This article aims to determine whether it is possible to improve the Communicative Language Competence in all or some language skills (oral reception, written reception, oral production, written production and mediation) through an intervention based on three Lesson Plans (LPs) of Subtitling for the Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing (SDH), as one of the modes of Didactic Audiovisual Translation (DAT) for foreign language learning. The method applied in this study involves a quantitative analysis using descriptive statistical data: the Wilcoxon Signed-Rank Test and Mediation Analysis using PROCESS with Bootstrapping. This study aims to i) analyse the correlation between the initial Test of Integrated Skills (ITIS) and the Final Test of Integrated Skills (FITIS, and ii) find out to what extent the SDH activities as mediation variable impact on the results between the ITIS and the FITIS. This study was conducted among 167 participants from six Spanish universities during the academic year 2021-2022. The results obtained are consistent with previous research published within the TRADILEX project. Furthermore, these data demonstrate progress in learning across all skills, with a particular emphasis on improvements in oral production.
This article shows the preliminary design process for a tailor-made Initial Test of Integrated Skills (ITIS) specially adapted to the needs of TRADILEX, a project (2020-2023) funded by the Spanish Ministry of Science, Innovation and Universities to study the scope and validity of using audiovisual translation (AVT) tools to develop communicative competence in a foreign language. We also design a complete virtual AVT-based teaching platform that will help to promote faster and better EFL learning. In this paper we present one of the project's initial stages, i.e. the ITIS design and the methodological framework for the design process from draft stage to final product. The draft pilot ITIS was tested by specialists, who produced a series of reports and anticipated several potential problems that occurred when the test was carried out. We pay special attention to the changes and improvements made to the draft ITIS as well as its three-stage process and remedial measures. The validity of the ITIS is currently being tested with a pilot group. This article is part of the TRADILEX Project (2020-2023) and has been funded by a competitive call by the Spanish Ministry of Science, Innovation and Universities. This article provides further empirical validation of the tradilex didactic audiovisual translation methodology across diverse learning frameworks and educational contexts by means of a quantitative and comparative study. The scope was extended to multiple settings across Spain, by targeting a sample of 566 non-native English-speaking participants from eight Spanish higher education institutions, from which 155 completed 15 intermediate-level English lesson plans. The statistical analysis was conducted using SPSS software and an anova test, examining the results based on whether the lesson plans were implemented in face-to-face or online class environments. The results show how the learners’ language skills developed under the two modalities using five audiovisual translation methods, thus proving the validity of didactic audiovisual translation in Englishas-a-foreign-language teaching and learning. The tradilex methodology has proven effective in enhancing overall communicative competence, as evidenced by the findings of this study. Notably, no statistically significant differences were observed between online and face-to-face instructional modalities, suggesting that both environments facilitate successful language learning. These results contribute to the ongoing discourse on pedagogical effectiveness, providing valuable insights that may inform best practices and further empirical investigations in the field of applied linguistics and language education., [Resumen] Este artículo ofrece una nueva validación empírica de la metodología de traducción audiovisual con fines didácticos TRADILEX en diversos entornos de instrucción y contextos educativos por medio de un estudio cuantitativo y comparativo. [Resumen] Research on didactic audiovisual translation (AVT) has delivered fruitful results in the last decade and is gaining increasing attention in academia. The term “didactic AVT” was coined by Talaván (2020) to refer to the active application of different AVT modes in the foreign language classroom. Although subtitling and dubbing are the two AVT modes that have traditionally received more attention, research on other less popular modes, such as audio description (AD), subtitles for the deaf and hard of hearing (SDH) or voice-over are gaining momentum. In this paper, the results of a pilot study for an AD didactic sequence for the B1 level will be presented. This pilot study has been carried out within the TRADILEX project, a R&D+i project funded by the Spanish Ministry of Science and Innovation (2020-2023), which aims to perform quasi-experimental research to determine the degree of improvement in English as a foreign language (EFL) after the implementation of a methodological proposal that integrates different AVT modes. Using a mixed-method methodology that combines quantitative and qualitative data obtained from different data sources, the preliminary conclusions drawn bring to light that there are signs of improvement in the students’ production skills. PID2019-107362GA-I00 AEI/10.13039/501100011033. [Abstract] This paper assesses the validity of various modes of didactic audiovisual translation (DAT) in supporting foreign language learning, with a focus on a project conducted throughout 2022 and 2023. Fifty-five participants completed a comprehensive set of tasks, including an Initial Test of Integrated Skills (ITIS), a Final Test of Integrated Skills (FITIS), and a series of 30 piloted lesson plans—15 for B1 and 15 for B2 levels. These lesson plans followed a task-based learning structure and were designed around five modalities: subtitling, voice-over, dubbing, audio description, and SDH, in line with the methodological framework proposed by Talaván and Lertola (2022). Our findings suggest that all DAT modes contributed comparably to the development of language skills, linguistic components, and cross-curricular competences. Notably, revoicing techniques were perceived as particularly beneficial for enhancing oral skills. Participants reported high levels of engagement with the DAT-based project and expressed strong support for its recommendation to other language learners. Although some technical challenges were noted, participants also identified secondary gains in ICT skills.

[Abstract] The aim of this research is to showcase the versatility of Audiovisual Translation (AVT) as a resource in the language classroom. Didactic AVT helps students improve their communicative competence and linguistic skills in the foreign language (L2). Students also develop their digital competence by working with online resources and AVT editing software, and their intercultural competence by being exposed to authentic material in their L2. Mediation skills, as promoted by the CEFR (2001), are also developed with the implementation of didactic AVT. The literary review first introduces general concepts of didactic AVT, and later breaks down different AVT modes to focus on the benefits and potential downsides as classroom resources inherent to each one: subtitling, dubbing, subtitling for the deaf and hard of hearing (SDH) audio description (AD), and creative AVT. With the intention of exemplifying some practical applications of AVT modes as central tasks in Secondary school EFL classrooms, this paper presents four learning sequences which are based on the theoretical principles reported in the reviewed literature. These learning sequences are not meant to be prescriptive, but rather an example of potential ways to implement AVT in the classroom., [Resumen] El objetivo de esta investigación es mostrar la versatilidad de la Traducción Audiovisual (TAV) como recurso en el aula de idiomas. Estas secuencias de aprendizaje no pretenden ser prescriptivas, sino más bien un ejemplo de posibles formas de implementar TAV en el aula., This article has been developed within the frame of the research project TRADILEX, funded by the Spanish Ministry of Science, Innovation and Universities (PID2019-107362GA-I00)

The technological development of recent decades has led to the flourishing of new methodologies for teaching foreign languages such as didactic audiovisual translation (hereinafter, DAT) with the aim of improving communicative skills (Talaván, 2019). The aim of the present study is to determine the impact of the DAT methodological framework on the development of written production through audio description. The research methodology follows a quasi-experimental design and is quantitative in nature. The research was carried out in a sample of 52 experimental subjects who completed a complete audio-description sequence in six didactic units. An ad hoc instrument was used to measure written production, assessing the lexical diversity, readability and metadiscourse markers of the texts produced by the participants. Preliminary results indicate a significant improvement in the clarity of the written texts, possibly due to the use of condensation and reduction strategies used in TAD.

This paper assesses the validity of various modes of didactic audiovisual translation (DAT) in supporting foreign language learning, with a focus on a project conducted throughout 2022 and 2023.
El estudio ofrece perspectivas prometedoras sobre el valor pedagógico de las metodologías TAD para un aprendizaje de lenguas integral., This research has been funded by the R&D&i Project TRADILEX, which is affiliated with the “Universidad Nacional de Educación a Distancia” (UNED). Audiovisual translation (AVT) as a tool in the teaching/learning of a foreign language has increasingly attracted the attention of researchers in the latest years. The TRADILEX Project team is currently working on the pedagogic use of AVT in the teaching /learning of English as a Foreign language (EFL) in an online environment, in a good number of Spanish universities. This paper presents the results of the TRADILEX experience, carried out at the University of Zaragoza (Spain). The methodology designed and applied for that end has required the use of technological tools to guide students through different steps, from an Initial Test of Integrated Skills (ITIS) to a Final Test of Integrated Skills (FITIS), both designed by members of the team. On their way from the former to the latter, students were invited to carry out a series of B1-level tasks in five AVT modes. The materials previously designed and tested aimed at a progressive autonomy of the student in their advance in the lesson plans of each mode. The analysis of the results obtained in each of the AVT modes, as well as the comparative results between the ITIS and the FITIS will highlight the virtues of the methodology used.

This paper reports a mixed-method study on the factors shaping language learning through didactic audiovisual translation. The aim is to analyse the determinants influencing the effective implementation of an integrative project, revealing the strengths and weaknesses of the learning process. Data from 172 students were gathered through initial and final questionnaires, which offered insights into their perceptions of didactic audiovisual translation. The results demonstrate a noticeable shift in learners’ attitudes towards audiovisual translation as a language learning tool during the tasks. This transformation led to the recognition of potential benefits, not only in conventional modes like subtitling and dubbing but also in less recognised modes such as audio-description and subtitling for the deaf and hard of hearing.

Exploring the Impact of Didactic Dubbing on Speaking Skills and Motivation in English for Specific Purposes Settings
Zaguán. Repositorio Digital de la Universidad de Zaragoza
- Buil Beltrán, Paula
The field of Didactic Audiovisual Translation (DAT) is witnessing significant expansion, with growing research emphasis on areas such as listening skills, vocabulary acquisition, and intonation. Despite this, research within the domain of English for Specific Purposes (ESP) concerning DAT is still relatively scarce. This is noteworthy considering its potential to address the specific needs of ESP learners, including preparing for common challenges like job interviews, particularly among Spanish students learning a foreign language.
This paper aims to address ESP students’ needs through a mixed-method approach that analyses the responses of 95 ESP students in the School of Engineering and Architecture at the University of Zaragoza who completed a lesson plan on job interviews during the 2021/2022 academic year. These lesson plans were designed for practical sessions within the Technical English course to improve students’ speaking skills. To compare their effectiveness, students were divided into two groups: an experimental group (EG) using a DAT-based plan and a control group (CG) with a traditional curriculum. The study suggests that dubbing and traditional methods are effective while demonstrating that the continuous use of dubbing in the classroom would enhance speaking skills more effectively than traditional methods. Moreover, students perceive dubbing as beneficial for English oral skills, indicating high engagement with DAT in class, highlighting its potential for language learning.
Lay summary
Didactic audiovisual translation (DAT) is a fast-growing and unstoppable field, experiencing its apogee, with more research focusing on a wide range of aspects such as listening skills, vocabulary acquisition or intonation (Ávila-Cabrera & Rodríguez-Arancón, 2021; Bolaños García-Escribano et al., 2021; Couto-Cantero et al., 2021; Talaván & Lertola, 2022). Despite this, there is still an unexplored field that can benefit enormously from this methodology, English for Specific Purposes (ESP). Nowadays, research on DAT in ESP (Talaván, 2006; Ávila-Cabrera, 2021) is relatively scarce, and there is still untapped potential for its use in ESP teaching. Moreover, scholars such as Nunan (2004) and Català-Hall (2013) highlight the urgency of creating specific programmes that address the immediate needs that some learners may have while studying ESP. One of these necessities required by ESP students is the ability to learn how to hold and successfully pass a job interview. However, to do it, students need to master the topic while they foster their speaking skills, which is one of the Spanish students' handicaps while learning a foreign language (FL).
This paper seeks to solve these ESP students’ necessities by creating and implementing two lesson plans in the School of Engineering and Architecture at the University of Zaragoza; in the academic year 2021/2022, based on Job Interviews. The lesson plans were designed for being carried out in the practical sessions of the subject Technical English, a transversal elective course, to enhance students speaking skills. In order to make a comparative analysis, students were divided into two, an experimental group (EG) that counted with a lesson plan based on DAT and a control group (CG) that had a lesson plan based on traditional methodologies. The lesson aim was that, in the end, students were able to develop and express themselves in a professional situation like doing a job interview; thus, the lessons try to foster ESP students’ production skills within a communicative framework.
This paper presents, then, the methodology and the instruments used for the creation and implementation of the study together with an in-deep analysis in which quantitative and qualitative data are analysed. First, in each lesson, students had to complete a final task to obtain a mark of up to five points that were assessed by means of specific rubrics and compared among groups. The CG practical task was a role play, while the EG had a task of creative English dubbing. Then, students’ final perceptions obtained from a post-questionnaire are analysed, and a comparison among groups is made to see which group obtained the best results in their oral production skill development and which group felt more motivated throughout the lesson. This will lead us to the conclusion in which the strengths of this novel and creative methodology are highlighted by the analysis of the results obtained in each method and a comparison of the results from CG and EG.

These results contribute to the ongoing discourse on pedagogical effectiveness, providing valuable insights that may inform best practices and further empirical investigations in the field of applied linguistics and language education.
