FAX Cruise (29HE19990801) carried out on the Research Vessel Hespérides in 1999, Filament and Fluxes (CANIGO). The campaign was carried out in Canarian waters, the main objective was the estimation of the flows of heat, water, salts nutrient and organic material in a filament of the upwelling of Northwest Africa, and to determine the effect of this transport towards oligotrophic waters on the metabolic balance of carbon in the planktonic communities of the Canary region. The specific objectives of the campaign were: 1) Determine the variability and bidimensional structure of the surface fields of temperature, heat of the ocean, nutrients, inorganic carbon and currents, in relation to the filament, during the study period. 2) Determine the three-dimensional structure and field of currents in the upper 300 m of the filament, in order to determine the origin and dynamics of the filament waters. 3) Determine the flow of particulate and dissolved organic matter exported by the filaments from the upwelling to the oceanic waters. 4) Determine the spatial variability of phytoplanktonic phytosynthetic parameters, pigment concentrations and spectral quality of light in the filament region, to allow the development of primary production models on a regional scale. 5) Determine the metabolic balance of microbial communities (community production and respiration) in the transition zone from eutrophic waters to oligotrophic open waters. 6) Observe the langranian displacement field of a body of water along the "jet" of the filament, by means of drifting Argos buoys. 7) Study the evolution of the stratification, vertical shear, concentration of nutrients, productivity and bio-optical parameters in the upper 200 m of the water column, near a drifting buoy that runs along the "jet" of the filament

LATITUD-III Cruise (29HE19991101) carried out on the Research Vessel Hespérides in 1999, Latitudinal patterns in regulation of the oceanic plankton production. Latitudinal patterns in regulation of the oceanic plankton production . The objective of the campaign is to study the variation of growth and mortality of the photosynthetic plankton cells throughout the different oceanographic zones of the Central Atlantic, with special interest in tropical gyres (or oceanic deserts) where the conditions are extreme for these organisms. During the study, techniques will be applied for the first time to identify necrotic and apoptopic cells (the two described processes of cell death) in marine phytoplankton, processes that have only been observed in the laboratory. The cell death of photosynthetic plankton is a process unknown until recently, which has important consequences for the oceanic carbon cycle

ESEPAC-2 Cruise (29HE20000116) carried out on the Research Vessel Hespérides in 2000, Experimental Stimulation of Coastal Antarctic Production. The objective of the ESEPAC-2000 campaign is to recognize the factors that limit Antarctic plankton production in order to predict changes in carbon fluxes associated with changes in Antarctic plankton production. The achievement of this objective will be carried out through: 1) Experimental verification of the processes that regulate the production of plankton, through large-scale manipulation experiments in mesocosms (large incubation bags, 30000-50000 liters). 2) The comparison of the experimentally obtained predictions with observations of the planktonic dynamics in Antarctic waters of contrasting areas, by means of oceanographic sampling in diverse zones of the Antarctic Peninsula

TASYO Cruise (29HE20000425) carried out on the Research Vessel Hespérides in 2000, Tecto-sedimentary transport from the continental margin of the Gulf of Cadiz to the Atlantic abyssal plains . The present project focuses on the geodynamic, stratigraphic and morpho-sedimentary study of the continental margin of the Gulf of Cadiz and its relationship with adjacent abyssal areas. It is intended to determine the tecto-sedimentary transport between the platform-slope of the Gulf of Cadiz and the abyssal plains of Herradura and Sena. The area is of special importance because it is very conditioned by one of the most gigantic phenomena of submarine sedimentary transport that can be known both in the Atlantic and in other oceanic areas of the world. This is due to a substrate in the sedimentary basin characterized by an olistostromica mass that conditions a high tectonic and sedimentary instability from the Mieocene to the present day
