PASO CRUISE, RV HESPÉRIDES

  • Dañobeitia, Juan José
  • CSIC - Unidad de Tecnología Marina (UTM)
PASO Cruise (29HE19940301) carried out on the Research Vessel Hespérides in 1994, Geophysical survey in the South Pacific: Volcanic Belt of Pascua (Hot-Line) and Society Islands (Hot-Spot). The first objective consists in the investigation of the genesis and evolution of the Easter Volcanic Belt, which is an alignment of submarine volcanoes located east of Easter Island and that connects in its easternmost sector with the Nazca Ridge. The knowledge of the cortical structure, as well as the main segmentation directions of the Nazca Plate will allow to quantify the relative movements of the Pascua and Juan Fernandez microplates and therefore define the plate kinematics of an important sector of the South Pacific with implications in seismicity on the western coast of South America. The second objective is the obtaining of significant geophysical parameters for the study of the generation of volcanic rocks and / or submarine volcanic chains, in a context of interplate volcanism referred to the mechanical response of the lithosphere in function of the speed and changes in the expansion oceanica (generation of new lithosphere)

GALAPAGOS-96 CRUISE, RV HESPÉRIDES

  • Dañobeitia, Juan José
  • CSIC - Unidad de Tecnología Marina (UTM)
GALAPAGOS-96 Cruise (29HE19960328) carried out on the Research Vessel Hespérides in 1996, Geophysical Campaign to the North of the Galapagos archipelago in the Cocos-Nazca dorsal (Galapagos 96). The main objective of this research is to determine the morphological structure of the COCOS-NAZCA dorsal, using gravity, magnetism and high resolution bathymetry data, which allows us to check the hotspot-dorsal interaction models and quantify the effect of the variation in the contribution of magma to axial morphology and cortical accretion processes in expansion zones with intermediate velocities. Specifically we intend to determine how the axial morphology varies along the ridge as a function of the distance to the Galapagos hotspot. In addition, to restrict the magnitude of variations in cortical thickness associated with the Galapagos "swell" and the changes observed in the axial morphology of the COCOS-NAZCA dorsal

CORTES-96 CRUISE, RV HESPÉRIDES

  • Dañobeitia, Juan José
  • CSIC - Unidad de Tecnología Marina (UTM)
CORTES-96 Cruise (29HE19960412) carried out on the Research Vessel Hespérides in 1996, Crustal Offshore Research Transect from Extensive Seismic (CORTES), The CORTES-P96 multisciplinary experiment was carried out longitudinally and perpendicularly to the Gulf of California or Mar de Cortés. More than 1500 miles of reflection seismic, potential field measurements (gravity and magnetism) over 2000 miles were acquired, as well as side-scan echo sounder and sonographs throughout the cruise. The objective was to solve the complex geodynamics of the Gulf of California covering the most significant structures (fracture zones, oceanic ridges and continental remnant blocks) related to the San Andres-Gulf of California transforming fault system. In addition, the limits between Plate Cocos, Rivera, Pacifico and North America were sampled

PARSIFAL CRUISE, RV HESPÉRIDES

PARSIFAL Cruise (29HE20000518) carried out on the Research Vessel Hespérides in 2000, Seismotectonics parameterization of the fracturing of the Atlantic margin of SW Iberia: Application of seismogenic models of tsunamis. General objective: Modeling of an active seismogenic area capable of causing large tsunamis of great social and environmental impact. Specific objectives 1) Definition of the structural, morphological and neotectonic style of the south west margin of the Iberian Peninsula by sampling sedimentary rocks (gravity corer), high resolution bathymetric cartography and reflectivity images (echographies) of the seabed. 2) Tectonic characterization of the contact between the Iberian and African plates. For this, active and passive seismic will be carried out to obtain geophysical parameters, which allow the modeling of the entire southern Atlantic margin

PLOCAN CRUISE, RV SARMIENTO DE GAMBOA

  • Dañobeitia, Juan José
  • CSIC - Unidad de Tecnología Marina (UTM)
PLOCAN Cruise (29SG20140601) carried out on the Research Vessel Sarmiento de Gamboa in 2014, The objective of the cruise is to collaborate in the installation and anchoring of a buoy with superficial meteorological and oceanographic instrumentation in the context of the PLOCAN platform (The Oceanic Platform of the Canary Islands). It also contains a structure in subsurface waters which brings together another series of sensors to measure physical and biochemical parameters in the water column. The deployment of this anchor will allow to measure atmospheric and oceanographic variables in high resolution (every hour) at sea, which will be transmitted in real time via satellite. Regarding the atmosphere and by means of a meteorological station, barometric pressure, temperature, relative humidity, wind speed and direction, precipitation and photosynthetically active solar radiation are measured, and oceanographic variables are measured at the sea surface. temperature, conductivity, oxygen, turbidity and chlorophyll. In addition, there are two sensors belonging to the Marine Chemistry group of the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria (ULPGC) to record the data on surface pH and CO2. With respect to the subsurface structure, pressure, temperature, salinity, dissolved oxygen, chlorophyll and currents are measured in a self-contained manner. These observations can be viewed once the funding is recovered. It is estimated that the funding remains one year maximum
