EXCLUSION OF MEDITERRANEAN ANT SPECIES ENHANCES BIOLOGICAL CONTROL OF THE INVASIVE MEALYBUG DELOTTOCOCCUS ABERIAE IN CITRUS [DATASET]

  • Plata, Ángel
The experiment was carried out from February 2020 to November 2021 in two Clementine mandarin orchards from Valencian Community (Spain). The orchards were located in Borriol (40°00'45.5"N 0°05'56.3"W 110 m. a.s.l) and Moncófar (39°48'12.1"N 0°09'58.7"W 15 m. a.s.l) and were 1.4 and 1.1 ha, respectively. Both orchards were selected because they had a medium abundance of D. aberiae. Eight replicated blocks were evenly distributed across the two orchards. Each block was divided into paired 4x4 tree plots, one receiving the “ant-allowed” treatment and the other receiving the “ant-excluded” treatment. In ant-excluded plots, sticky barriers were applied to trunks of trees to prevent ants accessing up to the canopy. To do this, the tree trunk was wrapped with Parafilm® 10-30 cm above ground. The wrapped zone was coated with Tad All-Weather® adhesive. The four central trees of each plot were sampled monthly. From each tree, 40 leaves (ten leaves per cardinal direction) and 20 fruits (five fruit per cardinal direction) were visually inspected, and the number of mealybugs, ants and potential predators were identified and counted. The number of ants crossing (both up and down) an imaginary line surrounding the trunk at 30 cm above ground were counted for two minutes. Ants were identified to species and predators identification varied among groups from order (e.g. Araneae) to species (e.g. Rodolia cardinalis). All observations were made between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m., as ant activity in citrus canopies is stable over this period., This dataset is associated to the published paper “Exclusion of Mediterranean ant species enhances biological control of the invasive mealybug Delottococcus aberiae in citrus”. In this paper, the effect of tending ants on the biological control of D. aberiae is evaluated. To do this, we compared: i) the density of D. aberiae, ii) the density of its natural enemies and iii) the damage produced by the mealybug in trees with (control) and without ants (ants excluded with sticky barriers) in two citrus orchards across two consecutive years.

1 file, The Cape Verde Frontal Zone (CVFZ) is a highly dynamic region located in the southern boundary of the Canary Current Eastern Boundary Upwelling Ecosystem. Due to the interaction of the Cape Verde Front with the Mauritanian coastal upwelling, the area features large vertical and horizontal export fluxes of organic matter. Full-depth profiles were recorded during FLUXES I cruise, with four consecutive transects defining a box embracing the giant filament of Cape Blanc and the Cape Verde front. Fifteen levels were sampled in medium and long stations (down to 4000 dbar) and 10 levels in short stations (down to 2000 dbar) where inorganic nutrients (NO3, NO2, Si(OH)4 and PO4), dissolved organic carbon/total dissolved nitrogen (DOC/TDN), and suspended particulate organic carbon and nitrogen (POC and PON) were sampled. Micromolar concentrations of nutrient salts were determined simultaneously by segmented flow analysis in an Alliance Futura autoanalyser. The determination of suspended POC and PON was carried out by high temperature catalytic oxidation at 900 °C in a Perkin Elmer 2400 elemental analyser. DOC and TDN were analysed by high temperature catalytic oxidation at 680 °C with a Shimadzu TOC-V analyser connected in line with a TNM1 measuring unit. Alongside with water samples conductivity, temperature and depth (CTD; SeaBird SBE911 plus), and dissolved oxygen (SeaBird SBE43), fluorescence of chlorophyll (SeaPoint SCF), and turbidity (SeaPoint STM) were measured. CTD conductivity was calibrated with water samples taken from the rosette and analysed on board with a Guildline 8410-A Portasal salinometer. Samples for dissolved oxygen (O2) determination were analysed on board by the Winkler potentiometric method. The chlorophyll (Chl) fluorescence sensor was calibrated with water samples taken at 4 depths in the photic layer which were estimated fluorometrically by means of a Turner Designs bench fluorometer 10-AU, Horizon 2020 (H2020), grant/award no. 817806: Sustainable management of mesopelagic resources; Ministerio de Ciencia e Innovación (MICINN), grant/award no. DIVING INTO THE VERTICAL DIMENSION OF ELASMOBRANCH MOVEMENT ECOLOGY [DATASET]

7 files, Knowledge of the three-dimensional movement patterns of elasmobranchs is vital to understanding their ecological roles and exposure to anthropogenic pressures. To date, comparative studies among species at global scales have mostly focused on horizontal movements. Our study addresses the knowledge gap of vertical movements by compiling the first global synthesis of vertical habitat use by elasmobranchs from data obtained by deployment of 989 biotelemetry tags on 38 elasmobranch species. Elasmobranchs displayed high intra- and interspecific variability in vertical movement patterns. Significant vertical overlap was observed for many epipelagic elasmobranchs, indicating an increased likelihood to display spatial overlap, biologically interact, and share similar risk to anthropogenic threats that vary on a vertical gradient. We highlight the critical next steps towards incorporating vertical movement into global management and monitoring strategies for elasmobranchs, emphasising the need to address geographic and taxonomic biases in deployments and to concurrently consider both horizontal and vertical movements, Peer reviewed
