  • Simó, Rafel
  • CSIC - Unidad de Tecnología Marina (UTM)
Oceanographic data acquired during the SUMMIT Cruise (29GD20210610) on board the Research Vessel García del Cid in 2021., The SUMMIT campaign consists of comparing three stations in the Catalan-Balearic Sea: station D in deep waters in the middle of the basin, on the way to the Menorca Canal, where shallow CTD sets will be made (200 m); station E in deep waters but somewhat more productive to the NE, where the same CTD sets will be made; and station S in platform waters near Blanes, with similar routines. Most of the tasks will consist of experiments on deck, especially in incubation tanks bathed with surface water.

BIOGAPS CRUISE, RV GARCÍA DEL CID

  • Simó, Rafel
  • CSIC - Unidad de Tecnología Marina (UTM)
RADMED-ESMARES-0620 Cruise (29GD20190618) carried out on the Research Vessel García del Cid in 2019, The BIOGAPS project aims to study the chemical, ecophysiological and environmental factors that govern the production and recycling of trace volatiles in the sea water , and obtain information that allows to diagnose or predict its distribution in the shallow ocean. In this context, the BIOGAPS cruise will address the following issues: (a) How the concentrations of volatile vary (sulfur and halogen, plus isoprene) with respect to environmental factors and diversity, production and physiology of plankton? We can diagnose or numerically simulate said variability? (b) What role organic matter plays, and its interaction with light, in the Production and recycling of trace volatiles? (c) Enzymatic activities that produce volatiles, follow circadian cycles What can be observed by gene expression? (d) Is The Mediterranean an exceptional source of atmospheric iodine, with Implications for regional health policies?

TRANSPEGASO CRUISE, RV HESPÉRIDES

  • Simó, Rafel
  • CSIC - Unidad de Tecnología Marina (UTM)
TRANSPEGASO Cruise (29HE20141020) carried out on the Research Vessel Hespérides in 2014, Study of atmosferic and ocean interchanges.Trans-PEGASO cruise: Take advantage of the transit from Cartagena to Punta Arenas prior to the Antarctic campaign. A small group of researchers will embark together with the instruments already installed for the subsequent PEGASO cruise and, during the southern transit, they will carry out continuous measurements aimed at: (1) setting up the equipment for the PEGASO cruise and solving the problems of operability that may arise; and (2) obtain complementary data to the PEGASO cruise, of great interest because it is a transect across a wide range of latitudes

SUMMER-1 CRUISE, RV GARCÍA DEL CID

  • CSIC - Unidad de Tecnología Marina (UTM)
SUMMER-1 Cruise (29GD20110913) carried out on the Research Vessel García del Cid in 2011, Probing the Rare Biosphere of the North-West Mediterranean Sea: An Experiment with High Sequencing Effort.Samples were taken at Station D, an open sea station at 40°52’N and 02°47’E in the NW Mediterranean Sea, during the SUMMER cruise between 13th and 22nd of September 2011 on board the RV “García del Cid”. The surface sample was taken at 5 m on the 15th of September and the bottom sample was collected at 2000 m depth on the 17th of September. Sampling was carried out with Niskin bottles mounted on a rosette with a conductivity-temperature-depth (CTD) profiler. Water was prefiltered through a 200 μm mesh and processed on board. To collect microbial biomass, 5–15 L of sea-water were prefiltered through a 3 μm pore size Durapore filter (Millipore, Cork, Ireland) and free-living bacterial biomass was collected on a 0.22 μm pore size Sterivex filter (Durapore, Millipore). The samples were filtered in succession using a peristaltic pump. The 0.22 μm pore size Sterivex unit was filled with 1.8 ml of lysis buffer (40 mM EDTA, 50 mM Tris-HCl, 0.75 M sucrose) and stored at –80°C. DNA was extracted by a standard protocol using phenol/chloroform . The same amount of DNA for both samples was sequenced

PEGASO CRUISE, RV HESPÉRIDES

  • Simó, Rafel
  • CSIC - Unidad de Tecnología Marina (UTM)
PEGASO Cruise (29HE20150102) carried out on the Research Vessel Hespérides in 2015, The main objective is to investigate the planktonic production of aerosol forming substances, mainly trace gases, microgels and biological particles. The study regions will be South Georgia and Weddell Sea, in the Southern Ocean (Antarctica). Both zones have abundant proliferations of plankton, each of which will be studied through Lagrangian monitoring (drifting buoys), entry and exit of the bloom, and intense experiments in 48-hour cycles. Biological, chemical and physical variables will be measured in the surface ocean and in the atmosphere
