GULLY EVOLUTION DATASET ROLLING LANDSCAPE OVER SEVEN DECADES IN SW EUROPE

  • Hayas López, Antonio
  • Gómez Calero, José Alfonso
[Description of methods used for collection/generation of data] The original data sources come from the databases of the National Plan for Aerial Orthophotography of the National Geographic Institute of Spain (PNOA-IGN) and the Andalusian Environmental Information Network of the Regional Government of Andalusia (REDIAM), as well as from the Climate Subsystem download center of the Regional Government of Andalusia., [Methods for processing the data] Gully System Analysis: Historical orthophotos from the National Geographic Institute of Spain dating from 1956 to 2022 were used to reconstruct the evolution of nine gully systems. GIS techniques helped map gully surfaces, and DEMs were employed to estimate gully volumes in 2013 and 2019. For other years, volumes were calculated using gully cross-sections and widths relationships from availables DEMs. Land Use Analysis: The land use in the gully basins was evaluated using maps from the Andalusian Environmental Information Network and older cartographic sources. The categories analyzed included herbaceous crops, woody crops, bare soil, and gullies. Peak Flow Discharges: Flow rates were estimated using a modified rational method, considering uniform rainfall across the basin., The dataset includes the following information: measurements of the cross-sections of the gullies analyzed in two time periods (2013 and 2019), obtained through geographic analysis in a GIS environment (QGIS); results from the digitization of the surface area of the gullies (ha) analyzed from aerial orthophotos in a GIS environment from 1956 to 2022; volumes (m³) derived from the gully perimeters and the relationships between the cross-sections and the widths of the gullies; erosion rates (tn/ha/yr) based on the gully volumes in different time periods; distribution of land uses (m²) in the respective gully catchment areas; and rainfall intensities derived from the maximum daily precipitation recorded in each analyzed period, in relation to the time of concentration to the outlet point of the different gullies analyzed (mm/h)., This work has been possible thanks to the contribution of the Postdoctoral fellowship (POSTDOC_21_00342) from the Andalusian Plan for Research, Development and Innovation (PAIDI 2020) and the project TUdi (GA 101000224) from European Union's Horizon 2020 research program., File List: Gully evolution dataset rolling landscape over seven decades in SW Europe., Peer reviewed

HISTORICAL SEA LEVEL OBSERVATIONS FROM ALICANTE, SPAIN (1870-2018)

A set of historical tide gauge sea level records from Alicante (Spanish Mediterranean coast) have been recovered from logbooks stored at the Spanish National Geographical Institute (IGN). Sea level measurements have been digitised, quality-controlled and merged into two consistent sea level time series. Vertical references among instruments benchmarks have been derived from high precision vertical levelling surveys. Earlier observations are daily averages and more recent data are hourly values. The observations are from 7 different tide gauge records in Alicante outer harbour (Alicante I) and five tide gauge series in Alicante inner harbour (Alicante II). The sea level record in Alicante starts in 1870 with daily averaged values until the 1920s and hourly afterwards, and is still in operation, thus representing the longest tide gauge sea level time series in the Mediterranean Sea. The sea level at Alicante I has been measured by tide pole, floating gauge, mechanical recorder, digital recorder and since 2014 by radar gauge. The sea level at Alicante II has been measured by floating gauge, digital recorder and from 2014 onwards by radar gauge. This scarcity of long-term sea-level observations, as well as their uneven geographical distribution is a major challenge for climate studies that address, for example, the quantification of mean sea-level rise at centennial time scales, the accurate assessment of sea-level acceleration or the long-term changes in sea-level extremes that are vital for coastal risk assessments. This dataset represents an additional effort of sea-level data archaeology and aims at preserving the historical scientific heritage that has been up to now stored in old archives in non-electronic format. The research was partially funded by the Spanish Ministry of Science, Innovation and Universities. A further series was rescued from Santander under the same initiative. HISTORICAL SEA LEVEL OBSERVATIONS FROM SANTANDER, SPAIN (1876-1928)

A set of historical tide gauge sea level records from Santander (Northern Spain) have been recovered from logbooks stored at the Spanish National Geographical Institute (IGN). Sea level measurements have been digitised, quality-controlled and merged into a consistent sea level time series. Vertical references among instruments benchmarks have been derived from high precision vertical levelling surveys. The observations were recorded as daily averages and are from three different instruments in two locations in Santander (Spain). The historical sea level record in Santander consists of a daily time series spanning the period 1876-1928 and it is further connected to the modern tide gauge station nearby, ensuring datum continuity up to the present. The data from Santander comes from a floating gauge and then syphon gauges. A further two series were rescued from Alicante under the same initiative. CODE AND DATA FOR THE STOCHASTIC SKELETON MODEL OF THE MADDEN-JULIAN OSCILATION WITH TIME-DEPENDENT OBSERVATION-BASED FORCING

  • Ehstand, Noemie
[Description of methods used for collection/generation of data] Described in the file README.pdf, [Methods for processing the data] Described in the file README.pdf, The Madden-Julian oscillation (MJO) is a planetary-scale wave envelope of smaller-scale convective processes, slowly propagating eastward at the equator, going around the Earth in 30 to 60 days. The convection and circulation anomalies associated with the MJO affect weather and climate in many parts of the globe. This set of files contain a Julia implementation of the MJO skeleton model, a minimal nonlinear oscillator model of thie MJO. Previous studies primarily relied on mathematically simple and time-independent forcings in this model. Here, observation-based, time-dependent forcing functions are used to capture more realistic variability. The code presented here reads-in the needed reanalysis data, runs the skeleton model on them, and produces figures from the output data., - Marie Skolodowska-Curie Grant Agreement No 813844. - Agencia Estatal de Investigación (MCIN/AEI/10.13039/501100011033) under the María de Maeztu project CEX2021-001164-M, - Agencia Estatal de Investigación (MCIN/AEI/10.13039/501100011033) and FEDER "Una manera de hacer Europa" under Project LAMARCA No. PID2021-123352OB-C32., With funding from the Spanish government through the "Severo Ochoa Centre of Excellence" accreditation (CEX2021-001164-M)., README.pdf forcing-profiles.ipynb Stochastic-skeleton-model-main.ipynb Stochastic-skeleton-model-plots.ipynb other folders and files used by these scripts, and described in the README.pdf, Peer reviewed
