“This is an Accepted Manuscript of an article published by Taylor & Francis in Industry and Innovation on 2020, available online: https://www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10.1080/13662716.2020.1792273”., [EN] This research considers the hypothesis that firms’ propensity to engage in R&D is linked both to their economic and structural characteristics and to variables related to their perception of science, their appraisal of the benefits and risks of investing in R&D, and their attitude towards the role science plays within the firm. Research is based on the results of the survey ‘Scientific culture, perception and attitudes towards science and innovation in the business sector’, administered to a representative sample of Spanish companies. The results obtained through logistic regression evidence that together with firms’ economic and financial characteristics, which have traditionally been considered crucial factors for engaging in R&D, firms’ perception of science is also a major factor when analysing the way in which they address these processes. I+D, This work was supported by the Spanish Ministry of Economy, Industry and Competitiveness under research project CSO2014-53293-R, and the Spanish Foundation for Science and Technology (FECYT) under research project FCT-16-10889, Peer reviewed

[EN] This study aims to analyze the individual and organizational variables related to a lack of interest in science and R&D among people with managerial positions at companies. It explores the components of their scientific culture, their perception of science and their attitudes towards science and R&D (related to this lack of interest), as well as their socio-demographic profile and the characteristics of their companies. The study was carried out through the survey “Scientific culture, perception, and attitudes towards science and innovation in the Spanish business sector”, the first of its type in Spain and a frontrunner at an international level in terms of studies on perception of science. The lack of interest in science is related to a low appreciation for the positive values associated with it and the scarce value allocated to scientific knowledge as a basis for making business decisions. When it comes to explaining the disinterest in applying it within the company, more pragmatic, applied and even everyday factors come into play, related to the companies’ performance and the prospective R&D benefits., [ES] El presente estudio tiene como objetivo analizar las variables individuales y organizativas relacionadas con el desinterés por la ciencia y la I+D entre personas con cargos directivos en empresas.

[EN] R&D investment can have important benefits for companies, but it entails a high inherent risk and does
not always produce the expected effects. One of the option to face R&D uncertainty is the collaboration with other
entities. This study analyses whether perceptions by companies of risks associated with science and R&D are linked
to relational capital strategies. This research is based on the results of the ‘Scientific culture, perception and attitudes
toward science and innovation in the Spanish business sector’ survey. We identify five different patterns in companies’
risk perception and test how relational capital strategies shaped them. The results evidence that R&D collaboration
is related to perceiving R&D as a risky and uncertain investment. In contrast, companies’ reluctance to join business
associations is associated with particular concern about how this type of investment could affect employment within

[EN] Industry has reached a prominent role in recent European scientific policies, related to a shift in the production model towards an intensive knowledge-based economy. In spite of that, an understanding of business engagement with science is still deficient. The aim of this study was to test the relation between firm managers’ perceptions of science and business engagement in research and development in their companies. This research is based on the results of the Scientific Culture at Enterprises 2016 survey, the first research tool specifically designed to investigate science perception in the business sector. Results show that what distinguishes a firm that is proactive toward R&D engagement is primarily the institutional knowledge of its managers about the scientific ecosystem and the variety of scientific sources they habitually consult. This research contributes to opening the black box of science perception in the business sector, focused on improving the design of public policies addressed to this actor, [ES] La industria ha desempeñado un papel relevante en las recientes políticas científicas europeas.

Este artículo está sujeto a una licencia CC BY 4.0, This research considers the hypothesis that firms’ propensity to undertake innovation activities is linked to variables related to their perception of science, their appraisal of the benefits and risks of R&D investing, and their attitude towards the role science plays within the firm, besides their economic and structural characteristics. We explore an empirical approach to studying the implications of managers’ perceptions and attitudes towards science and R&D on firms’ engagement in innovation. Research is based on the survey ‘Scientific culture, perception and attitudes towards science and innovation in the business sector’. Results evidence that corporate innovation decisions are not just a matter of money, and confirms the combined effect of a firm’s economic characteristics and perception of science on innovation engagement. Results confirm that managers’ attitude towards science and R&D is related to firms’ commitment to innovation, suggesting that their attitudes and behaviour in relation to science and investment in R&D should be given a more prominent role in S&T and innovation studies and in developing models of innovation in the future. This study provides some important implications for the management of innovation in the business sector. It stresses that innovation is related with managers having a perception of science and R&D that paves the way for the allocation of a firm’s resources to activities oriented towards knowledge generation and innovation. The results obtained here are still important regarding the way to address possible initiatives aimed at encouraging innovation in the business sector, This work was supported by the Spanish Ministry of Economy, Industry and Competitiveness (research project CSO2014-53293-R) and the Spanish Foundation for Science and Technology, FECYT (research project FCT-16-10889), No
