Challenges for the creation of digital resources in the humanities

  • Galina-Russell, Isabel
The production and use of digital resources is an increasingly important subject within the humanities. Currently significant amounts of resources are invested into digitization projects, databases, websites and other types of digital resources. However, there are few studies that address their production, use and dissemination. The present article introduces the main issues around the production of digital tools and resources as well as the concept of “digital humanities”. We present and analyze the results of an initial diagnosis of the digital humanities landscape, taking as a case study the National Autonomous University of Mexico (Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México – UNAM). These results are discussed and the main challenges and opportunities for the field presented.

Jean Cocteau a l'escena catalana (1917-1966)

Orcid: A global system for authors identification in scholarly communication

  • García-Gómez, Consol
Description of the project Open Researcher and ContributorID (Orcid) that tries to solve the name’s ambiguity and duplicity problems to identify correctly the researchers (authors and contributors) by creating a single record. This record will be connected with other current systems of author identification as Author Resolver, Inspire, IraLIS, RePEc, Scopus Author Identifier, ResearcherID, VIVO and others. Orcid will be linked to the researchers publications to facilitate its visibility, identifying contributors and reviewers and, ultimately, promoting the process of scientific discovery.

Apple launches a crack in the book world

  • García-Marco, Francisco-Javier
The relevance and potential impact of Apple Computer’s iBooks initiative is discussed. iBooks is aimed at the USA textbook market, but it has a great potential to expand, as has previously occurred with other services that use iTunes, Apple’s B2C-C2C e-commerce and digital distribution platform. The initiative combines hardware, authoring software, e-reader, distribution channels, and social and networking services integration to empower systemically and synergistically its products and services against those of the competition, creating a new prototypic exemplar of the so-called “digital ecosystems”.

Information governance

  • García-Morales, Elisa
Information governance is a term that is becoming increasingly important in relation to both professional and business spheres and in particular to market technology. Various conceptual approaches about its significance and its development are analyzed, concluding that it facilitates the positioning of information at a strategic level and responds to the need to establish rules and policies that allow the effective use of information inside an organization.

The reporting syndrome, or when companies remember to manage information

  • García-Morales, Elisa
Management reporting is a complex activity that requires multiple systems and information resources created for other purposes in the course of daily work. When companies have to write their management reports, they often suffer the problems of an inadequate information management system. Technological solutions by themselves do not respond to the needs, unless they are embedded in an information governance framework.

Simple and accurate two-noded beam element for composite laminated beams using a refined zigzag theory

  • Oñate, E.
  • Eijo, A.
  • Oller, S.
In this work we present a new simple linear two-noded beam element adequate for the analysis of composite laminated and sandwich beams based on the combination of classical Timoshenko beam theory and the refined zigzag kinematics proposed by Tessler ''et al.'' [[#cite-22|[22]]]. The element has just four kinematic variables per node. Shear locking is eliminated by reduced integration. The accuracy of the new beam element is tested in a number of applications to the analysis of composite laminated beams with simple supported and clamped ends under point loads and uniformly distributed loads. An example showing the capability of the new element for accurately reproducing delamination effects is also presented.

Analysis of fluid-soil-structure interaction problems with the Particle Finite Element Method (PFEM)

We present some developments in the Particle Finite Element Method (PFEM) for analysis of coupled problems in mechanics involving fluid-soil-structure interaction (FSSI). The PFEM uses an updated Lagrangian description to model the motion of material points in both the fluid and the solid domains (the later including soil/rocks and structures). A mesh connects the particles (nodes) defining the discretized domain where the governing equations for each of the constituent materials are solved as in the standard FEM. The procedure to model frictional contact conditions and material erosion at fluid-solid and solid-solid interfaces is described. We present several examples of application of the PFEM to solve FSSI problems such as the motion of rocks by water streams, the erosion of river beds, the stability of breakwaters and constructions under sea waves, the falling of landslides on houses and into a reservoir and the failure of rockfill dams in overspill situations.

Cloud law and contract negotiation

  • Oppenheim, Charles
The main characteristics of cloud computing services are explained and the clauses typically included in contracts between suppliers and customers of such services are discussed. Storing data on a cloud service can be more comfortable for an organization and cheaper than local storage, but it involves several risks. Recommendations are given on how to negotiate contracts. A list of questions to be asked of cloud service suppliers is provided so that a potential client can take an informed decision and avoid unpleasant surprises.
