MARIBNO CRUISE, RV SARMIENTO DE GAMBOA

  • Muñoz, Alfonso
  • CSIC - Unidad de Tecnología Marina (UTM)
Oceanographic data acquired during the MARIBNO Cruise (29SG20210914) on board the Research Vessel Sarmiento de Gamboa in 2021., The MARIBNO project is located in the NW zone of Iberia, which constitutes an ideal environment to raise the following main objectives: 1. Study of the cortical structure at the western end of the Cantabrian Mountains and the transition zone between the western and northern margins of Iberia. 2. Study of the tectonic control exerted by the previous structures during the two main alpine stages. 3. Mapping and characterization of cortical domains using a multidisciplinary approach. Definition and application of geophysical and geological criteria applicable to the zonation of cortical domains in other parts of the world with similar contexts.

ECOSUMA CRUISE, RV SARMIENTO DE GAMBOA

  • González, Angel F.
  • CSIC - Unidad de Tecnología Marina (UTM)
Oceanographic data acquired during the ECOSUMA Cruise (29SG20211025) on board the Research Vessel Sarmiento de Gamboa in 2021., The aim of the ECOSUMA project is to study one the main bottlenecks that prevent the integral culture of the common octopus Octopus vulgaris. For that purpose we undertake a multidisciplinary survey that will relate chemical and physical parameters with the abundance of paralarvae in different strata of the water column. We use a multinet gear and deploy rosettes and CTD along eight transects in the proximity of Spanish and norther Portuguese waters. We also measure turbidity in most tows undertaken.

ELGEOPOWER CRUISE, RV SARMIENTO DE GAMBOA

  • Catalán, Manuel
  • CSIC - Unidad de Tecnología Marina (UTM)
ELGEOPOWER Cruise (29SG20220104) carried out on the Research Vessel Sarmiento de Gamboa in 2022., ElGeoPower project is a marine geophsyical study of the Powell Basin area, Bransfield Starit, Scotia Plate and Deception Island. We want to get information from these geographical frame to get a deeper knowledge on the creation of oceanic crust from the very beginning of is onset until it is already formed. To do this we will carry out a marine geophysical cruise using surface magnetometry, marine magnetic deep-tow, swath bathymetry, gravity and refraction seismic.

SAGA34S CRUISE, RV SARMIENTO DE GAMBOA

  • Hernández, Alonso
  • CSIC - Unidad de Tecnología Marina (UTM)
SAGA34S Cruise (29SG20220201) carried out on the Research Vessel Sarmiento de Gamboa in 2022., The large-scale currents in the South Atlantic Ocean are the outcome of a combination of common and singular conditions: the classical low/high latitude easterly/westerly wind pattern is here accompanied by the very intense Antarctic Circumpolar Current (AACC) to the south and the asymmetry between the western and eastern (long versus short) margins. Further, the ocean operates as the outer portion of an inverted estuary – the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC) – with net northward upper and intermediate transports compensated by net southward deep transport, and also influenced by northward Antarctic near-bottom flow. All these factors together cause relatively shallow central waters in the South Atlantic Ocean, extending over the entire subtropical-tropical gyres and overlying relatively intense and thick intermediate flows. Further, this ocean basin is characterized by poleward/equatorward western boundary currents at high/low latitudes, which are fed by interior zonal flows. Such a particular pattern, together with the peculiarities of the geographic domain, requires specific sampling strategies that include both zonal and meridional hydrographic transects. Here we place special attention to a pathway for both the Agulhas rings and the North Atlantic Deep Water (NADW) along the border between the tropical and subtropical gyres, what we have named the South Atlantic Gateway (SAGA).

LISA CRUISE, RV SARMIENTO DE GAMBOA

  • Neres, Marta
  • CSIC - Unidad de Tecnología Marina (UTM)
Oceanographic data acquired during the LISA Cruise (29SG20220616) on board the Research Vessel Sarmiento de Gamboa in 2022., LISA cruise has the objective of acquiring new geophysical data in a mostly unexplored region of the SW Iberia Margin, about which many questions exist posing problems to geological interpretation. The LISA cruise acquired geophysical data along a profile (the LISA profile) that cuts across the Ampere seamount, the West Horseshoe Abyssal Palin, the plate boundary region and intersection of the Tore-Madeira Rise with the Gloria fault, and the Atlantic oceanic crust. The cruise consisted on the acquisition of wide angle seismic reflection anf refraction data using 21 OBH from GEOMAR-Kiel and the UTM seismic source. Additional data acquired: magnetic, multibeam bathymetry and backscatter and parasound.

EIMPACT-1 CRUISE, RV SARMIENTO DE GAMBOA

  • Arístegui, Javier
  • CSIC - Unidad de Tecnología Marina (UTM)
Oceanographic data acquired during the eIMPACT-1 Cruise (29SG20220729) on board the Research Vessel Sarmiento de Gamboa in 2022., The general objective of e-IMPACT is to study the linkage between the dynamics of mesoscale and sub-mesoscale processes occurring along the life history of cyclonic and anticyclonic eddies in the Canary Eddy Corridor (CEC), and their effects on the structure and metabolism of the planktonic community, as well as in their role in the vertical carbon flux to the deep ocean. e-IMPACT will address the coupled dynamics between food-web diversity and function, in relation to the physical and chemical conditions, the origin and composition of DOC and POC and their contribution to remineralization rates in the twilight zone of the ocean.

BLUEHARVESTING CRUISE, RV SARMIENTO DE GAMBOA

  • Albert, Palanques
  • CSIC - Unidad de Tecnología Marina (UTM)
Oceanographic data acquired during the BLUEHARVESTING Cruise (29SG20221001) on board the Research Vessel Sarmiento de Gamboa in 2022., The cruise is designed to analyse the direct environmental effects on the seabed and the water column arising from the deployment and operation of a prototype polymetallic nodule collector. The state of the seabed before and after the passage of the nodule collector vehicle is investigated by recording a high-definition video installed on a remotely operated vehicle (ROV). The dispersion of the resuspended material plume by the nodule collector is monitored by a set of moorings deployed around the circulation zone of the nodule collector. Anchors include turbidimeters, current meters, a particle camera and a grain size analyser. Likewise, a transect of CTDs is repeated several times and a follow-up of the plume with the CTD behind the collector. The underwater sound impact produced by the nodule collector is recorded with a deep-sea hydrophone located at one of the anchors.
