 kpc distance. For a 5 M⊙ BH this translates into sime5 × 10−9 LEdd. These results imply that MWC 656 is about 7 times fainter in X-rays than it was two years before and reaches the faintest X-ray luminosities ever detected in stellar-mass BHs. The radio data provide a detection with a peak flux density of 3.5 ± 1.1 μJy beam−1. The obtained X-ray/radio luminosities for this quiescent BH HMXB are fully compatible with those of the X-ray/radio correlations derived from quiescent BH low-mass X-ray binaries. These results show that the accretion/ejection coupling in stellar-mass BHs is independent of the nature of the donor star.

'El yacimiento de Sela (Jordania) La expansión imperial neo-babilónica en el altiplano de Edom a mediados del I milenio a.C.[The Site of Sela (Jordan)]

  • Da Riva, Rocío
The site of as-Sila has been identified with Edomite Sela, frequently mentioned in the Bible. The site was important in the Iron Age (as demonstrated by the presence of many structures and the Neo-Babylonian cuneiform rock-inscription of king Nabonidus, 556-539 BCE), and also during the Nabatean and Roman periods. The survey work at Sela has revealed a very large site with a considerable number of structures related to water, and architectonic structures of varying sizes: rock-cut houses, remains of rock-cut large buildings, towers, etc. A comprehensive study of the site would help us to analyse the relationship between the Neo-Babylonian Empire and the West (Edom) in the context of Nabonidus' Arabian campaigns.

Few-particle systems: An analysis of some strongly correlated states

  • Barberán Falcón, Núria

The analysis of the quantum Hall response of a small system of interacting ultracold bosonic atoms through the variation of its Hall resistivity against the applied gauge magnetic field provides a powerful method to unmask its strongly correlated states in a quite exhaustive way. Within a fixed range of vaues of the magnetic field in the lowest Landau-level regime, where the resistivity displays two succesive plateaux, we identify the implied states as the Pfaffian and the state with filling factor \nu=2/3 in the thermodinamic limit. We fix the conditions to have good observability.

The relationship between the acid-base chemistry and the supramolecular behavior of 5-(4-aminophenyl)-10,15,20-tris(4-sulfonatophenyl)porphyrin in acidic water is reported. A new species exhibiting a prominently red-shifted Q-absorption band at 742 nm is described which is in accordance with a hyperporphyrin-type spectrum of a J-aggregate in water. UV-vis spectroscopy and peak force microscopy reveal that depending on the pH value of the medium the porphyrin self-assembles into two structurally different mesophases which can be reversibly interconverted at will.

The purposes of this study are to demonstrate how it is possible to determinewhich attributes are the most important in the final choices of tourists who use a travel agent brochure as a source of information and how these attributes influence perceived value in a pre-purchase stage. We conduct the study in three phases: (i) a qualitative study, (ii) an experiment using choice-based conjoint analysis by means of a fractional factorial experimental design and (iii) another experiment using a full factorial derived from the same design. Results suggest advertisement size, a hotel's starred rating and price influence perceived value at this stage. The presence of a positive combined effect of price and advertising was found. Implications and directions for future applications are offered, focusing particularly on marketing services.
