INSECTIVORE DIET AND ABUNDANCE DETERMINE THE CONTRIBUTION OF BIRD SPECIES TO SERVICES AND DISSERVICES IN AN AGRICULTURAL ECOSYSTEM [DATASET]

This dataset contains the data and code necessary to replicate analyses in Jiménez-Albarral et al (2025). The study addresses the agronomic quality, defined as the trade-off between ecosystem services (pest control) and disservices (intraguild predation), of 26 insectivorous bird species in culturally and economically important cider apple orchards in northern Spain., Birds_traits.xlsx: Trait values of bird species captured in three study apple orchards of Asturias (northern Spain), Birds_wPOO.xlsx: Weighted percentage of occurrence (wPOO) values of prey taxa by bird species in three study apple orchards of Asturias (N Spain), Insectivorous birds provide an essential ecosystem service in agriculture by feeding on arthropods considered pests but can also consume arthropods considered to be natural enemies of such pests. Therefore, depending on the dietary composition of the birds, intraguild predation could outweigh pest control services. This study addressed the agronomic quality, defined as the trade-off between ecosystem services (pest control) and disservices (intraguild predation), of 26 insectivorous bird species in culturally and economically important cider apple orchards in northern Spain. We used DNA-metabarcoding techniques to analyze bird’ diets. First, we examined whether the trophic position of bird species can be inferred from functional traits related to foraging and movement behavior and from the degree of insectivory in their diets. Then, we tested whether bird abundance and trophic position influenced agronomic quality, based on the proportion of arthropod crop pests and natural enemies in their diet. Finally, we combined bird abundance, insectivory and agronomic quality to infer the potential contribution of each bird species to pest control. Bird trophic position was positively related to the degree of insectivory, with this effect being modulated by traits related to body size. The trophic position of birds was inversely related to their agronomic quality. Nevertheless, the agronomic quality only slightly affected the differential contribution of bird species to the whole assemblage effect. Overall, we found the potential of insectivorous bird species to control pests can be estimated based on their trophic position. Yet, in agroecosystems with uneven avian species abundance, the potential contribution of bird species to pest-control services may be driven by their quantitative contribution rather than by the bird’s per capita, qualitative effects. CO-INFECTION DYNAMICS: MAJOR HISTOCOMPATIBILITY COMPLEX MODULATION OF BATRACHOCHYTRIUM DENDROBATIDIS AND RANAVIRUS INFECTIONS IN AMPHIBIANS

This dataset includes genotypic and infection status data for amphibian individuals sampled in Picos de Europa and Zamora locations. It integrates immune gene markers (MHC.Pere, Alpe, HPLEU), location, and quantitative infection load data for Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis (Bd) and Ranavirus (Rv). The table allows analysis of associations between host genotypes, infection prevalence, and pathogen load., Genetic variation in immune genes is an important component of genetic diversity. The genes in the Major Histocompatibility Complex (MHC) provide an excellent model system for studying the mechanisms that generate and maintain genetic diversity in natural populations. While both demographic factors and pathogen-mediated selection processes contribute to the extreme diversity observed in the MHC systems, determining the relative importance of these evolutionary mechanisms has remained challenging. We investigated the role of pathogen-mediated selection in driving MHC diversity in three amphibian species: Ichthyosaura alpestris, Pleurodeles waltl and Pelophilax perezi. Our study examined the relationships between individual MHC diversity, infection status, infection intensity, and co-infection with two major amphibian pathogens: Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis (Bd) and Ranavirus sp. (Rv) in natural populations. Our research demonstrated significant differences in Bd and Rv infection intensities among individuals with varying numbers of MHC loci. However, co-infection showed no discernible influence on infection intensities. We observed stronger associations of specific MHC alleles and supertypes with infection intensity and status in I. alpestris. These findings suggest that, in the context of multi-host infections, MHC genes may provide valuable insights into the evolutionary forces shaping MHC diversity, although the specific effects of individual MHC alleles on disease dynamics are yet to be clarified., VR international grant, Peer reviewed

quantitative_song_traits: Individual-specific estimates of quantitative song traits, number of MHC alleles, and the presence of particular MHC alleles. This dataset was used to test if quantitative song traits reflect MHC allelic diversity or the presence of particular alleles, qualitative_song_traits: Individual-specific estimates of syllable content (presence of particular syllables), and the number of MHC alleles. This dataset was used to test if qualitative song traits reflect MHC allelic diversity. To test if the presence of particular syllables are associated with the presence of particular alleles, this dataset should be merged with "quantitative_song_traits.xlsx" based on ring numbers, genetic_distance: Genetic distance of individuals (with information on qualitative song traits) based on their MHC sequences, song_distance: Dissimilarity in song content among males based on the frequency of use of particular syllables, Several hypotheses predict that the major histocompatibility complex (MHC) drives mating preference in females. Olfactory, color or morphological traits are often found as reliable signals of the MHC profile, but the role of avian song mediating MHC-based female choice remains largely unexplored. We investigated the relationship between several MHC and acoustic features in the collared flycatcher (Ficedula albicollis) a European passerine with complex songs. We screened a fragment of the class IIB 2nd exon of the MHC molecule, of which individuals harbor 4-15 alleles, while considerable sequence diversity is maintained at the population level. To make statistical inferences from a large number of comparisons, we adopted both null-hypothesis testing and effect size framework in combination with randomization procedures. After controlling for potential confounding factors, neither MHC allelic diversity nor the presence of particular alleles was associated remarkably to the investigated qualitative and quantitative song traits. Furthermore, genetic similarity among males based on MHC sequences was not reflected by the similarity in their song based on syllable content. Overall, these results suggest that the relationship between features of song and the allelic composition and diversity of MHC is not strong in the studied species. However, a biologically-motivated analysis revealed that individuals that harbor an MHC allele that impairs survival perform songs with broader frequency range. This finding suggests that certain aspects of the song may bear reliable information concerning the MHC profile of the individuals, which can be used by females to optimize mate choice., Peer reviewed
