DATASET OF PESTICIDES, PHARMACEUTICALS AND PERSONAL CARE PRODUCTS OCCURRENCE IN WETLANDS OF SAUDI ARABIA

The following dataset shows 4 tables with the occurrence of CUPs and PPCPs in the different environmental matrices. For both shallow lakes, Al-Asfar and Al-Hubail, the sites 3, 4 and 5 were located in the shallow lake, while site 1 was located in irrigation channels, which provide wastewater (from farms, factories and/or domestic sewage) to each lake. Site 2 was located between the end of the irrigation channels and the mouth of each lake. Detailed information of each sampling site is provided in the related article [1]. Table 1 shows the occurrence of CUPS and PPCPs in water samples, while tables 2, 3 and 4 show the occurrence in sediments, soil and plants (wild flora Phragmites australis) respectively. In order to make the table easier to understand the data has been filtered, eliminating in each table, those compounds that were not detected in the sampling sites. A detailed list of the analyzed compounds is provided in the related article [1]. Furthermore, the CUPs acetochlor, acrinathrin, alachlor, atrazine, atrazine-deethyl, atrazine-deisopropyl, azinphos-ethyl, azinphos-methyl, buprofezin, carbofuran, chlotianidin, coumaphos, diclofenthion, dimethoate, diuron, 2,4-dimethylaniline (DMA), 2,4-dimethylphenylformamide (DMF), 2,4-dimethylphenyl-N′-methylformamidine (DMPF), ethion, etofenprox, fenthion, fenthion sulfoxide, fipronil, flumethrin, hexythiazox, malathion, methiocarb, metolachlor, molinate, omethoate, parathion-ethyl, parathion-methyl, propanil, propazine, pyriproxyphen, simazine, spinosyn A, spinosyn C, spinosyn D, terbumeton, terbumeton-deethyl, terbutryn and tolclophos-methyl and the PPCPs allopurinol, amoxicillin, chloramphenicol, furosemide, indomethacin, norfloxacin and thiamphenicol were not detected in the samples. In addition, the tables also show the total accumulated contamination for each contaminant and matrix, which provides and insight of the overall presence (and use) of each compound in the area., The data set presents the occurrence of 59 currently used pesticides (CUPs) and 33 pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs), from wetland areas, in Saudi Arabia, impacted by wastewater discharge. Wetlands are valuable ecosystems, but are very fragile and easily affected by anthropogenic pressure [1], [2], [3], [4], [5], [6]. The occurrence of organic contaminants provides understanding about their fate and possible risk for humans and environment. Up to our knowledge, this is the first report on the occurrence of the mentioned organic pollutants in shallow lakes in Saudi Arabia, and the first time these compounds are analyzed in wild flora. Samples of water, sediment, soil and plants were extracted via ultrasound assisted extraction (UAE) and solid phase extraction (SPE). The compounds determination was performed using ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry (HPLC-MS/MS). Laser-induced Breakdown Spectrocopy (LIBS) analyses of glass without grisaille (body surface) and the grisaille itself were performed using laser excitation at 266 nm (Nd:YAG laser, 6 ns pulses, 10 Hz repetition rate; Quantel Brilliant) and a 0.30 m spectrograph with a 1200 grooves/mm grating (TMc300 Bentham) coupled to an intensified charged coupled detector (ICCD, 2151 Andor Technologies). The fluence was of 6.6 J cm− 2. LIBS spectra were recorded with a gate delay and width of 100 ns and 3 μs, respectively. For the Laser-induced Fluorescence (LIF) analyses, the same equipment described above was used. However, time gate was operated with a zero-time delay, the grating was 300 lines/mm and the number of accumulations of 25. The fluence was 6 × 10− 3 J cm− 2. A home-made nonlinear optical microscope (NLOM) was used for Multi-Photon Excitation Fluorescence (MPEF) measurements of grisaille thickness with a mode-locked Ti:Sapphire femtosecond laser. The laser emits at 800 nm, with an average power of 680 mW, delivering 70 fs pulses at a repetition rate of 80 MHz and a laser power of 6–9 mW. The laser beam was modulated using a chopper at a frequency of 130 Hz and conducted to the sample through the aperture of a microscope objective lens (M Plan Apo HL 50X, Mitutoyo, NA 0.42). The focal plane of the laser was selected with motorized translation XYZ stages (Standa 8MVT100-25-1 for XY and Standa 8MTF for Z). In-depth cross section imaging of carbon coated glasses decorated with grisaille paint was carried out by Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscope (FESEM) with a Hitachi S-4800 cold cathode equipment, working with acceleration voltage of 15 kV. An Oxford X-Max of 20 mm2 system coupled to the electron microscope with resolution of 125 eV (Mg Kα) was used for Energy Dispersive X-Ray Spectroscopy (EDS) microanalyses. This dataset is subject to a Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International (CC BY 4.0) License., This is the experimental dataset used in the paper Talanta, 230: 122314 (2021) (http://hdl.handle.net/10261/244443) in which the thickness and composition of grisaille paints in four Spanish historical stained glasses, named Balmaseda (A; 19th century), Girona (B; 18th century), Leon (C; 13th century) and Goyeneche (D; early 20th century) after their place of origin, have been determined. The samples are glass fragments without value for their replacement available from previous conservation works made by some of the authors. This data set includes the results of the chemical and physical characterization of grisaille with a set of optical and spectroscopic techniques, including non-invasive techniques such as the emerging Nonlinear Optical Microscopy (NLOM) in the modality of Multi-Photon Excitation Fluorescence (MPEF). This allows determining the thicknesses values of the historical grisaille paint layers on the basis of their intrinsic fluorescence without photochemical and physical damage. The results obtained (FWHM values of depth scan after refractive index correction) show significant consistency and agreement with those obtained from traditional Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscope (FESEM) in which mean thickness varies between 26-78 µm. Scanning Electron Microscope coupled with Energy Dispersive X-Ray Spectroscopy (FESEM-EDS) and Laser Induced Breakdown Spectrosocopy (LIBS) show the elemental composition of both the body glass and the grisaille paint in the 4 samples according to the respective emission lines of the main and minor components. This collection is a catalogue of otolith stored in a database.The database is regularly updated and at present (06/17/2014) it contains a total of 4556 high resolution images corresponding to 1381 species and 216 families from the Mediterranean Sea, Antarctic Ocean (Weddell Sea, Ross Sea, Antarctic Peninsula), Atlantic Ocean (Argentina, Uruguay, South-western Islands, Gulf of Mexico, USA, Canada, Baltic Sea, North Sea, Ireland Sea, Cantabric Sea, Portugal, Madeira, Canary Islands, Morocco, Cabo Verde, Senegal, Gabon, Namibia), Indic Ocean (Madagascar, Tanzania, Red Sea, Iran) and Pacific (Australia, New Zealand, New Caledonia, Muroroa, Peru, Ecuador, Canada, Alaska).AFORO website offers an open online catalogue of otolith images and its associated shape analysis through pattern recognition techniques applying Fourier transform (FT), curvature space scale (CSS) and wavelet analysis (WT). This site also includes an Automatic Taxon Identification such allows to search and identify directly using query images of otholits. Recently, AFORO has incorporated 3D otoliths.

REAL JARDÍN BOTÁNICO: DIBUJOS DE LA REAL EXPEDICIÓN BOTÁNICA DEL NUEVO REINO DE GRANADA (1783-1816), DIRIGIDA POR J.C. MUTIS

[EN] This Collection of Botanical Iconography of the 18th century is the most relevant of the Flora of Colombia, and one of the best in the world, both from a scientific and artistic point of view. These are the original drawings made by the artists of the Expedition of the Royal Botanic Expedition of the New Kingdom of Granada, under the direction of José Celestino Mutis. During thirty years, the expeditionaries collected specimens in the territories of Colombia and Ecuador, which were illustrated by the artists. As a result this collection has reached our days, and has been admired by scientists like Carlos Linnaeus and Alexander von Humboldt. Since 2002, it has been recognized by the UNESCO as Memory of the World Register for Latin America and the Caribbean (MOWLAC).The data set includes information belonging to 5,796 records from a total of 7,167, including the scientific name, as well as subsequent identifications and revisions made by the specialists of the "Flora of the New Kingdom of Granada". This work is divided in various volumes in publishing process since 1952 thanks to an agreement between the Spanish and Colombian governments., [ES] Esta colección de iconografía botánica del siglo XVIII es la más relevante para la flora de Colombia, pero también una de las mejores del mundo, tanto desde el punto de vista científico como artístico. Se trata de los dibujos originales realizados por los artistas de la Real Expedición Botánica del Nuevo Reino de Granada, bajo la dirección de José Celestino Mutis. Durante treinta años los expedicionarios recolectaron especímenes en los territorios de Colombia y Ecuador, que fueron ilustrados por los artistas. El resultado fue esta colección, ya en su momento admirada por científicos de la talla de Carlos Linneo y Alexander von Humboldt. Desde el año 2002, tiene el reconocimiento del Registro de Memoria del Mundo de la UNESCO para América Latina y el Caribe (MOWLAC). El conjunto de datos que se ofrece incluye información de 5.796 registros de un total de 7.167, incluyendo el nombre científico y las identificaciones y revisiones posteriores, realizadas por los especialistas de la “Flora del Nuevo Reino de Granada”, obra que se viene publicando desde 1952 gracias a un acuerdo entre los gobiernos de España y Colombia.

La liquenoteca general consta, aproximadamente, de unos 5.000 ejemplares ordenados alfabéticamente, a los que hay que añadir unas 700 muestras pendientes de intercalar, fruto de diversas donaciones como las exsiccatas de Suecia y material recolectado por P. Font Quer, Palau Ferrer, X. Llimona, etc.También se conservan las colecciones de Werner (3.200 muestras), las caliciales de Tibell (199 muestras) y las recolecciones de Llenas (300 muestras) y Longino Navás (135 muestras), procedentes estas dos últimas de la donación de la Real Academia de Ciencias y Artes de Barcelona al Instituto Botánico en 1925.Hay que indicar la existencia de colecciones de líquenes dentro de la sección de criptógamas de los herbarios históricos de la familia Salvador, Bernades, Ramon de Bolòs, Vayreda y Trèmols. También hay algunas muestras provenientes de América del Sur, seguramente enviadas a Llenas, y las exsiccatas de Lojka, enviadas al parecer a R. de Bolòs.En GBIF son consultables 3.913 líquenes de la colección general, 75 líquenes de la colección F.X. Bolòs, la totalidad de la colección de caliciales de Tibell (199 especímenes, 13 de ellos son tipos descritos por Tibell o Titov), 1984 líquenes (entre ellos 257 tipos) de la colección de Werner y 324 líquenes de la colección Llenas.

BIOLOGICAL REFERENCE COLLECTIONS ICM-CSIC

The marine Biological Reference Collections (CBR) are located at the Institute of Marine Sciences (ICM-CSIC) in Barcelona, Spain. The CBR are a Unit of Service where around 15000 referenced species are preserved, catalogued and maintained for their study. The most represented marine groups at the CBR are fish, crustaceans, molluscs and echinoderms, but also other groups are present. The studies based on the CBR specimens are focused on biodiversity, biogeography, taxonomy (type species), invasive and alien species, and genetic analysis. Several PhD theses have also been carried out in collaboration with the CBR.The CBR are a reference point for the marine biodiversity of the Mediterranean Sea, but in their facilities the CBR also hold specimens from all the oceans (Atlantic, Pacific, Indian, Antarctic and Arctic). The Collections are constantly receiving new specimens and updating. The main sources of specimens are oceanographic surveys and different kind of sampling programs carried out by the research projects run by the ICM-CSIC. However, the CBR have also received (in the past and currently) different collections donated by naturalists, researchers, other institutions, and particulars. The CBR were created in 1981, in the earlier history of the ICM-CSIC, by Jaume Rucabado, Domingo Lloris and Concepción Allué. The Collections were later recognized and catalogued by the Spanish Ministry of Culture in 1990. In the last decade, the CBR initiated a new stage where the information was digitized and the physical preservation of specimens updated to the new rules (such as change from formaldehyde to ethanol). The CBR are now part of GBIF (Global Biodiversity Information Facility), thus making public and available all data collections and their metadata. We have also incorporated the use of Geographical Information Systems (GIS) to monitor and study the geographical distribution of our specimens and moreover, the CBR started to act as repository of DNA voucher collections for genetic analyses.As a unit of service of the ICM-CSIC we think that education and outreach of marine science is of crucial importance for the society and for that reason the CBR take active part in several outreach activities with schools, universities and general public. [EN] The Collection of Decapod and Stomatopod Crustaceans of the Cádiz Oceanographic Center (CCDE-IEOCD) arose from the need to have to identify specimens of crustaceans from surveys carried out by the Spanish Institute of Oceanography in African waters. Since 2005, specimens began to be collected, with 2011 being the year in which an exhaustive taxonomic review was carried out, from which the collection was officially created.A number of 1786 records (more than 4600 specimens) belonging to the Collection of Decapoda and Stomatopoda Crustaceans from the Oceanographic Center of Cadiz (CCDE-IEOCD) are made available to GBIF. These records account for 70% of the total number of specimens currently hosted in this collection. These specimens were mostly collected in trawl surveys carried out by the Instituto Español de Oceanografía (IEO) in African waters of Morocco, Mauritania, Senegal, The Gambia, Guinea-Bissau, Guinea, Equatorial Guinea, Namibia and Mozambique, in other surveys carried out in Spanish waters of the Gulf of Cádiz or the Cantabrian Sea, or in Porcupine Bank (Ireland). It also houses specimens from the 50s of the last century, donated by the Instituto de Ciencias Marinas de Andalucía (ICMAN-CSIC). In addition, we aim to have a molecular database (DNA barcode) of all the species deposited in the CCDE-IEOCD, as well as the storage of all the voucher specimens used for barcoding. There are currently 7% voucher specimens with their barcodes available., [EN] The general objective of the EcoAfrik project is to study the biodiversity of benthic ecosystems on the continental shelves and slopes off West and East Africa, with special attention to Northwest Africa (CCLME region). Tjis involves the study and identification of more than 40,000 specimens of benthic invertebrates collected in waters off Morocco, Mauritania, Senegal, The Gambia, Guinea-Bissau, Cape Verde, Namibia and Mozambique http://www.ecoafrik.esThe COLECTAX program aims to create, develop and maintain a natural archive of marine fauna in the IEO. The correct taxonomic identification and revision of the species of fish and invertebrates hosted in our collections is the first step for the dissemination of biodiversity inventory in different marine areas. The accessibility to the database of the collections and its material will be key to the scientific research. The IEO currently has thousands of specimens of fish and invertebrates from very different geographical areas deposited in its reference collections in the Centers of Malaga, Cádiz, Tenerife and Vigo. It is especially relevant the material coming from the Atlantic coasts of Africa, due to their abundance and to the presence of numerous rare deep water species., [ES] La Colección de Crustáceos Decápodos y Estomatópodos del Centro Oceanográfico de Cádiz (CCDE-IEOCD) surgió a partir de la necesidad de tener que identificar ejemplares de crustáceos procedentes de campañas llevadas a cabo por el Instituto Español de Oceanografía en aguas Africanas. Desde 2005 se comenzaron a recolectar ejemplares, siendo el 2011 el año en que se realizó una exhaustiva revisión taxonómica a partir de la cual se creó la colección oficialmente.Se ponen a disposición de GBIF 1786 registros (más de 4600 especímenes) pertenecientes a la colección de Crustáceos Decápodos y Estomatópodos del Centro Oceanográfico de Cádiz (CCDE-IEOCD). Estos registros suponen el 70% del total de ejemplares depositados actualmente en esta colección. Se trata de ejemplares procedentes, en su mayoría, de campañas de arrastre realizadas por el Instituto Español de Oceanografía (IEO) en aguas africanas de Marruecos, Mauritania, Senegal, Gambia, Guinea-Bissau, Guinea, Guinea Ecuatorial, Namibia y Mozambique, otras campañas realizadas en aguas españolas del Golfo de Cádiz o Mar Cantábrico, o en el Banco de Porcupine (Irlanda). También aloja ejemplares de la década de los 50 del siglo pasado, donados por el Instituto de Ciencias Marinas de Andalucía (ICMAN-CSIC). Además, se pretende tener una base de datos molecular (DNA barcode) de todas las especies depositadas en la CCDE-IEOCD, así como el almacenamiento de todos los especímenes voucher empleados para las codificaciones. En la actualidad se cuenta con 7% individuos voucher codificados., [ES] El objetivo general del proyecto EcoAfrik es estudiar la biodiversidad de los ecosistemas bentónicos en las plataformas y taludes continentales de África occidental y oriental, con especial atención al África noroccidental (región CCLME). Esto implica el estudio e identificación de más de 40,000 especímenes de invertebrados bentónicos recolectados en aguas de Marruecos, Mauritania, Senegal, Gambia, Guinea-Bissau, Cabo Verde, Namibia y Mozambique http://www.ecoafrik.esEl programa COLECTAX tiene como objetivo crear, desarrollar y mantener un archivo natural de fauna marina en el IEO. La correcta identificación y revisión taxonómica de las especies de peces e invertebrados alojados en nuestras colecciones es el primer paso para la difusión del inventario de biodiversidad en diferentes áreas marinas. La accesibilidad a la base de datos de las colecciones y su material será clave para la investigación científica. El IEO cuenta actualmente con miles de especímenes de peces e invertebrados de áreas geográficas muy diferentes depositadas en sus colecciones de referencia en los Centros de Málaga, Cádiz, Tenerife y Vigo. Es especialmente relevante el material procedente de las costas atlánticas de África, debido a su abundancia y a la presencia de numerosas especies raras de aguas profundas.

Dentro de esta actividad está el servicio a bases de datos internacionales.
