In the monumental task of safeguarding biodiversity in both natural and agricultural ecosystems, the prioritization of steppes and prairies is essential due to their high species richness, unique evolutionary history, ecosystem services, and cultural and economic importance.
In this chapter, we have aimed to straightforwardly examine the imminent threats that climate change poses to steppes and prairies over the next 50 years, alongside key strategies for mitigating them. From the expansive steppes of Mongolia to the vast prairies of central Canada, the intricate landscapes of southern Argentina, and the high-altitude ecosystems, we have navigated through distinct corners, exploring the complex challenges and opportunities that shape these crucial environments, playing a pivotal role in global biodiversity and climate regulation.
The challenges faced by steppes and prairies are multifaceted, encompassing recurring wildfires, soil degradation, water scarcity, and biodiversity threats. Human interventions, driven by misguided fire suppression and unsustainable land practices, have intensified these challenges. Climate change further exacerbates vulnerabilities, impacting soil health, vegetation cover, and water availability. Mitigating these challenges demands a holistic and interconnected approach. Embracing controlled burns, sustainable land management practices, and water conservation are pivotal steps. Preserving the delicate balance of these landscapes requires a blend of traditional ecological knowledge and modern technologies. International collaboration, research, and monitoring serve as corner-stones for informed decision-making. Acknowledging the vastness of such a task, it becomes even more crucial to reiterate and act upon well-known steps:
* Recognition of significance: Appreciate the biological and ecological importance of steppes and prairies, shifting statal and international environmental concerns and policies beyond a focus solely on forested ecosystems. This shift is fundamental for a more comprehensive and rational approach to global biodiversity conservation.
* Inventory and protection: Identify and inventory the remaining native prairies and steppes, while assessing the degree of environmental degradation. Encourage the protection of representative areas in each ecoregion to ensure the conservation of as many different environment types as possible.
* Endemics conservation: Catalogue and conserve endemic species across entire regions, particularly the numerous plant and animal species unique to these ecosystems. Implement prairie and steppe management practices that mimic natural disturbance regimes to capitalize on the adaptive traits of endemic species.
* Threatened species evaluation: Evaluate the status of candidate threatened or endangered species and implement conservation measures to reverse declining population trends.
* Discouragement of woody forest species establishment: Hamper the establishment of woody plants and corridors within grassland-dominated ecoregions. Preventing the spread of forested stepping stones and corridors is vital to preserving genetic diversity in grassland environments.
* Administrative realignment: Consider realigning administrative and ecoregion borders, as proposed for the US Department of Interior National Biological Survey (Cohn, 1993), to implement cross-border, transnational, and supranational conservation actions. This realignment aims to enhance efficiency in inventory and planning, fostering a common vision for prairie and steppe conservation.
In the face of these adversities, the preservation of steppes and prairies hinges on collective commitment. Sustainable practices, conservation measures, and responsible stewardship are imperative to ensure the resilience and vitality of these ecosystems for generations to come. As we navigate the intricate dance of nature evolution and human impact, our shared responsibility is clear: safeguarding these landscapes is paramount for the maintenance of a flourishing life on Earth.
