Emotion regulation (ER) is a core transdiagnostic mechanism implicated in the development and maintenance of anxiety and depression. Although insomnia also plays a key role in these internalizing conditions, it has received comparatively less empirical attention. Moreover, the extent to which insomnia, above and beyond ER, contributes to anxiety and depressive symptoms at different severity levels remains poorly understood. A cross-sectional sample of 2352 adolescents (11–18 years old) completed validated measures assessing ER, insomnia, and symptoms of anxiety and depression. Based on their scores on the Depression, Anxiety and Stress Scales (DASS-21; Lovibond & Lovibond, 1995), participants were classified into four groups: clinical anxiety, subclinical anxiety, clinical depression, and subclinical depression. Within each severity group, hierarchical multiple regression analyses were conducted to determine the unique and incremental contribution of ER and insomnia to anxiety and depressive symptoms, after controlling for age and sex. ER significantly predicted anxiety and depression only within the clinical groups. Insomnia emerged as a significant predictor of anxiety in both subclinical and clinical groups, and of depression in the clinical group, over and above ER and demographic covariates. Across models, insomnia accounted for a greater proportion of explained variance compared to ER. These findings underscore the central role of sleep difficulties and ER as transdiagnostic mechanisms of internalizing psychopathology, particularly at higher symptom levels.

https://openpolicyfinder.jisc.ac.uk/id/publication/9290, Previous research reports that cybervictims are more likely to experience suicidal ideations. Gratitude and life satisfaction have shown to predict suicide risk, but they have rarely been explored in the cyberbullying context. Hence, this study examined the roles of gratitude and life satisfaction in suicide risk in cyberbullying situations. An initial sample of 858 adolescents participated in a prospective study, completing questionnaires assessing gratitude, life satisfaction, cyberbullying experiences and suicidal ideation. Results showed that low levels of gratitude and life satisfaction influence suicidal ideation in cybervictimized adolescents.

The scientific literature provides evidence that factors such as fear of missing out (FoMO) and emotional intelligence (EI) can be related to problematic internet behaviours, but few studies have been conducted on PSU in adolescents. This study aimed to examine how FoMO and EI might explain PSU in adolescents. Methods: The sample consisted of 537 students (12–17 years old) who completed scales assessing problematic smartphone use, fear of missing out, and emotional intelligence. Results: The results showed in both cases moderate, significant and positive correlations between PSU and FoMO, while significant and negative correlations between PSU and EI were observed. In addition, high FoMO and deficits in EI were found to explain part of the variance in PSU. Conclusions: The results are discussed based on the Theory of compensatory internet use. Because problematic smartphone use (PSU) is rising among adolescents, it is vital to analyze the potential causes and psychosocial consequences affecting this target population. Current theoretical frameworks suggest that specific personal core characteristics might predispose individuals to experience increases in this problematic behavior over time. Additionally, PSU has been conceptualized as a maladaptive coping mechanism to manage negative emotions. The present study aimed at analyzing a personal resource, critical thinking disposition, and a potential negative consequence, reduced academic engagement, and the underlying role of perceived stress and PSU in this association among Spanish adolescents. The sample consisted of 688 adolescents (54% females, 46% males) aged 12 to 18 years from Southern Spain. Participants completed self-report questionnaires to assess critical thinking disposition (VIA-Youth), perceived stress (Perceived Stress Scale), PSU (Smartphone Addiction Scale- Short Version), and academic engagement (Utrecht Work Engagement Scale-Students). We analyzed a serial mediation model using PROCESS (SPSS), in which critical thinking disposition was the independent variable, perceived stress and PSU were the first and second mediators, respectively, and academic engagement was the outcome variable. Our results indicated that lower critical thinking disposition was linked to increased perceived stress, which was associated with higher PSU, resulting in decreased academic engagement. These findings provide empirical support for the pathways model of PSU, the maladaptive coping theories, and the I-PACE model of behavioral addictions. Furthermore, we discuss our results highlighting the important implication of training adolescents to think critically regarding their smartphone usage to reduce their stress levels, to avoid using smartphones as a coping strategy, and hence, to improve their student's attitudes toward school., Parte del proyecto I+D+i PID2020-117006RB-I00, financiado por MCIN/AEI/10.13039/501100011033, Grupo de investigación Applied Positive Lab CTS-1048G-FEDER (Junta de Andalucía), Ayuda PPIT.UMA.A2.2019, financiada por la Universidad de Málaga (C. The aim of this study is to explore a model examining how emotional intelligence (EI), sex, depressive symptoms and suicidal thoughts and behaviours (STB) may interact. The sample included 380 Spanish adolescent bully-victims (61.6% boys; mean age = 14.38 years). The results indicated that EI is a significant negative predictor of decreased STB and that this relation is fully mediated by depressive symptoms. This effect was moderated by sex, such that the mediation is stronger for girls compared to boys. The promotion of EI may be core in the development of prevention programmes for suicide, especially among female bully-victims., Parte del proyecto I+D+i PID2020-117006RB-I00, financiado por MCIN/AEI/10.13039/501100011033, Grupo de investigación Applied Positive Lab CTS-1048G-FEDER (Junta de Andalucía), Contrato posdoctoral financiado por el Spanish Ministry of Science, Innovation and Universities (FJC2019-038942-I/ AEI/10.13039/501100011033).

https://openpolicyfinder.jisc.ac.uk/id/publication/15760, Problematic social media use (PSMU) has become an increasingly researched area in the general population, specifically among adolescents. Due to its association with poor well-being and negative consequences, it is important to have assessment instruments that are valid and reliable in evaluating PSMU. The Bergen Social Media Addiction Scale (BSMAS) is the most widely used scale to assess PSMU. The present study analyzed the psychometric properties of a Spanish version of the BSMAS among Spanish adolescents. The sample comprised 688 adolescents from Spain (54% girls), aged 12 to 18 years (M = 14.23 years) who completed a number of self-report questions and psychometric scales. The reliability, construct validity, concurrent validity, and criterion validity of the BSMAS were evaluated. Additionally, the measurement invariance by gender and age group was also calculated. The results indicated good reliability indices (coefficients’ range = 0.75–0.83). Moreover, PSMU was positively associated with problematic smartphone use, frequency of social networking site use, depression, anxiety, and loneliness and negatively associated with self-esteem and flourishing (r range = -0.16–0.65). Furthermore, configural, metric, and scalar invariance was established among boys and girls, and younger and older adolescents. The study provides preliminary evidence indicating that the Spanish BSMAS is a reliable and valid instrument to assess PSMU among Spanish-speaking adolescents., Parte del proyecto I+D+i PID2020-117006RB-I00, financiado por MCIN/AEI/10.13039/501100011033, Grupo de investigación Applied Positive Lab CTS-1048G-FEDER (Junta de Andalucía), Ayuda PPIT.UMA.A2.2019, financiada por la Universidad de Málaga (C. https://openpolicyfinder.jisc.ac.uk/id/publication/11771, The possible protective factor of gratitude on experiences of cyberbullying behaviours and anxiety symptomatology was examined. A sample of 981 adolescents (55.45% females) participated in a two-wave study, completing three self-report measures. There was a period of 16 weeks between the two data collections. The measuring instruments assessed gratitude (Gratitude Questionnaire: GQ-5), cybervictimisation (European Cyberbullying Intervention Project Questionnaire: ECIPQ) and anxiety symptomatology (Depression, Anxiety and Stress Scales: DASS). A serial mediation analysis was performed to examine the possible predictor role of gratitude on cybervictimisation and anxiety symptomatology. Outcomes reported that gratitude was related to cybervictimisation (Time 1) and anxiety symptomatology (Time 2). Furthermore, a sequential pathway was found from gratitude to cybervictimisation 16 weeks later, firstly through cybervictimisation (Time 1) and then through anxiety symptomatology (Time 2). These findings confirm previous research about the protective role of gratitude to minimise the negative impact of cyberbullying behaviours. Moreover, the first evidence on the potential protective role of gratitude for decreasing the likelihood of suffering cybervictimisation is provided., Parte del proyecto I+D+i PID2020-117006RB-I00, financiado por MCIN/AEI/10.13039/501100011033, Grupo de investigación Applied Positive Lab CTS-1048G-FEDER (Junta de Andalucía)

Problematic smartphone use (PSU) has been widely studied, and recent research has examined the affective and cognitive process risk factors that underlie its development and maintenance. Based on the Interaction of Person–Affect–Cognition–Execution model for problematic internet use, the present study analyzed the mediating role of cognitive emotion regulation strategies in the link between depressive symptomatology and PSU severity in adolescents. The sample consisted of 2,197 adolescents aged 12 to 19 years from southern Spain, who completed self-report questionnaires of depressive symptoms (Depression Anxiety Stress Scale–21), cognitive emotion regulation strategies (Cognitive Emotion Regulation Strategies Questionnaire), and PSU severity (Smartphone Addiction Scale–Short Version). We used the SPSS PROCESS macro to conduct parallel mediation analyses. The results demonstrated significant indirect/mediation effects from depressive symptoms to PSU severity through cognitive emotion regulation strategies, including other-blame, catastrophizing, rumination (i.e., maladaptive), and refocus on planning (i.e., adaptive). The implications of this study include that specific teaching about these strategies may help reduce PSU severity in adolescents., Parte del proyecto I+D+i PID2020-117006RB-I00, financiado por MCIN/AEI/10.13039/501100011033, Grupo de investigación Applied Positive Lab CTS-1048G-FEDER (Junta de Andalucía), Ayuda PPIT.UMA.A2.2019, financiada por la Universidad de Málaga (C. Teachers’ Subjective Happiness: Testing the Importance of Emotional Intelligence Facets Beyond Perceived Stress
RIUMA. Repositorio Institucional de la Universidad de Málaga

- Extremera-Pacheco, Natalio
Purpose: This study investigated which EI facets were the most predictive in explaining subjective happiness above
perceived stress in a relatively large sample of Spanish teachers.
Methods: The sample was composed of 1323 Spanish teaching professionals (821 females and 529 secondary school teachers) from
different educational centers located in Southern Spain. Predictive and
incremental validity was assessed with SPSS, and hierarchical regression analysis was used to predict subjective happiness from EI
facets beyond that accounted for by perceived stress.
Results: The results showed that all four EI facets correlated significantly with each other. Also, they all were positively and
significantly associated with subjective happiness, whereas perceived stress was negatively associated with happiness scores.
Moreover, self-emotion appraisal, use of emotions and regulation of emotions accounted for a significant amount of variance in the
prediction of satisfaction with life beyond the effects of sociodemographic variables and perceived stress.
Conclusion: This study extends the specific contribution of EI facets in predicting subjective happiness, rather than EI as a unified
construct, in a relatively large sample of Spanish teachers. Self-focused dimensions involving appraisal, use and regulation of emotions
appeared to be the most important predictors of happiness beyond stress experienced by teachers., Parte del proyecto I+D+i PID2020-117006RB-I00, financiado por MCIN/AEI/10.13039/501100011033, Grupo de investigación Applied Positive Lab CTS-1048G-FEDER (Junta de Andalucía)

https://openpolicyfinder.jisc.ac.uk/id/publication/10322, This multi-study investigation examined what magnitude of personal resources people need to flourish in their personal life and at work. We specifically looked at the interplay between emotional intelligence (EI) and core self-evaluations (CSE) in relation to flourishing, happiness, and work engagement. Guided by job demands-resources theory, this investigation was conducted through two separate studies (Ns1 = 391; Ns2 = 703) using path analysis with Spanish employees. Study 1 revealed that EI moderated the positive relationship between CSE and flourishing and work engagement so that this relationship was weaker among employees high (vs. low) in EI. Study 2 replicated this pattern for the relationships with happiness and work engagement. Facet-level analyses revealed that use of emotions was driving the moderation on flourishing in Study 1, whereas other-emotion appraisal was driving the moderation on work engagement in Study 2. Overall, these findings suggest that individuals low in CSE might benefit from higher levels of EI to enhance their flourishing.
