COMPREHENSIVE TRANSCRIPTOME ANALYSIS OF ARTEMIA FRANCISCANA ACROSS DEVELOPMENTAL STAGES USING ILLUMINA AND NANOPORE SEQUENCING [DATASET]

Extremophiles evolved capacities to survive extended exposure to harsh environmental conditions such as complete desiccation (anhydrobiosis) and freezing (cryobiosis). Accumulation of the three-carbon polyhydric alcohol glycerol is commonly observed in anhydrobiotic organisms, although it is considered to preferentially enhance cryobiosis rather than anhydrobiosis. Here, using dormant stages of the halophilic extremophile crustacean Artemia franciscana, we show that this role is reversed. We find that A. franciscana and related branchiopods evolved co-opted entomoglyceroporin (Eglp)-like aquaporin-type channels previously only characterized in hexapods. Phylogenomic and site-directed mutagenesis analyses indicate that EglpL orthologs likely evolved during the early Cambrian in the common ancestor of the Pancrustacea. RNAi-mediated knockdown experiments show that the A. franciscana EglpL glycerol transporter is subfunctionally co-regulated with canonical aquaglyceroporins (Glps) to mediate glycerol accumulation in the diapause cysts. Termination of diapause using either desiccation or hydrogen peroxide and further exposure of the cysts to freezing suggest that the acquired glycerol plays a more critical role in anhydrobiosis rather than cryobiosis. These findings uncover the essential role of evolutionary divergent aquaporin-type glycerol channels in the accrual of glycerol in an anhydrobiotic organism and reveal a previously overlooked function of this polyol for desiccation tolerance, Spanish Ministry of Science, Innovation and Universities (MICIU/AEI/https://doi.org/10.13039/501100011033) and the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) “A way of making Europe” (European Union), Grant no. INP DATA FROM ANTARCTICA, PRINCESS ELISABETH STATION AND WEST OF AND ON THE NORTHERN ANTARCTIC PENINSULA [DATASET BUNDLED PUBLICATION]

Ice nucleating particles (INPs) are important atmospheric particles influencing the formation of ice in clouds. Their sources and atmospheric concentrations currently are subject of plenty of research. The here provided data on INPs (Ice Nucleating Particles) were derived from particles collected onto filters for two separate projects: 1) Sampling during two austral summers 2020/2021 and 2021/2022, for the CLIMB project (How do aerosol-CLoud Interactions influence the surface Mass Balance in East Antarctica?) at the Belgian Princess Elisabeth station (PES), a zero emission station, installed on a mountain ridge of Utsteinen Nunatak. 2) Sampling during a field campaign during PI-ICE (Polar atmosphere ice-ocean Interactions: Impact on Climate and Ecology) west of and on the northern Antarctic Peninsula in January until March 2019. Filters were analyzed at the TROPOS ice-lab in Germany, using well established off-line techniques. Detailed information on sampling and data evaluation are given in the abovementioned publication which this data-set accompanies. Measured frozen fractions are provided for samples, field blinds and heated samples, INP concentrations are provided for samples both with and without subtracting the background, Furthermore, this work was supported by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) in the framework of the priority programme 1158 “Antarctic Research with comparative investigations in Arctic ice areas” by a grant (HE-6770/3-1). This dataset comprises seven final migrated and time-depth converted multi-channel seismic profiles (pwg106, pwg112, pwg120, pwg130, pwg134, pwg140, and pwg150). These data were acquired by WesternGeco® between 1998 and 1999. AIR-SEA INTERACTION: HEAT AND MOMENTUM FLUXES BASED ON DATA RECORDS FROM THE R/V ANGELES ALVARINO AROUND SPANISH WATERS (2013-2023)

Horizontal spatial co-ordinates, Date and time, Air temperature, Atmospheric humidity, Solar Radiation, Wind strength and direction, Skin temperature of the water column, This dataset presents air-sea interaction fluxes derived from meteorological and sea surface (thermosalinometer) data collected between 2013 and 2023 aboard the R/V Angeles Alvarino operated by the Spanish Institute of Oceanography (IEO; IEO-CSIC since 2022).
The files include sensible (SHFL) and latent (LHFL) heat (positive towards the atmosphere), as well as momentum fluxes (MOFL, representing wind stress directed towards the sea surface). These were computed using the bulk aerodynamic approximation (Large and Yeager, 2009), which include atmospheric and oceanic measurements. Accordingly, the datasets also provide both meteorological and thermosalinometer data recorded along the vessel's trajectory, which are essential for these calculations.
Meteorological variables used for calculations include atmospheric pressure at sea level (ATMS), air temperature (DRYT), relative humidity (RELH), wind speed (WSPD), and total incident radiation (RDIN), which encompasses both longwave and shortwave components. Although RDIN is not directly used for flux calculations, it is included because it complements the heat storage balance of the ocean alongside the flux variables. The sea surface temperature is stored as TEMP.
The monthly files are stored in monthly Medar/Medatlas-format (Lowry et al., 2024). with hourly resolution. They are named as follows: "29AJ_YYYYMM.dat", where "29AJ" identifies the vessel (according to C17 SeaDataNet vocabulary),"YYYY" represents the year, and "MM" indicates the month. The dataset has undergone quality control procedures in accordance with SeaDataNet guidelines (Schaap and Lowry, 2010). As per the Medar/Medatlas format, quality control flags are included in an additional column to supplement the described variables
The calculation of air-sea interaction fluxes depends on the simultaneous availability of meteorological and thermosalinometer data. When the required variables are unavailable, the flux columns are omitted. However, the remaining experimental variables are preserved, as they provide independent scientific value, contributing to the interpretation of flux signs, trends, proportionality, and behavior., This work has been carried out within the framework of the study of heat fluxes and atmosphere-ocean interactions in the context of climate change (JAE-INTRO-ICU 23 01472 fellowship, CSIC). AIR-SEA INTERACTION: HEAT AND MOMENTUM FLUXES BASED ON DATA RECORDS FROM THE R/V CORNIDE DE SAAVEDRA AROUND SPANISH WATERS (2011-2013)

Atmosphere, Physical oceanography., This dataset presents air-sea interaction fluxes derived from meteorological and sea surface (thermosalinometer) data collected between 2011 and 2013 aboard the R/V Cornide de Saavedra, which is currently decommissioned and was operated by the Spanish Institute of Oceanography (IEO).
The files contain sensible heat flux (SHFL) and latent heat flux (LHFL), both positive towards the atmosphere, as well as momentum fluxes (MOFL), representing wind stress directed towards the sea surface. These fluxes were computed using the bulk aerodynamic approximation (Large and Yeager, 2009), which combines atmospheric and oceanic measurements. Accordingly, the datasets also include meteorological and thermosalinometer data recorded along the vessel's trajectory, which are essential for these computations.
The meteorological variables used in the calculations include atmospheric pressure at sea level (ATMS), air temperature (DRYT), relative humidity (RELH), wind speed (WSPD), and total incident radiation (RDIN), which encompasses both longwave and shortwave components. Although RDIN is not directly involved in the flux calculations, it is included as it complements the ocean's heat storage balance alongside the flux variables.The sea surface temperature is stored as TEMP.
The monthly files are stored in Medar/Medatlas format (Lowry et al., 2024) with hourly resolution. They are named as follows: "29CS_YYYYMM.dat", where: "29CS" identifies the vessel (as per the C17 SeaDataNet vocabulary), "YYYY" represents the year, and "MM" indicates the month. The dataset has undergone quality control procedures in accordance with SeaDataNet guidelines (Schaap and Lowry, 2010). As per the Medar/Medatlas format, quality control flags are included in an additional column to supplement the described variables.
The calculation of air-sea interaction fluxes depends on the simultaneous availability of meteorological and thermosalinometer data. When the required variables are unavailable, the flux columns are omitted. However, the remaining experimental variables are preserved, as they provide independent scientific value, contributing to the interpretation of flux signs, trends, proportionality, and behavior., This work has been carried out within the framework of the study of heat fluxes and atmosphere-ocean interactions in the context of climate change (JAE-INTRO-ICU 23 01472 fellowship, CSIC). MARINE DATA FROM CONTINUOUS ACQUISITION SYSTEMS ON BOARD THE R/V MIGUEL OLIVER IN SPANISH WATERS IN THE FRAMEWORK OF AIR-SEA INTERACTION STUDIES (2014-2023)

These data have been analyzed within the framework of air-sea interaction flux studies along Spanish waters. Although atmospheric pressure data are not available in the considered records—making it impossible to calculate air-sea fluxes using the bulk approximation—the remaining variables retain scientific value and are therefore revised, included and presented in this dataset.
