Quo Vadis, Raters? A frontier approach to identify overratings and underratings in sovereign credit risk

This study analyses overratings and underratings in sovereign credit risk. The analysis uses partial frontier methods, a technique rarely applied in this literature. By combining a robust variant of the free disposal hull (FDH) estimator, we measure both underratings and overratings for individual countries and groups of countries. Particular attention is paid to comparing pre-crisis and crisis years in order to assess possible changes in the magnitude of the deviations. Our findings indicate a remarkable degree of both overratings and underratings during the analysed period (1999–2010), which partially vanish during the last years of the sample (2008–2010)—corresponding to the financial crisis—when many downgrades took place, especially in Eurozone countries. The results allow us to emphasize the importance of monitoring these deviations for sustainable financial stability. Our results also show the potential benefits of using partial frontier methods for measuring both underratings and overratings.

Video corrections of undergraduate teaching lab reports

(March 11-13, 2019, Valencia, Spain)., Here it is presented a new methodology based on using video recordings for the evaluation and marking of lab reports in the undergraduate teaching labs. Students are typically requested these reports at each lab session. The reports are partly (or fully) used for the determination of the students mark related to the teaching labs. These reports do not always have the quality expected, since undergraduate students frequently experience different difficulties. Video recordings of the marking process of the reports, with the inclusion of a detailed identification and explanation of the mistakes found, have been performed for the Materials Technology subject in the 4th course of the Industrial Technology Engineering degree. These video recordings, unlike the typically adopted corrections using text comments, were more warmly welcomed by the students, increased the comprehension of the mistakes they performed, and helped them to learn how to prepare higher quality reports. In addition, most of the students considered that these video corrections should be generally implemented in all the teaching labs. Finally, it was also found that marking through this method saves a significant amount of marking time to the lecture.

Moodle questionnaires as a self-assessment tool for meeting the challenges of diversity in students' background knowledge

Comunicació presentada al ICERI 2018 11th annual International Conference of Education, Research and Innovation (Seville, Spain. 12-14 November, 2018), Process Automation and Advanced Control is a subject of the master’s degree in Industrial Engineering from the Universitat Jaume I de Castelló that seeks to develop the students’ ability to design automated production systems and advanced process controllers. In order to properly acquire the specific competences of this master’s degree subject, the students should master some basic concepts of control systems that are generally acquired at a bachelor’s degree level. The teachers of the subject find that the background knowledge of the master students is diverse because the students have studied different bachelor’s degrees at different European universities. The content of the subject being dense, the lecturers have little room for manoeuvre in order to review and reinforce this necessary prior knowledge during the lessons. In this work, we present a tool that allows the students to self-assess their prior knowledge. The tool has been implemented in Moodle and it consists of a variety of questionnaires with instantaneous feedback that guides each student on the learning materials that he should review in order to fill his gaps in background knowledge.

Optimized battery sizing for merchant solar PV capacity firming in different electricity markets

Comunicació presentada a IECON 2019 - 45th Annual Conference of the IEEE Industrial Electronics Society (Lisbon, Portugal 14-17 Oct. 2019), This work analyses the minimum energy capacity requirements to be demanded to battery energy storage systems used in megawatt-range merchant solar PV plants to grant capacity firming. The operation of such a plant is simulated (with a 2-minute time step, at three different locations of the Iberian Peninsula, and for different battery sizes) after solving a quadratic programming optimization problem. The control algorithm takes into account the irradiance forecast and the intraday electricity market configuration, which presents certain peculiarities in the Iberian region with regard to other European markets. The analysis has been performed in an annual basis and current irradiance measured values have been used.

Comunicació presentada a 7th International conference on Changeable, Agile, Reconfigurable and Virtual Production (CARV2018) (Nantes, France 8-10 October 2018), The use of ontologies in information systems for engineering applications calls for ontologies representing experts’ knowledge in a principled and robust manner. The work we present in the paper brings together, on the one hand, two ontologies developed for the engineering domain, namely PPDRC and MIRC and, on the other hand, the DOLCE foundational ontology. The former two have been developed by taking DOLCE as reference model for distinguishing between the high-level entities they quantify over. However, the relation with DOLCE calls for improvements. The ultimate purpose of the paper is to show how the conceptual transparency of domain ontologies can be enhanced by (properly) using a foundational ontology.

Comunicació presentada al 22rd International Congress on Project Management and Engineering CIDIP 2018 (Madrid, 11-13 July 2018), In machining processes the use of coolants and lubricants in the cutting zone is critical to reduce cutting forces, facilitate the chip removal and improve the surface quality of the workpiece. However, the influence of different coolant/lubricant techniques on the surface finish depends on many factors, such as the geometry of the cutting tool, material of the workpiece, cutting conditions, and so on. This paper studies the effect of different lubrication techniques such as: internal coolant, external coolant, dry cutting, air coolant and MQL lubrication (Minimum Quantity Lubrication) on the surface finish and the advantages and disadvantages of these systems for milling carbon steels. The study fundamentally analyzes the variations in roughness due to the built-up edge (BUE) and the minimum chip thickness in relation to the type of lubrication / cooling used., En los procesos de mecanizado la refrigeración / lubricación de la zona de corte es fundamental para conseguir menores fuerzas de corte, facilitar el arranque de viruta y mejorar la calidad superficial de la pieza. Sin embargo, la influencia de las diferentes técnicas en el acabado superficial depende de muchos factores, como la geometría de la herramienta de corte, material de la pieza de trabajo, condiciones de corte, etc. En esta comunicación se estudia el efecto de diferentes técnicas de lubricación como: lubricación interna, externa, en seco, con aire y con MQL (Minimum Quantity Lubrication) sobre el acabado superficial y se presentan las ventajas e inconvenientes de estos sistemas para el fresado de aceros al carbono. El estudio analiza fundamentalmente las variaciones de rugosidad debidas al efecto de filo recrecido (Built-up Edge, BUE) y del espesor mínimo de viruta en relación con el tipo de lubricación / refrigeración empleada

Sustainability from design. Critical overview, analysis and disambiguation

Design, understood as a cultural phenomenon, is not unrelated to this need, as can be seen both in practice through many of the products designed with sustainable values, and in theory through the numerous publications that are being produced around issues related to sustainable processes. However, the complexity of the significance of sustainable design demands a critical approach to the concept of sustainability in order to establish a disambiguation of the term, which is misused in many contexts. This paper offers a global analysis that integrates the origins, evolution, components and situation of sustainable design in the socio-economic framework, with the aim of breaking with partial approaches and helping to understand the term correctly, while proposing the basis for moving towards a change in the current model. In order to disambiguate the term of sustainable design, this study uses a methodology based both on the analysis of works by relevant authors in the design field (Bonsiepe, Manzini, Margolín, Papanek, Cortina) and on the analysis of relevant bibliographical sources belonging to different fields, such as economic, business, ecological and social, establishing relationships and differentiations with the terms of ecodevelopment, ecodesign, globalism, growth, ecological balance and circular economy. The results of the present work show that for the disambiguation of the term sustainability it is necessary to simultaneously consider 5 areas: economic, political, environmental, social and cultural, and point out the current pre-eminence of an economicist vision of the term that is made visible through an excessive faith in technology, a biased vision of sustainability that benefits the current economic system, the integration of the social factor exclusively from the responsibility of the company, and a vision of the future based on a design that lacks the necessary critical foundation to stop feeding a culture based on unsustainable consumption and production models. As this is a timely topic, the relevance of this study for the field of design lies in two aspects: on the one hand, it allows the current designer to better understand the concept of sustainability, moving it away from a biased view, normally oriented only towards commercial purposes; on the other hand, in the field of education, the results of the study can be easily integrated into the curriculum of the current Degrees in Industrial Design, allowing the students and future designers to enrich their training with a more complete and critical view of the term, while at the same time allowing them to understand the need to integrate ethical values into the design process.

El propósito de este artículo es analizar qué valores promueve la uni-versidad en la construcción de un modelo basado en la educación intercultural inclusiva. La metodología utilizada es el estudio de caso y se han obtenido datos a través de entrevistas al equipo rectoral y los servicios, grupos focales a docentes y estudiantes y se ha realizado un análisis documental de los principales documentos de la institución. Los principales resultados obtenidos se dividen en 3 bloques: 1) los valores interculturales inclusivos que promueve la universidad, 2) las creencias de los participantes respecto a estos valores y 3) las propues-tas de mejora. Como conclusión podemos destacar que, a día de hoy, la universidad aún se basa en un modelo más integrador que inclusivo., The purposte of this article is to analyse the university promoted values in a model based construction for an inclusive intercultural education. The methodology used is the case study, data have been ob-tained through interviews with the Rectories team and services, focus groups with teachers and students and an analysis of the institution official documents. The main results obtained are divided into 3 bloc-ks: 1) The inclusive intercultural values promoted by the University, 2) participants beliefs of these values and 3) proposals for improvement.. As a conclusion, so far, we can emphasize that the university is still based on a more integrative model than an inclusive one.

La pandemia SARS-CoV-2 es una emergencia sanitaria global y necesitamos conocer más sobre ella. Los pacientes con riesgo cardiovascular y renal previo se han identificado como especialmente vulnerables para una mayor morbimortalidad cuando sufren la COVID-19, y una proporción considerable de pacientes pueden desarrollar una lesión vascular en el contexto de la enfermedad que conlleva una mayor letalidad. Las complicaciones cardiovasculares y renales representan un problema, y es probable que en un futuro próximo puedan suponer una amenaza para los pacientes que han sobrevivido a la COVID-19. Como médicos no podemos olvidar que durante una epidemia como esta otras enfermedades ----crónicas---- siguen presentes, y los pacientes continúan precisando atención. Estamos obligados a vigilar de una forma incluso más intensa sus tratamientos y el grado de control. Además, no debemos olvidar que las situaciones urgentes siguen presentándose en esta situación de pandemia y precisan atención rápida; en esta situación actual es muy probable que muchos pacientes, por miedo, no hayan buscado atención médica. La situación durante la epidemia y la incertidumbre de la época post COVID-19 exige la intensificación en el control y seguimiento de la enfermedad cardiovascular y renal de nuestros pacientes. La atención primaria constituye un nivel asistencial clave para el cuidado de la población con enfermedad cardiovascular. Del mismo modo, y ante este nuevo escenario sanitario, necesitamos impulsar las medidas de prevención y control que emanen de los estudios actualmente en desarrollo. Ahora más que nunca necesitamos la investigación, crucial para mejorar el pronóstico cardiovascular y renal de nuestros pacientes., The SARS-CoV-2 pandemic is a global health emergency and we need to know more about it. Patients with cardiovascular risk and previous kidney risk have been identified as especially vulnerable for greater morbidity and mortality when they suffer from COVID-19. A considerable proportion of patients can develop a vascular lesion in the context of the disease that entails a greater lethality. Cardiovascular and renal complications represent a problem and, probably in the near future, may pose a threat to patients who have survived COVID-19. As physicians, we cannot forget that during an epidemic like this, other chronic diseases are present, and patients continue to require care. We are obliged to monitor even more intensely their treatments and control degree. Furthermore, we must not forget that urgent situations continue to arise in this pandemic situation and require prompt attention. In this current situation, it is very likely that many patients, out of fear, have not sought medical attention. The situation during the epidemic and the uncertainty of the post-COVID-19 period, requires intensification in the control and monitoring of cardiovascular and kidney disease in our patients. Primary care constitutes a key level of care for the care of the population with cardiovascular disease. Likewise, and in the face of this new health scenario, we need to promote the prevention and control measures that emanate from the studies currently underway. Now, more than ever, we need research, crucial to improve the cardiovascular and renal prognosis of our patients.

Representation of industrial products in the early stages of design: Drawing and artistic expression in industrial design

Comunicació presentada a ICERI 2018 11th annual International Conference of Education, Research and Innovation (Seville, Spain. 12-14 November, 2018), Hand drawing is a basic tool for industrial designers, as it allows them to represent and communicate concepts in an agile way during the initial design phase. Although we can find subjects related to drawing in the first years of all university degrees in industrial design, the way to implement the necessary activities is not always the most appropriate, and it may happen that, despite having practiced sketching, at the end of the course the students do not have the necessary skills to communicate their ideas effectively or adequately represent the reality that surrounds them. This paper proposes twelve groups of activities designed to help industrial design students acquire skills related to hand drawing. The activities were implemented during the second course of the Degree in Industrial Design and Product Development Engineering at Universitat Jaume I, improving those implemented during the last course. The paper analyzes and discusses the positive results of the innovations introduced, which improved the mean grade of the course by 4.48% with respect to the grade obtained the previous year.
