  • Sanchez Vidal, Anna
  • CSIC - Unidad de Tecnología Marina (UTM)
CCC-1 Cruise (29GD20220228) carried out on the Research Vessel García del Cid in 2022., The FAR-DWO project aims to investigate the physical processes involved in the propagation of dense water cascades, quantify their ability to erode, transport and deposit sediment, and analyze their variability in past climate. The objective of the CCC1 campaign is to carry out a CTD and ADCP mesh to characterize the hydrological conditions, and obtain sediment cores to determine the sedimentary conditions of the Cap de Creus canyon.

  • Company, Joan Baptista
  • CSIC - Unidad de Tecnología Marina (UTM)
Oceanographic data acquired during the BITER-1 Cruise (29GD20220917) on board the Research Vessel García del Cid in 2022., The BITER-1 oceanographic campaign is part of the multidisciplinary project "Joint effort between BIology and TEchnology to monitor and recover species and ecosystems impacted by fishing through a network of marine Reserves (BITER)". The main objectives of the BITER-1 campaign are: 1) to obtain images with the ROV Liropus 2000 and with the AUV Girona 500 of the initial state of the 4 Reserves of Fishing Interest and their Control Areas at the time of the closure of the fishing activity; 2) to carry out the first tests of the use of new technology for the evaluation of the state of the ecosystem, as well as tests of the active monitoring of Nephrops norvegicus lobster individuals previously marked with experimental acoustic sensors. Individuals of the 3 main species of this habitat (an octopus, a fish and a shark) will also be equipped with sensors.

ANTOM-2 CRUISE, RV HESPÉRIDES

  • Dachs, Jordi
  • CSIC - Unidad de Tecnología Marina (UTM)
ANTOM-2 Cruise (29HE202201188) carried out on the Research Vessel Hespérides in 2022., The sampling cruise ANTOM-2 is the second of the two campaigns of the ANTOM project, which aims to understand the long-range transport and biogeochemistry of organic pollutants at global scale and how these reach the Antarctic Ocean, as well the pollutant interactions with marine microbiomes. During the campaign, samples of air, seawater, microbiomes, zooplankton and plastics are taken. In addition, a number of experiments are performed with the objective to assess the microbial degradation of pollutants, and the effects of organic pollutants and anthropogenic organic matter on marine microbiomes.

PYROWIND CRUISE, RV HESPÉRIDES

  • Villanueva, Joan
  • CSIC - Unidad de Tecnología Marina (UTM)
PYROWIND Cruise (29HE20220426) carried out on the Research Vessel Hespérides in 2022., The aim of the project is to develop an innovative palaeo-proxy approach to investigate the natural range of variability of the Hadley circulation during past episodes of extreme warmth and cold. The approach relies on the exploitation as climate proxy of an untapped but widespread material in marine sediments: windborne pyrogenic carbon (PyC) derived from savannah and grassland fires in the tropics. Through the geochemical and isotopic spatial characterization of PyC, along with the analysis of mineral dust in the modern tropical deep ocean, and a PyC biogeochemical model, we will build an interpretative framework of PyC deposition in deep-sea sediments. Its application in Pliocene-Pleistocene sequences from the Atlantic and the Pacific will allow the reconstruction of past meridional and zonal shifts in the Intertropical Convergence Zone and the Southern hemisphere westerlies, and provide new constraints on the natural variability of the Hadley circulation and associated hydroclimates.

ELGEOPOWER CRUISE, RV SARMIENTO DE GAMBOA

  • Catalán, Manuel
  • CSIC - Unidad de Tecnología Marina (UTM)
ELGEOPOWER Cruise (29SG20220104) carried out on the Research Vessel Sarmiento de Gamboa in 2022., ElGeoPower project is a marine geophsyical study of the Powell Basin area, Bransfield Starit, Scotia Plate and Deception Island. We want to get information from these geographical frame to get a deeper knowledge on the creation of oceanic crust from the very beginning of is onset until it is already formed. To do this we will carry out a marine geophysical cruise using surface magnetometry, marine magnetic deep-tow, swath bathymetry, gravity and refraction seismic.

SAGA34S CRUISE, RV SARMIENTO DE GAMBOA

  • Hernández, Alonso
  • CSIC - Unidad de Tecnología Marina (UTM)
SAGA34S Cruise (29SG20220201) carried out on the Research Vessel Sarmiento de Gamboa in 2022., The large-scale currents in the South Atlantic Ocean are the outcome of a combination of common and singular conditions: the classical low/high latitude easterly/westerly wind pattern is here accompanied by the very intense Antarctic Circumpolar Current (AACC) to the south and the asymmetry between the western and eastern (long versus short) margins. Further, the ocean operates as the outer portion of an inverted estuary – the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC) – with net northward upper and intermediate transports compensated by net southward deep transport, and also influenced by northward Antarctic near-bottom flow. All these factors together cause relatively shallow central waters in the South Atlantic Ocean, extending over the entire subtropical-tropical gyres and overlying relatively intense and thick intermediate flows. Further, this ocean basin is characterized by poleward/equatorward western boundary currents at high/low latitudes, which are fed by interior zonal flows. Such a particular pattern, together with the peculiarities of the geographic domain, requires specific sampling strategies that include both zonal and meridional hydrographic transects. Here we place special attention to a pathway for both the Agulhas rings and the North Atlantic Deep Water (NADW) along the border between the tropical and subtropical gyres, what we have named the South Atlantic Gateway (SAGA).
