  • CSIC - Unidad de Tecnología Marina (UTM)
AZORES-1 Cruise (29HE19980727) carried out on the Research Vessel Hespérides in 1998, Canarias Azores Gibraltar Observations (CANIGO). The Azores Current (AC) is one of the most important flows towards the Eastern Boundary of the North Atlantic, feeds the coastal upwelling of NW Africa and the Western Iberian Peninsula. This current flows east-southeast (110º) between 33-36 º N. The general objective of the cruise is to quantify the transport of salt, heat, nutrients, inorganic and organic carbon (dissolved and particulate), and to study its biological and optical implications, from the area formation of the AC close to Middle Alantic Ridge, to its dispersion and weakening in the Canary -Madeira region. The specific objectives: 1) To characterise the main physical features. Descripction and quantification of the flow associate to the AC, its counterflows and cold and warm ediies. 2) To mesure the vertical and horizontal transport of carbon and nutrients. Evaluatio of vertical carbon flux by sediment traps and the carbon dioxide air-sea exchange by measuring the sea surface atmospheric CO2 partial pressure. 3) To chemically characterise water masses, specially those transported by the AC and the Mediterranean water . It will allow to estimate the anthropogenic CO2 retained by water massess during ventilation processes. 4) To determine the spatial variability of phytoplankton ohotosynthetic parameters and ots relation with the natural light spectra. 5) To determinate the optical properties of the water column in the AC and its hydrological structures in relation to the chemical compounds and the plankton comnposition and activity. 6) To determine the bacteria activity and its influence on the remineralisation of organic matter. 7) To evaluate the importance of zooplankton migration as active transport of particulate matter below the photic zone as well as its contribution to tal carbon export to deep layers

  • Pérez, Fiz F.
  • CSIC - Unidad de Tecnología Marina (UTM)
FICARAM-XVIII Cruise (29HE20190406) carried out on the Research Vessel Hespérides in 2019, The general objective of the FICARAM-XVIII cruise is to assess the climate change monitoring the keys variables. Firstly, we will investigated the temporal evolution of the anthropogenic carbon storage and the ocean acidification, and evaluate the CO2 absorption capacity in the South Atlantic region and the Atlantic Equatorial zone. Secondly, the changes in the surface and in the main thermocline of thermohaline properties and circulation. Thirty, the changes in the biological and biogeochemical mechanisms that hinder total dissolved organic carbon (DOC) remineralisation in marine systems, taking a multidisciplinary perspective and applying many different approaches

BOCATS CRUISE, RV SARMIENTO DE GAMBOA

  • Pérez, Fiz F.
  • CSIC - Unidad de Tecnología Marina (UTM)
BOCATS Cruise (29SG20160617) carried out on the Research Vessel Sarmiento de Gamboa in 2016, Recent evaluations of the absorption of CO2 in the North Atlantic showed that the natural component of the carbon cycle had been affected by the variability of the thermohaline circulation (MOC). The first goal of the BOCATS project is to extend the time series of the MOC and the observation of the ventilation of the water masses for a better quantification of its effect on the variations in the carbon cycle in the North Atlantic over decades of time scales. The estimation of this variability is essential to evaluate future climate change scenarios. The second goal of BOCATS is to quantify the effect of the increase of atmospheric CO2 in the production and dissolution of CaCO3. The universally accepted hypothesis of the steady state CaCO3 cycle has been questioned due to the acidification observed in the deep waters of the North Atlantic and its negative potential impact on calcareous organisms. The objectives of the BOCATS project are addressed in two main activities: i) Maintain the decentralized circulation observation cycle and the carbon cycle with the ninth completion of the A25 hydrography / geochemistry section between Portugal and Greenland that began in 1997, ii The evaluation in the subpolar turn of the carbon cycle variability, separating the natural and anthropogenic components, including the organic matter, sediments and other biogenic elements. The main observational contribution of BOCATS was a cruise to be carried out in June and July 2016. The high-quality observations foreseen in the subpolar turn contributed to the early detection of the alteration of the carbon cycle and the precise speed of the storage rates of CO2 and acidification, relating these changes with the variability of the MOC

This dataset is composed of 2 files. The main one is the data set itself (10yy_CO3_Spanish_database_hy1.csv) in WHP-Exchange bottle format, with 2418 samples of temperature, salinity, silicate and phosphate concentrations, along with pH, alkalinity, total inorganic carbon and absorbance ratios for measuring ion carbonate in seawater with two different reagents [PbCl2 y Pb(ClO4)2]. Information about the cruise name, year and location (latitude and longitude) is also provided. Information about the spectrophotometric equipment use is also given. The other file (readme_ 10yy_CO3_Spanish_database.txt) includes a short description of the database variables, units and more details on the contained cruises.-- he data are provided under an Attribution-ShareAlike 4.0 International license. However, if you use the data, so as to support the authors, please consider citing the above-mentioned article where data collection and analytical techniques are given in detail. Here we only provide an overall description of the content of the data file, Concentration of ion carbonate has become the fifth measurable variable of the seawater CO2 system since the publication of the work by Byrne and Yao (2008) introducing a spectrophotometric method similar to the standard pH procedure. However, opposite to pH, the ion carbonate method has been refined and updated in a series of works(Easley et al., 2013; Patsavas et al., 2015; Sharp et al., 2017 and Sharp and Byrne, 2019) that introduced modifications in the equations relating the UV absorbance measurements and the final ion carbonate concentration, the reagent used and other details. Except for the USA seminal research group, and the two Spanish teams at the IEO A Coruña and IIM-CSIC, no other oceanographic group has published research data using the ion carbonate spectrophotometric methods. The work by Fajar et al. (2015) used a collection of Spanish cruises from 2009 to 2014 to compare the initial spectrophotometric ion carbonate methods by Byrne and Yao (2008) and Easley et al. (2013)., The current database comprises a set of 9 one-time cruises and one coastal time-series run by the above-mentioned Spanish CO2 research groups, expanding from 2009 to 2020, where ancillary and CO2 measurements (pH, total alkalinity and total inorganic carbon) have been performed, along with spectrophotometric measurements of ion carbonate, which followed the time evolution of the ion carbonate published approaches. The database compiles all the information (cruise identification, time, location, equipment used), measurements and analysis (pressure, temperature, salinity, pH, total alkalinity, total inorganic carbon, silicate and phosphate, UV absorbance ratios for spectrophotometric ion carbonate measurements from two different reagents [PbCl2 and Pb(ClO4)2] needed to perform any CO2 internal consistency analysis. All chemical analysis were assigned a quality indicator, Proyectos estructurales de monitorización del medio marino del IEO (RADIALES, RADPROF, MEDSHIP), proyectos del CSIC y Plan Nacional de I+D del Gobierno de España (CAIBOX, HOTMIX, OVIDE) e Interreg de la UE iFADO, 1 data csv ‘10yy_CO3_Spanish_database_hy1.csv’ file and 1 readme.txt file
